Oceana in Belize is calling on all supporters of protecting Belize's natural resources to join in on its upcoming "Hands Across the Sand" initiative.

The initiative, a symbolic joining of hands at 10 locations simultaneously, will be held on Saturday, May 16 at noon.

Amelita Knowles, national grassroots coordinator with Oceana, explained that the initiative is one of the ways the organization gives Belizeans a forum to demonstrate their feelings about the proper care and management of the country's resources.

"This is not about politics, its about our food, our jobs or protection our pride and joy," Knowles said. "Think about what,s we are going to lose if we allow offshore oil drilling to happen."

Venues for the event include: In front of the San Pedro high school; on the beach in Dangriga; near the Social Security Board, in the Corozal Bay; in Punta Gorda in front of Bella Suites; Independence Hill in Belmopan; the Central Park in Orange Walk, the Wooden Bridge in San Ignacio, The Split in Care Caulker; the Tipsy Tuna bar in Placencia; and Sandlighters Promenade in Belize City.

AND it must have started on time. This must have been a 1st.
By the time my golf cart got home for me to use it was 15 minutes after noon. By the time I got to the beach it was all over. So sorry I missed it. Also, I was told that no elected official was in attendene.

San Pedro Joins Hands Across the Sand in Support Against Offshore Oil Drilling

Hands Across the Sand / Land, founded in 2010, grew into an international movement after the BP oil disaster in April of that year. People came together to join hands, forming symbolic barriers against spilled oil and to stand against the impacts of other forms of extreme energy. The cause brings together like-minded individuals and organizations with the conviction to organize a Global movement to promote a clean energy future for our earth and end our dependence on dirty fuel sources.

Participants in Belize sent a clear message to government that they do not agree with offshore oil drilling, as it will jeopardize one of the country's most important natural resources and industries. Oceana Belize continues to be a strong advocate and a voice for the people of Belize to send this strong message against offshore oil drilling in the country.
