We are interested in moving to Ambergris Caye but would need to bring our 83 year old mother. Are there nurses or assistants that can work at your home? We would be a few miles north of the bridge.

Yes. It is a bit difficult for the elderly to get around if they need a wheel chair and you want to check out accessibility. Some condos are easier than others. Medical care between San Pedro and Belize City is excellent in many arenas, not so great in others.
I would check out the poly clinic for nursing care and run an ad for regular, companionship care, and then interview carefully and check out references.

Thank you for your response. She actually uses a walker but spends most of the day in her favorite chair. We do need care for her basic needs morning and evening and someone to be with her when we are out, so thank you for the contact information.

Do you know what we should expect to pay for private care for our mother?

You may want to check with MyCieloBlue, a service that provides in-home care in the Belize City area. They may be able to help you locate a qualified professional in San Pedro. You can find these fine people online. Rosinelle Craig is the founder and moving force behind this program. She's a dynamo.

We moved to Belize with my 82 year old mom using a walker as well. We ended up hiring a local Belizean woman to do live in care for my mom. It was the best move we ever did. She took care of my mom just as it was her own mother and was a real blessing to us all as it gave us some freedom to travel as well. We paid her 250 US per month and all her meals and she thought we were giving her the world. We could never have afforded care for mom like that in the US and it was her desire to never go to a retirement home. Local doctors and clinics came right to the house to care for mom and gave her great care. We live in PG but I believe this is accessible anywhere in Belize except the far villages.
