Letter to the Editor: La Isla Basura
To the Editor:
We came 10 years ago for our honeymoon to La Isla Bonita and had returned for our 10 year anniversary on La Isla Basura. This visit had turned out to be a mistake.
For some years your island had been a secret tip for travelers. Nowadays there is nothing left to brag about except the myth of some “secret beach”.
This time we stayed North as we thought the new road would bring what seemed to have been missing for some years.
From the beginning we had noticed sewage on the lagoon side leaving infested waters, stinking smell with a possible health risk for everyone.
Rebar, piles of concrete and other construction material were just thrown into nature. Styrofoam, plastic and other trash items are carelessly lining the sides of the road on this La Isla De Plastico. Occasionally placed “No Trash” signs are surrounded with large trash piles.
Quite annoying for tourists is the endless number of advertising signs lining both sides of the road North. It gave us tourists the feeling and looks of a trashy Mexican highway rather than an island flair through nature.
Wolfe’s Woofer: New Bicycle
At the little outdoor restaurant I told the lady, “I’ll have three panades and three tacos.”
While I was sitting at the big picnic table my friend Jorge came in. He ordered and took a seat at the table with me.
“Where have you been, Jorge?” I asked. “I haven’t seen you lately.”
“I been on the mainland,” he said. “I work in San Ignacio five days and I come home on weekends. You ain’t seen my old lady have you?”
“Not in the last week or two.”
“I just got home an hour ago and she and the boy both gone. I know they around ‘cause there’s clothes on the line and the house is unlocked.”
“She’s probably out visiting her friends,” I told him.
It was Jorge Junior, who came riding up on a brand new bicycle.

Doctor Love: Friendships and Cheating
Dear Doctor Love,
On my daughter’s fifteenth birthday we are planning to have a quinceaños party for her. It is not an elaborate party compared to some that we have seen on this island but my daughter is well known and has a lot of friends. Her friends will be invited along with their parents.
Three months ago she had a fight with her best friend. This is one of those fights where both say they will never speak again and spend a lot of time pretending to ignore each other. These girls have been close since primary school and always went everywhere and did everything together. In my heart I know that eventually they will make up. This brings me to my problem. My daughter says that she does not want her ex-best friend to be invited. I talked to the friend’s mom and she said that her daughter says that if she is invited she won’t go. The mother and I had a good talk and we can’t figure out what to do. Please help.

Poets Corner: Value for money
By Abdulmajeed K Nunez. Politicians are employees
We transform them to rats guarding cheese
Is there any requirements?
Canvassing for endorsement
Is just another way of seeking employment?
Electioneering is an application
For the electorate to consent to them running the nation
They are nothing but managers of the nation’s wealth
Boy! It's pure mediocre deals we are being dealt
They should get annual appraisals
Then increment approval
The prime minister and the governor general share executive powers
But Sir Colville has become a rubber stamp governor
A former NIP member
Has somehow become a follower
Once the PM used to have to negotiate
For any bill that passed through the senate
Making sure it was in the people’s interest
Dame Minita did not just acquiesce
We need a new governor general be my guess

Rare Super Blood Moon to be visible Sunday night
A rare Super Blood Moon will be visible in most parts of the world, including Belize, on Sunday night as a lunar eclipse, coupled with a “super-moon”, a full moon at perigee, the moon’s closest point to Earth, take place creating the effect.
The Earth’s shadow will start making its way across the moon at 6:11 p.m. Belize time. The total eclipse begins at 8:11 p.m. and will peak at 8:47 p.m. ET. The total eclipse will last about 72 minutes.
The moon will become the ‘star’ of the night sky as it turns red in color during the unusual phenomenon, which involves it appearing 14 percent bigger.
The strange coloration will come as the light from the sun shines onto the moon after being refracted and scattered through the dust in Earth’s atmosphere as the planet passes in between the two, casting a shadow and causing the eclipse.

Just One Recipe for Three Perfect Days on Ambergris Caye!
I met Laura and her husband in Placencia last November…they were just opening up Caribbean Beach Cabanas – a super cute (I MEAN CUTE) resort they bought on a gorgeous stretch of beach in Placencia Village.
She also writes an amazing blog about her Ohio to Placencia experience. Pure Placencia. And now she is guest posting for me about the Placencia to Ambergris Caye experience. Eeek! I hope she likes it.
Oh yes…everyone does. Thanks Laura!
I live in Placencia, where I am told people come from other parts of Belize to vacation, because it is on par with Caye Caulker for laid-back slowness. Sometimes, I just crave a little action and busy-ness, and crowds! It was time to come up to Ambergris for a fun filled weekend :)
We took Tropic Air from Placencia to Belize City, which if you get Taco Girl’s code, you can get 10% off–it is under $100us. We decided to save some money and take the water taxi from Belize City, and we learned that you should fly into the Municipal airport as it saves money and time.

A financial guide to retiring abroad
Is it your goal to spend your golden years living in a hut on the beach of a Caribbean island?
Or do you dream of a second act running a vineyard in Tuscany? Retiring overseas can be both more enticing and more affordable -- depending on the locale -- than retiring in the United States. But a smooth transition requires careful planning.
"When you just begin thinking about it at a superficial infatuation level, it's a very exotic, romantic, sexy idea," says Kathleen Peddicord, publisher of Live and Invest Overseas, which publishes an annual ranking of the best places to retire overseas. "But the truth is that once you get into it, it's not easy."
Not all of the lifestyle changes that come with moving overseas will be ideal. Retirees will want to research how the move could affect their cost of living, tax bill and health. Here are some of factors to think about before you sell your belongings and buy a one-way plane ticket:
