Council staff are to receive leased property from a 50-acre parcel off Mile 14 on the George Price Highway in the community of Hattieville, granted by the Government to the Council last year.

Mayor Darrell Bradley explained to reporters today that the Council continues work on surveying and apportioning lots of 100 by 90 feet for staff members who have been working for a minimum of two years as a reward for their years of service, as well as marking out space for road reserve, streets and access as well as establishing utilities and transportation to and from the area.

Initially 180 of the council's complement of staff - less senior managers and Councilors - were to benefit from the grant, but it may become less because of the swelling of the Council's ranks due to the BML workers acquisition.

The Council will institute a lottery to ensure the proper selection of beneficiaries.

But the Council is determined to go through with the project once issues such as markings for road reserve and access are settled and the property is developed.

The Council has previously offered bonuses to workers and worked with other municipalities to develop regulations concerning workers's service.

Mayor Seeks to Distribute Land to Belize City Council Staff

The Belize City Council has an Employee Land Program which it had initiated last year with the coordination of the Ministry of Natural Resources. Fifty acres of land along mile 14 on the George Price Highway has been earmarked for distribution to the council's employees who have been here for more than two years. Mayor Darrell Bradley explained.

"We want to give people a suitable parcel of land. We were looking at 10090 parcels. We are seeing how many parcels we could get out of the 50 acres but one of the things for example I will give you one of the specific challenges that has arisen, the surveyor who is working with us indicated to us that there is part of the area that you have to leave for road reserve, there is part of it that you have to leave for public access, there is part of it that you have to leave for parks and different things like that and then there is part of the land because we have already done a walkthrough of the parcel which is land not suitable for housing development so that that determines how many parcels you can get out of the amount and then that determines how many years you are working with. We want to give as much staff members as possible so that they can benefit from this but if because certain amounts of the property has to be chunked out for road access, certain amounts of it has to be chunked out for parks and things like that then what that would mean is that the years would be lessened so we would be working with one to two years because there is only certain amount of land that you can get out of that area. It is not specifically 50 but it is around 50 acres."

"Are councilors and yourself included?"

"Nope, this is strictly staff. Staff is defined as somebody who is employed with the City Council and they would have received a letter of appointment. So it doesn't include any person who was elected and we actually were considering not including senior management. It is primarily meant to benefit people who do not have a property. If you are somebody who is a senior manager your salary is much higher than the regular staff you can perhaps buy property from the private market but we left that decision up to the committee and the committee included every person who is staffed."

About 180 employees will received a parcel of land and Bradley says that the parcels of land will be distributed by way of a lottery.
