We are staying 3 nights in Mahahaul and then ten nights in Ambergris caye, is there a water taxi and do we need to check in at immigration office?

Water Taxi to San Pedro leaves from Chetumal. Take land-taxi from Mahahaul to Chetumal. Immigration is at the dock in Chetumal and at the dock in San Pedro when you arrive on Ambergris Caye.

You might locally find someone to take you if you are prepared to charter a boat, but it's not a scheduled route.

or very comfortable depending on the weather as you have to go outside the reef. And yes, you have to check in with Immigration, Customs and BAHA.

Hummm OK Bean Hunter, This is a good contact for a local boat guide that will take you direct to San Pedro, trusted, tried and true. [email protected] He's just down the beach from you in Xcalak. His name is Gallo (that means Rooster in Spanish). He's well connected on both sides of the border. The trip only takes an hour if you go by the front of the island . If the weather is bad you'll take the back route and that's about two hours.
