I was reading Marty's news of the day thread when I came across this synopsis of an article:

World Heritage Centre Mission

The Belize Fisheries Department through the Ministry of Forestry, Fisheries and Sustainable Development hereby informs the general public that the World Heritage Centre (WHC) in collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is on a mission to Belize during the week of January 19-23, 2015. The objective of the mission is to provide technical assistance for the design of a Desired State of Conservation for the removal of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System from the List of World Heritage in Danger.

I'm not exactly sure what this all means but to my mind the reef is far from any state that would allow a relaxation of status...Anybody else have a clue whats actually going on? Timed so closely to the petroleum document publishing one wonders...but probably not for long...

This has been happening for some time now, with Unesco concerned about GOB (both PUP and UDP) signing leases for drilling offshore, in the atolls and on the reef as well as uncontrolled development in the Pelican Cayes, near South Water Caye Marine Reserve. Then GOB's decision to allow Norwegian Cruise ships to carve and dredge a caye in a sensitive sensitive marine environment off Placencia and off course, the development at Puerto Azul in Lighthouse Reef atoll. You might remember the pixs of your Minister and PM's wife at post Oscar party in Cannes as 'guests' of the developers BEFORE this was even proposed to GOB. So no, Belize does not deserve Unesco heritage status now or in the future, as this govt and probably the next PUP govt will sell it off in scam after scam after scam. So enjoy it now while it lasts cause it ain't gonna survive greed and ignorance
