"As much as I am repelled by the number of Ugly Americans that prowl, I hafta agree that there are just as many moronic natives, who don't give a shit."

I have to agree with Robert J's quote above...... AND, yes, there ARE a lot of "ugly American" tourists. And yes, there are a lot of ugly American "natives" at home. Let's admit it, most Caucasian tourists in Costa Rica are American. I think I've responded to several posts.

Simon was admonishing a group of tourists, not a nationality.
Pretty much the only non-tourists in that photo were the turtles.

the thing that I find astounding is that, at least with every article I have read, for a country that calls itself a leader in eco-tourism, there appears to be not one, not ONE, notice that this area is a nesting ground and people should be on the alert. I am not naive enough to think that simple signage would have stopped this atrocity at all, but should not a country that promotes itself in such a manner do SOMETHING to protect it's wildlife??

Yeh well, it might be the tourist that creates the demand, but in Belize for example, it is not the tourist that is harvesting the under size lobster and conch. frown
It should be the responsibility of the country and people of that country to protect its resources.
Klcman is right about that. And, maybe when BZ Bound arrives he can straighten out the locals. grin

Oh, and just so I can bring out a positive fact about Belizeans, it has been many, many years since I was served a manatee steak or turtle eggs for breakfast.
Or sitting down to a dynamite turtle stew at the Holiday Hotel.

Read "Jaguar" by Allen Rabinowitz. Belize has come a long way in conservation awareness. Education is the key.

Yes, Education is important..but so is enforcement..
The reason you haven't been served turtle eggs..is probably because of enforcement.

Not to sound too simplistic, but when there were less than 1000 people on the island and no development north of what is now the Phoenix or much south of Ramons, there was not a danger to the marine life by the people living off of it. There was ample habitat and sufficient population of the marine species to be able to sustain their levels. That is when San Pedro was basically a fishing village. Tourism and the accompanying development has changed that.
