FISHING REPORT

February 1st - February 7th, 2015

Weather Conditions: The weather was a little mixed with a few days of showers, a few days of sun and a few days of wind, generally cool for this time of year.

Winds: The winds started from the north and gradually switched back to the normal east winds but reverted to north at the end of the week. The wind was moderate most days in the 1 mph range with 2 days of gusty winds hitting 15 with an occasional gust to 20 late in the week.

Air Temperature: High 70's, low 80's for the High. low 70's, for the lows.

Water Temperature: 78 F.

Moonphase: The full moon is on February 3rd

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Everyone caught bonefish with a couple up close to 5 pounds. Many of the guests were first timers to flats fishing so it made their trips, Marty (she was an excellent casting student), her husband Rico, and Brent alternated fishing with Capt. Kechu and had a blast earning their bonefish pins. Our old friend Kim was hunting tarpon most days but landed some bonefish to get the skunk off. Maine resident Kevin had some luck with bonefish on his expeditions to the lagoon using a canoe to get to the wading that is available out behind the lodge. Jimmy and Penney from New Mexico teamed up with Capt. Hilberto for some fishing variety but both got their bonefish in the first day out. Pat and Mike had great fun fly and spin fishing with Capt. Junior, father and sons Paul and Brad, Bill and Chris, Hal and Kevin were back on the water together, just enjoying each other's company in between the takes, the runs and the good casts, the bad casts and memories of fishing together years ago. John "Lefty", and his buddy Phil did some damage in the bonefish department despite the bad shoulder injury that John suffered just before the trip. With a little practice he learned to pin the elbow at his side using his body a bit more to the line speed he needed.

PERMIT (Palometta): Our hero of the week was Steve from Colorado, returning for his second trip. He had a 4 permit week with one gorgeous 20 pound permit with 2 smaller ones midweek and his grand slam fish late in the week. The next story is very unusual as Chris managed to land a permit on his first ever flats experience with Captain Tomas.

TARPON (Sabalo): Paul got a beautiful 50-Pound fish fishing with Captain Cesar out on the far edges of Savanah flats near the mainland. Steve got an early morning 15-pounder with Captain Emir on his fort step towards his slam day. Capt. Junior and his angler Mike landed a beautiful 50 pounder out on Savannah late in the week when the winds tapered off. What a last cast that Bill made with the urging of Capt. Tomas... a beautiful big fish came next to the boat before the hook broke near the barb!!

OTHER SPECIES: Kurt was able to get a huge red snapper on his day out reef fishing with his brother Dick. Barracudas, snappers & jacks were also fair game along with some trigger fish, and the occasional shad.

Grand Slam: Steve teamed up with Captain Emir and Gordy for the only slam of the week. It was Steve's last day and after landing 3 permit earlier in his trip he and his guide decided to get up early and get it done. It paid of big time. Leaving the dock at 5:30 they ventured through the dark arriving at a calm channel hoping to see some rolling tarpon. Sure enough a few fish did roll but still no bites.. Towards 6:30 or so a fished roll and Steve deliver a quick cast 15 feet in front of the roll, the flash of the take was visible in the low light and the 15 pound tarpon came to hand a few minutes later. The solid 3 pound bonefish was a short 5 minute boat ride and was done by 7 am. Now off in search of the real problem - permit. They ventured back to a lagoon that held a nice school early in the week. Gordy and Steve waded this muddy flat trying to find them again. 300 yards across the lagoon, then back again, slogging through mud up to their knees at times, determined to find them. Sure enough Steve spotted a fish out of the corner of his eye and threw a single shot and it was game on, with the slam in hand by 8:30. How often does a plan like this come together? Once or twice in a fisherman's lifetime. Congratulations to the Guide team of Emir and his son Gordy for getting Steve to the right spots at the right time.

It was a pretty quiet week here at the lodge with only a couple boats going out each day. Congratulations to Marty our most improved caster this week, she came out to the casting clinic 3 days in a row, determined to cast well enough to get her bonefish pin. Sure enough first day she got it!

FISHING REPORT

February 7th - February 13th, 2015

Weather Conditions: The weather was cool and mostly sunny.

Winds: Winds from the northwest ranging to Northeast. The north winds tend to draw all the water out of the area so tides were low. Our astronomical tides are so small that the wind directions and speed often override the tides.

Air Temperature: High 70's, low 80's for the High. low 70's, for the lows.

Water Temperature: 78 F.

Moonphase: The last quarter moon is on February 11th.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): First bonefish ever kudos go to husband/wife teams: Marilyn and Gordon, Jeff and Beth, Pat and Sibyl, Mike and Dana. Returning guests Nick, Carl, Mike, and Bill all had their way with the bonefish surrounding Ambergris. Todd and friend Steve arrived late in the week and were greeted by some friendly bonefish on their first day out. Sharon was visiting from NYC for a few days to learn this saltwater fly-fishing and started on a tough day with North winds that seemed to give our bonefish a bit of lockjaw. Captain Erlindo and Sharon had a school of a thousand fish that just wouldn't bite despite changing flies, lengthening leaders and the like. Some 6-7 pound bonefish were caught while reef fishing!!! There are some big ones on the ocean side.

PERMIT (Palometta): John landed a nice permit on his time out with captain Emir using a spin rod and live crab. (Permit love live crab!) Rob had a heartbreaking day as he was able to hook up 2 nice permit only to lose them part way through the battle... the hook just came out! His Captain (Emir) was more disappointed than Rob! Rob didn't let that deter him and went on to land a permit on his last day with Captain Emir. Bill got his first permit with Captain Tomas up at Bacalar Chico National Park. Dan came all the way from Canada to get his first permit with Captain Emir. TARPON (Sabalo): Our new dynamic duo guide team of Gordy and Kristian jumped 2 nice fish with their anglers Steve and Brad. Rob Jumped an 80 pounder (unusual for this time of year) but his guide, Emir, won't tell me where it was! Marilyn got her first tarpon on a fly rod early in the week! Veteran guide Capt. Vince coached Marilyn through the fight to the end. John landed a real nice fish just north of Savannah in Cesar's secret spot. It looks to be about 60 pounds! Mike was able to jump a tarpon on his last day out with Captain Hilberto, but it shook loose on the first magnificent jump. He is now "hooked" on tarpon!

Grand Slam: Hurray for Rob!! Returning for his 5th visit to El Pescador with his family Kyra and little Tegan, Rob pulled out the stops on the last day landing a tarpon in the early light and finishing with a permit and bone later in the day. Captain Emir was determined to get his friend on the grand slam leaderboard at the Grand Slam Bar.

FISHING REPORT

February 15th - February 21st, 2015

Weather Conditions: The weather was cool and mostly sunny early on with winds from the northwest ranging to Northeast. The north winds tend to draw all the water out of the area so tides were low. Our astronomical tides are so small that the wind directions and speed often override the tides. The winds finally turned to the east late in the week for some better conditions

Air Temperature: High 70's for the High. low 70's, for the lows.

Water Temperature: 78 F.

Moonphase: The new moon is on February 18th.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Orvis' big bonefish trip included 24 guests from all over the US. Many thanks to Sharon, Susan, John, Dan, Kerry, Bill, Ron Joanne, Brian, Pat, Kasey, Mike, Brian, Harry, Spence, Mike II, Victor Austin, Joe, Miles, Tommy, Jim, Joyce, James, Hollis, Leslie, Tana, Michael, Brian and Holly for sharing their vacation with us and for the many stories of the hundreds of bonefish caught this week. Victor and Austin had a 40 bonefish day on their boat!! Many of theses guests were first timers to the salt and our bonefish (although a little shy in the north wind) came through for all.

PERMIT (Palometta): Our permit master this week is Dan from Ontario Canada. Brian from the UK and Captain Kechu teamed up to land a permit on their first day out in the windy weather.

TARPON (Sabalo): Or tarpon Master this week is Dan from Canada who teamed up with Captain Emir for a tarpon, Joe jumped one, Tommy landed one thanks to the guiding of Capt. Vince. 2 tarpon were landed with Capitano Junior with a day trip for Don. Martin hooked up 6 one day but all came loose shortly after hookup. Lots of near misses with numerous other tarpon jumped all in the 10-30 pound range. Captain Cesar guided Mike to a beautiful fish on his last hour of his last day - way to go Mike!

Grand Slam: Although he did not slam, our friend from the north landed a permit and tarpon on his last day with Captain Emir, but they could not land a bonefish! We all had Dan out on the dock that evening equipped with shrimp and a spinning rod hoping to break the bonefish curse and award the slam, but nothing doing. I have never seen this happen before, but Dan in his good spirits every day shrugged it off with ease... "I did the hard part."

This Week's Summary:

Half way through the week the wind kicked up and put a damper on the fishing as boats had to hide in the sheltered areas on the south end of the island. Despite the wind some anglers did well, but others found even the bonefish tough to hookup mid week. Later in the week fish started to get back to normal as the wind switched back to the easy.

FISHING REPORT

February 21st - February 27th, 2015

Weather Conditions: Generally fair weather all week - mostly sunny, with winds from the east at 8-15 mph all week with some calmer mornings. Just a couple of quick squalls. Just a note for those of you looking at weather forecasts before you visit El Pescador, do not give much weight to the percentage of rain in the forecast, a 50% chance of rain usually means there is a 50% chance you will hit a shower but it does not mean it is a rainy day! In the summer you will see a forecast of Thunder storms daily - this is a usually a great forecast ! You will see a storm over the mainland but rarely is it over the island.

Air Temperature: High 70's to 80 for the High. low 70's, for the lows.

Water Temperature: 78 F.

Moonphase: The first quarter moon is on February 25th

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): The bonefish were super cooperative this week and everyone got their fill of these silver bullets. A couple of 20-40 fish days for some guests who were new to the flats.

PERMIT (Palometta): No permit this week! Our guests were not chasing them and seemed to prefer to catch numbers of bones more than a chance at the finicky permit.

TARPON (Sabalo): Chris was the big winner for tarpon hooking up 6 tarpon in a single day, several of those fish were leadered and counted as landed fish, but alas no pictures. We count "leadered" fish (touching the leader, or the leader in the rod tip) as a way to promote the best catch and release practices. We want our anglers to be aggressive when playing these fish so they can be released without any danger of lactic acid building in the muscles. This means many fish are lost right at the boat as the guide is trying to get the fish under control as early as possible. It is standard practice in all catch and release tarpon tournaments. Chris's guide was Capt. Junior. Two days later Chris went back to the same spot and landed 3 tarpon and jumped a couple more. I need to find this spot!! Steve B. had a nice fish along side the boat thanks to the guiding of Captain Cesar late in the week and landed it in about 10 minutes - Steve was able to get a picture of this one!

FISHING REPORT

March 1- March 7th

Weather Conditions: Generally fair weather all week - mostly sunny, with winds from the east at 8-15 mph all week with a couple windier days midweek - a rain shower each day towards the end of the week.

Air Temperature: High 70's to 80 for the High. low 70's, for the lows.

Water Temperature: 78 F.

Moonphase: The full moon was on March 5th

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): George and Jean returning for their 3rd visit and rounded up some bonefish while mixing it up for tarpon and permit with their favorite guide, Kechu. Capt. Erlindo rounded up more than 20 fish on his day out with Wayne and Judi. Our returning friend Neil landed about 30-40 bonefish today... Holy Cow! John, Don Rick, Lon, Paula, Bob, Robert, Lon, Janice, Joe, Brian, John and Melissa, AND MANY OTHERS all got the bonefish bug satisfied on their daily trips out with the guides. You have to love this fishery when first time saltwater anglers can just about be guaranteed bonefish action.

PERMIT (Palometta): Andy and Jesse hunted some permit hard and came up with the shots, delivered the cast, got some follows, hard looks, soft looks, out and out rejections, spooked a few, but didn't get hooked up. Captain Emir was working hard to get them hooked up but couldn't work his permit magic this time. Neil got into 2 juvenile permit today - Yippee for Neil and his guide Raton.. Update for Neil - 9... yes 9 small permit on the fly on Thursday (the windiest day) His guide, Raton, was quite proud of his 76 year young angler! Steve landed a pretty Permit thanks to some very hard work on Capt. Kechu's part. They waded and waded (sometimes up to their necks, chasing this school. After Kechu went back to get the boat they had just about given up when they found them again and the 12th cast, and the 12th fly was the charm! Another great example of stellar guiding and angler perseverance.

TARPON (Sabalo): Junior was back to his spots and had more tarpon hookups with returning guest Rob who stopped by for a few days while visiting his son who is on the island. Philip is learning how to resist a trout set on tarpon, the excitement of the take and the 20 years of trout fishing is keeping Philip from realizing his full potential! Captain Vince is sure he will get one tomorrow! Sure enough Philip and Vice got it done the next day! The hard work paid off! Andy and Captain Cesar teamed up for a tarpon on his 3-day outing. Lon and Janice each got a tarpon to the boat while fishing with Captain Junior up near Bacalar Chico National Park. Benji got a beauty on hos last day and 16 year olds Calyton and JT got tarpon on ifirst days! The guides call setting the hook by raising the rod a "trout set". We are always looking for a strip set here on the flats with every species. The strip set is just that, the rod remains pointed at the fish with the tip in the water and as you strip and feel the bite you simply strip a little firmer and longer to get a good hook set (tarpon however require a more violent strip set). A strip set will deliver a little more power than a trout set but the big advantage is that if the fish misses the fly, a strip set puts that fly 12-18 inches in front of the fish and many fish (especially bonefish) will eat it as soon as you start stripping again. Keeping the fly in play like this is critical for success

FISHING REPORT

March 15 - March 21

Weather Conditions: Mostly fair weather all week with moderate winds out of the east from 4-20 mph, a few days the winds started out of the north but quickly switched back to East ( Our favorite wind condition)

Air Temperature: Low to mid 80's for the high. low to mid 70's for the lows.

Water Temperature: 80 F.

Moonphase: The new moon is on Friday, March 20th

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Another huge bonefish week with everyone getting in on the action - of special note were Bruce and Robert landing over 75 bonefish while out on the flats on the west side of the island. Anyone else who asked for bonefish, got bonefish! Congratulations to all those who earned the coveted "El Pescador First Bonefish" pin award. As we discuss in our new guest fishing orientation, you can sometimes find schools of bonefish that can number in the thousands. Often these fish are 6 or 7 feet deep, feeding with abandon. If you and your guide are lucky enough to find such a school it can be a very productive day with 20 or more bonefish not uncommon. That said, some anglers prefer to hunt for bones in shallow water, which we refer to as sight fishing. Fish found in the shallows are much more spooky, and more skill is needed to cast quickly and to the right spot at the right time, with the boat rocking, the wind blowing etc. This kind of stalking and hunting is where the real addiction to bonefishing starts. It does cut down on the numbers of bonefish with about 7 fish being a solid day of sight fishing.

PERMIT (Palometta): Permit are biting! What is happening? Has the world turned upside down? Congrats to Anita and Bill for landing a permit on one of their 2 days out on the water. They traveled to Bacalor Chico National Park on the north end of the island. Gregg and Sean had the upper hand on 4 permit in just a few days, John and Peter teamed up for their first permit. Thomas did the same, Riley and Andrew had 5 permit in 3 days, and John had a permit, Dave too� Wow! Over a dozen permit this week!

TARPON (Sabalo): Returning guest Jim had a nice tarpon as the final word on the last day of his latest trip to EP. Robert and John were able to get 3 tarpon to the boat, Brian and Benjamin got into some great tarpon action, Gregg got a good fish to the boat ( but he and his boat mate John lost 3 permit) , Matt and Mike crushed tarpon and everything else that swims!

Grand Slam: Not this week.

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONEFISH - You name it and it worked! Christmas Island Specials (lead eyes)in size 6 pink seems to be the favorite.

FOR PERMIT - Raghead Crab tan, Christmas Island special, Mantis shrimp tan, Mantis shrimp orange/tan.

FOR TARPON - Tan bunny, Green toad, White Deceiver

Guide of the week: Captain Raton for a huge (9 fish) permit day and huge (30 fish) bonefish day for returning guest Neil.

This Week's Summary:

Thanks to our friends at Orvis for hosting another successful bonefish bonanza trip here at the lodge; as usual, the Orvis host was a big help. Orvis offers a nice rod incentive on these trips� check it out! Lots and lots of bonefish were caught. The great weather produced everything it should with multiple permit days and multiple tarpon days - only thing missing was a Grand Slam.

FISHING REPORT

March 22 - March 28, 2015

Weather Conditions: Generally fair weather with a few quick showers with winds 5-12 mph out of the east most of the week. Mid week was the calmest with 4-8 mph winds. Barometric pressure ranging fro 29.50 -30.10 all week

Air Temperature: mid 80's for the high. low to mid 70's for the lows.

Water Temperature: 80 F.

Moonphase: The new moon is on Friday, March 20th

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Jack, Jeff, Elizabeth, Charlie, William Travis, Munroe, Alec, Sled Bruce, Jim ,David and everyoone else that fished all had their fill of bonefish - the silver ghost of the flats. We have more bonefish per square mile here than anywhere else in the world! Seeing bonefish is both an art and just plain practice. A good pair of polarized amber colored sunglasses helps most people key in to the different looks a bonefish has. On a nice white sandy bottom a fish that is coming right towards you is pretty visible to most anglers. The top of their back is slightly darker as you look down along the length of their body. Once that same fish turns sideways to you it disappears! The sides of a bonefish are mirrors that reflect the bottom creating the perfect camouflage.

PERMIT (Palometta): Charlie was fishing with his buddy Casey and they both landed permit early in the week. Casey's went on to be part of his grand slam while Charlie's was just plain huge - 25 pounds huge! That is a big permit. Bo landed 2 permit in one day this week and Munroe succeeded with one permit to the boat thanks to the continued fair weather and east winds.

TARPON (Sabalo): William and Elizabeth landed a tarpon on William's birthday ~ what a way to celebrate! Casey's tarpon was enough to assure the grand slam for his day early in the week. Travis from our friends Sage/Rio landed his first tarpon ever. Bruce Jim and David had lots of shots but were snubbed by some stubborn fish while Alec and Sled, Mike and Jessie turned a couple bites into landed fish during their first trip to El Pescador.

OTHER SPECIES: Jack and Jeff found some snook (10 in one day), Jacks, Barracuda

Grand Slam: Casey added another Grand Slam to the Grand Slam Bar's award wall!

FISHING REPORT

March 29, 2015 - April 4, 2015

Weather Conditions: Pretty good weather again this week, a little cool and showers here and there to start the week as a weak cold front came through. This causes the winds to fluctuate out of the north. The rest of the week was mquite sunny and relatively moderate winds out of the east at 5-12 mph

Air Temperature: mid 80's for the high. low to mid 70's for the lows.

Water Temperature: 80 F.

Moonphase: The full moon is on April 4th

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): The usual cooperative bonefish were in hand for this and (seemingly) every week. Steve and Lynn had great success with bonefish; John got all 3 species this week starting with some beautiful Macabi. Andrea, Rick, Peter, Bill, Dan, Dennis and reed and lots more all had their fill of our happy bonefish. Norm and Norman learned to double haul and catch loads of bonefish on their first journey to the flats as they took advantage of the daily casting lessons. This takes some dedication as most anglers are very tired after 8 hours on the water and the lure of Mariano's Mojito is often greater than the desire of improving your casting technique. Tisk�Tisk!

PERMIT (Palometta): John got his permit! A lifetime achievement! Dan followed suit with a nice permit of his own! Folks had lots more shots but the permit seemed to be back to their old tricks, making you feel like you can catch them only to snub you in the rudest ways.

TARPON (Sabalo): Jenn and Hackney have come to visit us at least twice a year for many years and although they have caught all species all sizes, in all weather, tarpon were the jewel of this trip with several fish to the boat. Somehow Jenn believes she is not competitive, but let's just say she is determined! She gets the job done. John finished up his grand slam (over the week) with his biggest tarpon of his career (Are the migratory tarpon arriving early this year?) Rick and Peter had some success, Bob hooked up a bunch but was suffering from the odds - it is usually 1 tarpon landed for every 10 hooked syndrome) Andy Mill has a great scene in the film Chasing Silver when he was in a 0 out of 19 dry spell! Andy and his son will be at El Pescador this summer for the annual tarpon-tagging tournament. Kelly did not suffer from the odds and landed 3 tarpon!! Reed got tarpon on their first attempt and his buddy Denny lost one real close to the boat - what heartbreak!!

OTHER SPECIES: Jack and Jeff found some snook (10 in one day), Jacks, Barracuda

Grand Slam: John was the only guest who landed all three species this week - even though it is spread out over a few days it is still a big deal - Congratulations!!

FISHING REPORT

April 5, 2015 - April 11, 2015

Weather Conditions: Scattered Clouds most of the week offering off and on visibility. Winds were moderate out of the East all week.

Air Temperature: Mid 80s for the highs and upper 70's for the low.

Water Temperature: 80 F.

Barometric Pressure: 29.92 - 30.00

Moonphase: The last quarter moon is on April 11th

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Everyone who went out landed bonefish daily. The max number I heard was 25 in a day - we often get comments like "if I had known you had so many bonefish here I would come here first instead of the Bahamas!" or "I thought bonefishing was hard!" It is true that our bonefish are not world-record size, but there are more fish per square mile than anywhere I know. Congratulations to all our guests who got to experience great weather and lot of Caribbean bonefish this week. What is your favorite bonefish fly?

PERMIT (Palometta): Returning guest John V. finally landed a permit after 6 years of effort that included every permit story heard - finicky, refusal after refusal, hookups followed by break-offs� but finally the odds caught up with him. He did it this week. No one deserves it more. Way to go John! Camyrn (the new permit princess) caught 2 permit, and Dick as part of his slam landed a permit as well. Brett caught the permit while his wife Sue seemed to have more luck with tarpon, landing her first silver king. Boat mates Zack and Nick both got permit in the same day! Not to be left out there was Reagan and Curtis who ended up with 2 permit each this week, thanks to their permit Karma.

TARPON (Sabalo): Camryn's tarpon was part of her Grand Slam day, Richard's tarpon was also part of his Grand Slam day and Sue was a tarpon magnet!

OTHER SPECIES: Barracuda, Jacks, Ladyfish, snappers

Grand Slam: 2 Grand slams this week! Dick pulled of his hat trick early in the week and young Camryn got the job done as the youngest female angler at 15 to accomplish the feat. Her day ended up with 2 permit! Our youngest grand slammer ever is William at 13 - he was here just last month!! Husband and wife Brett and Sue landed all 3 species between them� over the week though!

Permit fishing was on fire this week (I don't often get to say "on fire" and "permit fishing" in the same sentence!) Tarpon seemed a little more difficult than normal, and the fair weather meant lots of bonefish. We are getting ready for the influx of big tarpon over the next few weeks.

FISHING REPORT

April 12, 2015 - April 18, 2015

Weather Conditions: Pretty good weather again in the beginning of the week but then the winds came, with 10-20 mph out of the east. No rain although each morning was a little cloudy, but it usually cleared by mid morning.

Air Temperature: Mid to high 80s for the highs and mid 70's for the low.

Water Temperature: 80 F.

Barometric Pressure: 29.22 - 30.00

Moonphase: The new moon is on April 18th

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Jim and Sparky lit up the bonefish board with a couple of good size fish coming in around 5 pounds. Lots of bonefish were found by Ted, Frank, Steve, Dennis, Rick, Thomas, Keegan, Nick, Zach, Philip, Penny, James and Kathleen, Bob, Dave, Larry, Janet, Michael and many more had turns with our ever so cooperative bonefish. There are few places on earth where one can warm up with plentiful bonefish, and then any day of any year head out to world-class permit and tarpon flats. Dennis and Bob proved it is possible for massive numbers of bonefish with 45 to the boat today! Of course they had paid the price earlier in the week with a couple of tough days, so they deserved it.

PERMIT (Palometta): Not only did Steve land his first permit ever, he did it 3 times. As everyone knows who reads these reports, catching 1 permit is hard enough. My good friend Lindsay landed a permit mostly because of her enthusiasm and hard work! She has visited El Pescador 6 times and was finally given the permit crown (and she wears it so well)! Timothy was able to get the permit box checked off on his bucket list! What chance do you have of catching a permit that is the same age as you? I know I am way past that dream, but if you are 7 years old it is possible! Young Jake became the youngest ever to add permit to his list of accomplishments - at 7 years old! I have a feeling his luck will continue to match his enthusiasm! Holy cow - did one boat land 17 permit in a single day? Can this be?? Did the permit overlords take the day off? I have it straight from the source that Rhonda and Suzanne landed 17 permit in one day by lunchtime. They had a hungry school of fish that could not resist their allure. Want to know the total for their trip? 22 permit in 5 days

TARPON (Sabalo): Tom was able to land his first tarpon of his fishing career during his short trip here to Ambergris Caye (Grand Slam capitol of the world). Ted's heart was broken when he lost the tarpon of his dreams, but he will be back for more to even the score. Norm managed to get a tarpon to cooperate on his last day. Steve added another tarpon to his trip, Rhonda got a 50-pound beauty to her hand, but Leah one upped her with a 60 pound tarpon that refused to give up.

OTHER SPECIES: a 20 pound Snook, Snapper, Cuda, Jacks to name a few of the thousands of species in our waters.

Grand Slam: I can only report soft grand slams this week, a term to describe anglers who managed to catch a bonefish permit and tarpon in the course of their visit to El Pescador. Rhonda accomplished hers in style, and Norm capped off a perfect week with his family and all three species.
