Sing A New Song

A week ago, we told you about the start of the National Song Competition, the event held by the National Celebrations Commission which marks the beginning of the September festivities. For the entire week, the judges have been touring the country to see music men and women perform their original songs. In the end, for this Friday night's finals, they've chosen 9 artists to compete against each other in the National Song Senior category, 7 artists to compete in Carnival Song Senior category, and duet of young siblings to compete against another junior in the National Song junior category.

In total, these musicians are competing for $32,000 in cash prizes, and so today, they were all gathered at the Bliss Institute for Performing Arts, as sort of a workshop and an opportunity to meet the press.

The session started off with the organizers explaining to the artists what to expect on the night of the finals, and how this week's rehearsal and preparation will work. First, they got a bit of advice from National Song veteran, Nello Player, who will sit this one out to be a judge. Here's how that conversation went:

After that opening ceremony, we got a chance to meet 13 of the 18 finalists, which included a few familiar and well-known faces, as well as a great number of new comers. Here's what they had to say about the impending competition:

To listen to samples of this year's song competition's entries, and to vote for your favorite song, you can visit the National Celebrations Commission's website,

The final competition starts takes place on this coming Friday at 8 p.m. It will be broadcast live right here on Channel 7.

Sing a New Song

On Friday night, the finals of the 2015 National Song competition was broadcasted on national television and right here on Channel 7. There were 2 songs performed in the Belize Song Junior category 9 in the Belize Song Senior Category, and 7 songs performed in the Carnival Song category.

19 artists who took the stage for 18 performances, but in the end there could be only 3 winners, one in each category. Well, in the Belize Senior category, Cecil Jenkins Jr., last year's winner in the Junior's category, stepped up and proved that last year's victory was not a fluke. We spoke with him shortly after he had learned that he won yet again:

Carnival Song veteran Ernestine Carballo took the stage for the last time as a competitor in National Song Competition, and managed to win with her song "Til Di Sun Come Up". We discussed the win with her:

Brianna Castro, the Belize Song Junior winner, has been awarded with $1,500 cash, a trophy and a professional music video. Sisters Rushay and Rushawn Figueroa placed second, and they won $1,000 cash and a trophy.

As we told you, in the senior Belize Song category, Cecil Jenkins Jr. won $6,000 cash, a trophy and professional music video product, and an opportunity to compete in a regional competition. He was also chosen as the winner People's Choice award. In that competition, the number online votes were tallied, and he was chosen as the artist with the most votes. That's an additional $500 that he won.

Second Place went to Wilson Grinage, who took home $3,000 and a trophy.

Ernestine Carballo won $6,000 cash, a trophy, and a music video, and an opportunity to compete in a regional competition. Barbara "Missy B" Herrera placed second, and took home $3,000 cash and a trophy. She also won the People's Choice award for the most online votes in the carnival song category. She was given another $500 cash prize for it.
