Human activity that results in too little of something can be as bad as that which results in too much...Here is a good synoptic article of research findings regarding the aspects of deforestation that Simon raised

Deforestation & the Maya

Water vapor is considered to be a "green house gas" which is a term carrying rather negative connotations implying excess. From another perspective the significant reduction of those "emissions" appears to have contributed to the conditions that led to the collapse of the Central Lowland Maya.

So the main English Cay Channel is actually an old river bed and land used to extend to the reef? Interesting. Presumed it was a natural channel in the sea formed by sea erosion of weaker rock/fissures.

I'd be inclined to think that at some point geologically land extended out, or perhaps better to to say that there was land a considerable distance from its current shoreline. Given the presence of stalactites in recesses at certain depths of the Blue Hole those levels would have had to have been above sea level for a considerable period of time...

the sea about two hundred feet lower than now is what folks speculate but the land could also have sunk instead of the sea rising so much. Who really knows.

Estimates by Rice University researchers put the global sea level drop during the last glaciation(approximately 10-15,000 years ago) at 121m below current sea level. General estimates by the geological community place the drop at closer to 200 m. Global sea level has been rising for the last 10,000 years as the ice caps melt (and continues to do so). On top of this liquid water volume change, the ground is either locally subsiding or locally uplifting due to compaction or tectonic events.

Elbert, I like the way you cover both aspects sea rise/land drop, its kind of how you explained bird migration to me one time...

Excellant. Better explanation then an undersea cave from the mainland that collapsed.
I see the old river bed now.
