The five and a half mile stretch between Frank’s Eddy Village and Nohoch Che’en, known as the Jaguar Paw Road, is among the most trafficked roadways for the busing of tourists to and from the archaeological site. Despite its heavy use, the road has remained in a state of disrepair for years, undoubtedly an eyesore for visitors traversing the area. Earlier today, the Ministry of Works and Transport signed a contract with Belize Roadway Construction Limited for the paving of the thoroughfare. Signing on behalf of the Government of Belize was Minister Rene Montero and C.E.O. Errol Gentle, while BRC was represented by Tim Banman and Daniel Cano. We note that Cano is the former executive director of the Social Investment Fund. He came under fire a little over a year ago when it was revealed that there were financial irregularities during the reconstruction of the Dangriga marketplace and he was asked to tender his resignation. But he has now surfaced with the four point eight million dollars project to repair the Jaguar Paw Road. The project is scheduled to be completed within six months.

The Difference A Pave Will Make

The woeful condition of Frank's Eddy Road, which leads to the Nohoch Che'en archaeological reserve, has caused great inconvenience and discontent among tour operators over the years. This site is one of the leading destinations for tourists but the conditions of the route to get there …are deplorable. FECTAB along with other organizations have been pressuring the government to upgrade the road and finally a contract was signed to do so yesterday. President of FECTAB Tom Greenwood came to our studios this evening to discuss the positive impact this road project will have on the tourism sector.

Tom Greenwood, President - FECTAB
"We went the first time to the Prime Minister and he helped by getting the road scratched over nicely, lasted for some time, but the it went really bad and it got the point where as you know people have been kicking up a fuss and we certainly contributed to get this thing fix. Now that I know the contract has been signed for 4.8 million for 6 months of heavy work on it, we are absolutely relieve, because my goodness, some of the members of the federation operate many busses and vans and they've been paying a terrible price. Getting the road fix now doesn't fix the financial hole that they went into. It's just one of those life's things. I think tourism being the highest foreign exchange earner for Belize, it means basically that we must do our all for tourism and I see that beginning to happen. Here in Belize, we have a style of making things begin to happen, all of a sudden it drops in water - we have to stop that. We must continue gaining momentum when we start doing things."

The paving of about 5 miles of the Frank's Eddy Road or Jaguar Paw Road will be done at a cost of over 4 million dollars. The project should be completed in 6 months.

Hotmixing of Jaguar Paw road commences

[Linked Image] In February of this year the Government of Belize signed on to a contract for the paving of 9 kilometers of highway in Frank’s Eddy Village that leads to the Jaguar Paw cave system.

Since the signing road works by Belize Roadway construction Ltd. have been moving expeditiously and already hotmix is being placed on

With the investment of $4,864,644.92 on the road, it means that residents of the area as well as tour guides will see significant benefits. Already there are reports that a trip that would have taken 1/2 hour to make is being made in 15 minutes. Tour operators in particular are very pleased at the development as not only time is being cut in half but the wear and tear that their vehicles used to suffer is also being minimized.

Additionally, the paving of the road with hot mix will open the area to new investment.

As it is the project will rehabilitate the base course to remove undesirable soft material; there will be placing of culverts and crossings into properties adjacent to the road as well as drainage alongside the road. There will also be the establishment of drains to evacuate water from alongside the roadway throughout the length of road. The placing of road furniture throughout the length of roadway will include signs, guardrails, and other upgrades. The road will also be painted to define the carriageway. Speed bumps will also be installed for traffic control and the carriageway will also be widened.

The work being carried out is expected to be concluded by the middle of this year.
