Wake up early birds!!!!! This morning (Sat. the 22nd) we meet at Central Park to do some urban/island bird watching! This weekend is San Pedro on Saturday, and Caye Caulker on Sunday. This Morning is GORGEOUS: Perfect for Urban Bird Watching in San Pedro With Belize’s Audubon Society
For the past few years, they have set out to show that bird watching is not just for completely untouched habitats like our Belizean savannas or jungle. As most of us know who live here in San Pedro, particularly in the winter months, our caye is packed with beautiful birds. From the tiniest hummingbirds to majestic egrets and herons to raptors like the osprey to rock doves – aka dirty park pigeons. This morning was San Pedro’s scheduled event with Roni Martinez as guide. Roni is a bit of a hero to many…he is not only part of the Audubon Society but he is the Director of the Scarlet Six Biomonitoring Team protecting one of Belize’s most gorgeous animals. The scarlet macaw. I have been wanting to meet Roni for some time and this urban bird watch was not only a great way to link up with him but…OH WHAT A GLORIOUS MORNING. As of 2 hours into the 3 hour tour, we had spotted 22 birds. I spent much of my time mooning over the gorgeous scenery. Here is some of what I saw…

Belize Audubon Hosts Urban Bird Watch in San Pedro

At the crack of dawn on Saturday November 22nd, a handful of bleary-eyed bird enthusiasts gathered at Central Park in the heart of San Pedro Town to take part in the annual Belize Audubon Society (BAS) Urban Bird Watch. The group of six adults and two young men were led by well-respected Belizean birders and conservationists from the mainland, Roni Martinez of the Scarlet Six Biomonitoring Team and Jonathan Urbina of the Peregrine Fund Organization.

Starting at 6AM the group first took the time to admire the gorgeous sunrise and the soaring Magnificent Frigatebirds and Laughing Gulls who welcomed the new day. Armed with binoculars and cameras, the gaggle of gawkers started on the beach where they headed north towards the Boca del Rio Park.
