Rainy Weather Forecasted for Remainder of the Week

The rains have been pounding the country for days and it is expected that in the next few days, the downpour will persist. The weather report will have more details later in the newscast, but the Met Service told News Five today that with the sustained rains, residents in the south and north of the country will be experiencing flooding.

Frank Tench, Forecaster, National Meteorological Service

Frank Tench

"The rains we've been having since last night and this morning have been caused by a surface trough that was located just along the coast of Belize. That surface trough is actually the remnants of Tropical Storm Hanna which moved across Nicaragua earlier in the week and the system emerged over the Gulf of Honduras yesterday, weakened further and became a surface trough along the coast of Belize and the Yucatan Peninsula. The rainfall started in the south of the country last night and worked their way along the course and are now persisting especially along northern coastal areas. Several factors have contributed to the sustained rainfall. One you had sufficient moisture persisting over the area and a persistent northeasterly flow at the low levels-both factors have combined to sustain the rainy weather we have been having since last night. The trough itself is still gonna maintain sufficient moisture over Belize and the region to continue to produce more rain and showers especially along northern coastal areas tonight and tomorrow. So quite likely we'll have another day of rainy weather for most of coastal Belize with a concentration in the north during the next twenty-four hours. With several areas having experience sustained rainfall over the last week or so and with the forecast for more rain, sustain rainfall does increase the risk for flooding. So those areas that have been experiencing this sustained rainfall over the last week or so, it would be wise for those people in these areas to be on guard for some flooding."

From Belmopan... 09:00 BZT

Rain showers over much of Belize last night. . . . .This wet area keeps bubbling up and down. . .It was wetter over Guatamala earlier this morning, which is also contributing to rain scattered in any part of Belize, but that cloud has dispersed, but still bubbling up and down over the Sea.. . .. . .There is a Tropical Storm in the Pacific, just off Mexico, Tropical Depression Twenty-one-E that is throwing cloud our way, but is moving to the NW, further away from Belize.

So I am expecting scattered showers at any time of the day around Belize, but perhaps less than yesterday. . . .There could be glimpses of sun later.

9pm

Looks like this present type of weather, Overcast, Rain, Sun, are likely to be with us for several days.
