We're researching all sorts of places to live and one that we're really starting to look into seriously is Belize. We're told Ambergris Caye is a popular area and were wondering what reasonable low budget would be and where to possibly find long term rentals.

For some perspective, we're a couple with an extremely low budget even in California. We have very little bills other than rent, student loans, and utilities. We've managed to live on less than $1000 a month in Cali (though could probably afford more) without any huge problem. We're fine with small places, don't really need much other than internet access (I work from home), and just need somewhere nice and peaceful.

Sorry if these are painfully annoying questions that gets asked all the time.

IMHO your budget won't work on Ambergris Caye.
Best to look into Cayo, Corozal or Punta Gorda.
All three locations have peaceful surroundings and available internet services.

You can live in relative comfort on Ambergris Caye for about $2000US per month if you're lucky enough to find cheap accommodations. $2500 to $3000 is more likely.

I am amazed when people say they are considering moving someplace they have never been. For many years I attended an annual conference in a different city then for another ten went to many countries outside of the USA. I was always "considering" what it would be live to move there; jobs, housing costs, culture, etc.

I have to wonder about posts such as these - are you just day dreaming?

Oh, I did leave Portland for San Francisco when I was 20 then San Francisco for Detroit (stupid what?)the next year - but back then I just had to get out of town. LOL
