Another year honoring the Patron Saint of Fishermen: San Pedro
Over the past weekend, islanders ended the celebration of Patron Saint Peter in grand fashion, with both religious and festive activities. From special mass services at the San Pedro Roman Catholic Church to a karaoke competition and lots of live entertainment in between; activities were plentiful. Due to inclement weather condition, some of the previously scheduled events had to be canceled, but, nevertheless there was still lots of family fun. Among the activities canceled was the first ever Junior Karaoke Competition scheduled for Friday, June 26th to kick off the Dia de San Pedro weekend. Instead, celebrations officially opened on Saturday, June 27th at the Honorable Louis Sylvester Sporting Arena. Speaking at the opening ceremonies was Mayor Daniel Guerrero and Area Representative Honorable Manuel Heredia Jr. Both emphasized the importance of keeping culture and tradition alive, especially that of celebrating St. Peter (San Pedro). St. Peter is the patron saint of all fishermen and the island is still strongly rooted in the fishing industry.

Fun Island Activities to Celebrate Dia de San Pedro
Every year Dia de San Pedro celebrations (San Pedro Day) pays homage to the island’s patron saint San Pedro (St. Peter) and under the organization of the San Pedro Town Council, the San Pedro Culture Committee and the San Pedro Roman Catholic Church residents celebrate with activities centered around honoring fishermen and the development of the town that grew on the foundation of a small fishing village. June 29 marks Dia de San Pedro but islanders participated in activities prior to the date that included mass celebrations and novenas at the San Pedro Roman Catholic Church, cultural dance presentations at the Hon. Louis Sylvestre Sports Complex, Karaoke competitions, family time on the mechanical games at the fair grounds and a big fishing tournament/triathlon/ceviche cooking competition at the end of the weekend.

Sly Dog wins the Dia de San Pedro Fishing Rodeo!
Eight vessels participated in the annual Dia de San Pedro Fishing Rodeo held on Sunday, June 28th. From 6AM, island fishermen were out at sea, casting their lines in hopes of reeling in the big ones. By 4PM, a large crowd of spectators had gathered at the Boca del Rio Park to await the vessels coming in with their day’s catch. Qualifying fish in the tournament were required to be above a certain weight and of the listed species: snapper, jack, barracuda, Spanish mackerel, king fish, wahoo, dorado, tuna and grouper. All fish caught by those on vessel were jointly weighed to get one cumulative weight. The team with the highest weight would take home the grand prize of a Honda Motorcycle. Taking the first place prize of the Honda Storm Motorcycle with license and registration was team ‘Sly Dog’, captained by Robby Guerrero. Captain Guerrero and his crew managed to pull in an outstanding 179.9 pounds of fish. In second place was team ‘Fishing Unlimited’ with 170.75 pound and captained by Hilberto Lara. They walked away with $2,000. ‘Bill Collector’, captained by Alberto Bradley, took the third place prize of $1,000 with a cumulative weight of 164 pounds of fish. Individual cash prizes were also given for the largest tuna, largest snapper, largest dorado, largest barracuda, largest grouper and youngest angler on board a vessel.
