Island Pets at risk of Canine parvovirus
San Pedro may be facing a potential Canine parvovirus (parvo) outbreak. According to the San Pedro Animal Hospital (SPAH), there has been an escalating number of positive parvo cases over the past six weeks. Parvo is a highly contagious viral disease that can produce a life threatening illness in puppies and dogs. While SPAH cannot identify the cause of the increase in number of infections, it believes that the virus has come to the island through the increasing number of puppies being brought over from the mainland. Not only is the disease life-threatening, but it is also very contagious, and if kept unchecked, can spread across the island, endangering the lives of many pets. “It is hard to say why there is a sudden outbreak of this disease, but we believe that the high number of cases is coming from infected puppies being brought from the mainland. These puppies that people buy are not properly screened before being brought to the island and can carry disease that is not common here. As the number increases, Parvovirus is likely spreading between the dogs and puppies on the island,” said Droke.

San Pedro Town Library hosts Summer Reading Camp
The San Pedro Town Library started their annual Reading Camp on Monday, July 27th. The camp will run for two weeks culminating on Friday, August 7th. Each week, the camp sees a different group of children involved in various activities with the assistance of volunteer teacher students from the University of North Carolina, USA. According to Senior Library Assistant Brianne Leiva, the reading program targets children between the ages of five to eight and nine to thirteen. The first week of the camp was designed for the younger students, while the older children participate in the second week. From 2PM to 4PM, children read, enjoy story-telling, and even do arts and crafts. Every day, they choose an animal that the children are familiar with, and then create reading activities around the said animal. In the first day, reading exercises were done involving a local friend of ours, the frog! The camp participants were supported by the teacher students, who took turns in leading the various activities such as arts and craft, singing, reading and story writing projects.

Belmopan now has a population of over 20,000 – the smallest capital city in the continental Americas by population, It is the third-largest settlement in Belize, after Belize City and San Ignacio. It was founded in 1970, and is one of the newest national capital cities in the world. What's hot, what's not in the Caribbean
So, today's travel article is especially for all of you who come into Monroe Travel Service and say, " Give me a beach, not just any beach, but the best the Caribbean has to offer." Of course, I have my favorite five list from the gazillion resorts in the Caribbean, but, since our first wave of travelers have just returned, I thought it might be nice to give you their thoughts about what's hot and what's not this summer. Who knows? Perhaps if we do the heavy lifting — you know, tell you which beaches and resorts are stand outs — you will envision yourself sipping a tall mojito on the beaches of one of these sizzling Caribbean hot spots in the near future, too! "Off the grid at CAYO ESPANTO and loving it. We only have to ask to get anything we want! Yesterday the chef made us a lobster lunch that we ate under a coconut tree. Beach is small, but the view from the dock or our plunge pool is so amazing it does not matter. Best part is what's beneath the water: the Belize Barrier Reef system blows your mind. Suppose you know it is the longest barrier reef in the western hemisphere. An amazing laid back and quiet getaway — only 18 guests can be here. I understand you can rent the entire island for $14,000 a night! Must remember to ask my butler (or houseman) if that really ever happens!"
