Does anyone here, that has a pool near the beach, tarp their pool. Sand seems to be a constant problem and I am looking for a better solution than having to vacuum the bottom of the pool daily. We do have some shrubbery between the pool and the beach but with a constant wind this does not seem to help much.

This is a problem for all beach-side pools, but even moreso for ones like yours that are at ground-grade.
You might want to try planting grass on the sand around the pool, or building a block wall across the front area where the shrubbery now is?
Even with elevated pools you will find that during march winds they are fouled with sand. It's really tough on pumps and filters. When the wind-sand events occur some folks turn off their pumps altogether, toss a bunch of extra chlorine in the pool, and shut down the pool for a few days until the winds die down and then do a carefully supervised clean-up.

Speaking from experience, a couple things you can do.

Plant a row of lilies in front of the pool... they grow like weeds, stand up well to the salt breeze and will trap a lot of the sand in front of the pool.

If you have the water to spare, on really windy mornings hose down the sand in front of the pool

If it's a constant battle in Feb/March, but you don't want to permanently obstruct the view the rest of the year, build a removable wind block: Bury a series of 4" pvc pipes in the ground and cap them just under the level of the sand. Have Kate @ Sew What fashion a wind screen out of Sunbrella with sleeves/pockets say every 12 feet that will hold the appropriate size pvc pipe. On super windy days, uncap the pipes in the ground, unroll and slip in the screen. We have a number of these on our property and they've held up well.

Last, make sure you have a sand, not paper pool filter. Nothing more annoying than having the sand filter rip/tear because you have to rinse it out every 5 minutes while vacuuming 100lbs of sand out of your pool. Well worth the $ for the switch if you don't already have a sand one.

Fill it in. Save yourself thousands and go use Diane or Jeff's pool!!!!!!

Thanks for all the good advice. A few questions. How high of a temporary barrier are you using. I assume that the lilies do not grow in sand. Will I need some top soil to plant them in. are lilies something I can get in bulbs in San Pedro?

The common spider lilies grow in the sand. In fact they grow without soil at all. If you dig them up & put them in a pile in the shade they'll flower for ages with nothing covering their roots. I think you have them already on your property. They are more prolific than just about any plant on the island.

What Diane said... good luck trying to kill lilies, bet you can't. That's why they're perfect for the job. Incredibly prolific... we have 'em everywhere. If you do no have them on your property, PM me and you can come get a cart full. That said, our "wind barrier" is maybe 4-5' high. We have an exceptionally long "run" of sand in front of our pool. This just helps break that. Works well. I'd try the simplest solution first (plants) then go from there.

I guess the good news is that I already have some "post" that I could use to rig up some barriers. It is just not anything I would want use all of the time.
