Wolfe's Woofer: Keep Calm
"Hello, Melody," I said, when my phone rang last week. "What's up?" "I need a big favor," she said. "Can you watch Davin and Grayson for a while?" "Of course. That's what grandfathers are for." "No, Grayson! Put that down," were the first words out of her mouth when they came over to our house." Grayson looked at her. He looked at my phone that he had picked up from the table. He smiled at his mom and threw the phone to the floor. "Oh, my God," Melody said. "I'm going crazy. No, Davin! You are not going to the park. You're still on punishment for what happened at school yesterday. Sit on the porch and be quiet." "You seem to be under a lot of stress," I said.

Doctor Love: Marriage Issues
Dear Doctor Love, I have been with my guy for a year and a half. We got engaged and the wedding will be in about four months. I have a strong sense of moral values so we have never had sex. My plan is to wait until marriage. Then out of the blue he tells me that he is impotent. I think he needs to see a doctor and he does, too but after two months he still has not gone. Impotence will not work for me because I want children and the intimacy of sex. Please help. /s/ Baffled In Belize

Mexican cartels have more operations in Central America, Belize included
Three of Mexico's biggest drug trafficking organizations have moved 90 percent of their cocaine trafficking operations to Central America, indicates a new UN report. Two of the groups, the Pacific Cartel (an alliance of the Sinaloa Cartel and the Gulf Cartel) and the Zetas, have moved 90 percent of their US-bound cocaine trafficking operations to Central America, because of the aggressive strategy towards organized crime. They have also fought to control plazas to Central America, making Mexican organized crime the main criminal problem in the region. Belize is considered the Zetas' zone of operation. In El Salvador, the principal drug trafficking organization is the Pacific Cartel, which also operates in Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Since the 2009 coup in Honduras, the country has been used by both groups as a port of arrival for drugs from Colombia, Venezuela, and Bolivia.

Trashing Halloween in San Pedro is a barrel of laughs
We totally trashed Halloween this year. No, I didn't say we got trashed. I said we trashed Halloween. As in garbage. It is a big topic on the island these days because it is a big problem. As one guy would say, "Trash is huuuge!" So, to bring awareness to the problem, our First Friday Tres Cocos Roadside Trash Pick-up group decided to bring the trash to the people. Rose, Linda, Marie, Sue made beautiful gowns out of trash bags, Belikin beer tops, Crystal water bottles and the like. Thank you, especially, Bowen & Bowen for providing inspiration through all your disposable products which can be found on streets, lagoons, beaches and vacant lots all over Ambergris Caye. Christina dropped in as a very green Fairy Garbage Mother. The rest of the gang - Scott & Susan, Steve, Carmen and Wayne - went as trash cans. Not any trash cans. Reproductions of the ones that the San Pedro Town Council has promised us will be distributed north of the Sir Barry Bowen Bridge.

CCJ grants historic Constitutional relief to Maya people
The Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) says the Belize government breached the right of the Maya community to protection of the law by failing to ensure that the existing property regime, inherited from the pre-independence colonial system, recognised and protected Maya land rights. The 25 members of the Maya Leaders Alliance had been fighting for recognition and protection of Maya land rights before international courts and the courts of Belize for more than 20 years. Their appeal before the CCJ arose out of litigation precipitated by an incursion onto farm lands in the Golden Stream village by Francis Johnson, now deceased. While the appeal was being heard by the CCJ in Belize, the appellants and the Belize government entered into a Consent Order on April 22, 2015 which recognised that the Maya system of customary land tenure gives rise to property rights within the meaning of the Constitution of Belize.

Marine Reserves Need Stepping Stones to Help Fish Disperse
A massive field effort on the Belizean Barrier Reef has revealed for the first time that the offspring of at least one coral reef fish, a neon goby, do not disperse far from their parents. The results indicate that if marine protected areas aim to conserve such fishes, and biodiversity more broadly, then they must be spaced closely enough to allow larvae to disperse successfully between them. A growing body of scientific research has demonstrated that marine protected areas, particularly no-take marine reserves that exclude extractive activities like fishing, can increase biodiversity and sustain fisheries within the reserves, often with spillover benefits in surrounding areas. But despite the decline of coral reefs and fisheries worldwide, only 3.5 percent of the ocean is protected and only 1.6 percent of it is fully protected. Moreover, for reserves to conserve marine biodiversity most effectively, they must be embedded in networks that are connected such that marine life from one reserve can repopulate other reserves.

Caribbean employers' and workers' organisations to meet in Grenada
A regional bipartite meeting organised by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), together with the Caribbean Employers' Confederation and the Caribbean Congress of Labour, will take place from November 3 to 5 at the Grenadian by Rex Resorts, Point Salines, Grenada. The meeting follows a series of national workshops which were held between July and October 2015 in 14 CARIFORUM member states -- St Lucia, Grenada, Dominica, Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Haiti, Jamaica, Belize, the Bahamas, Barbados, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago. These national workshops determined joint points of action to formalise and institutionalise national social dialogue, and identified priority areas of concern. At the regional meeting each member state will report back on the actions agreed at the national workshops. Representatives from Caribbean employers' and workers' organisations will also develop positions on social and economic issues to be furthered at the regional level.

Beware monster weed
Sargassum is destroying Mexico's tourism economy. Could the monster weed do the same thing in the wider Caribbean? The following narrative is an extract from the Washington Post of October 28, 2015, a story titled, "Mexico deploys its navy to face its latest threat: Monster seaweed". OK. Joshua Partlow and Gabriela Martinez writing in the Washington Post Newspaper describe how, "From Barbados to Belize, and Cancun to Tulum, a brown seaweed known as sargassum, has invaded the Caribbean basin this year.'' The writers warn that, "Vast floating mats have washed up and buried beaches. The piles of seaweed grew more than four feet high in Antigua and forced some people to abandon their homes.''
