BTL mobile users know well enough about 4g frustration with BTL's overloaded data service. But the company says that in 2016 it's upgrading the 4gLTE - that's short for long term evolution which is the global standard in mobile internet.

A release issued today says the company expects to finalize the selection of its LTE vendor in matter of weeks and to begin deployment of the new network shortly thereafter.

is in the final stage sof selecting its mobile network vendor to build and launch its mobile LTE network in 2016. A press release says, quote, "the new…network is expected to be among the fastest, most robust…in the Americas."

SMART Says 4g LTE Coming This Month

It seems both phone companies are in a race to launch Belize's first 4g LTE mobile network. Last week we told you that BTL plans to launch in 2016. Well SMART says it plans to launch later this month.

The phone company issued a release today saying that it will begin to roll out the first 4g LTE network in Belize starting on December 15, 2015. The release says the roll out will start in Belize City and all towns and along major highways followed by san Pedro and caye Caulker in January of 2016.

SMART says its 4g LTE system will deliver speeds at least ten times faster than its present network. A release says the investment cost 9 million Belize dollars.

SMART Launch New 4GLTE Service

Tonight there is great news for Smart customers. According to the telecommunication company they are soon to roll out the first 4G LTE Network in Belize. According to representatives of the company, with this new network Smart will provide its customers the experience of wireless download speeds never before achieved on smart phones and other mobile devices in Belize at affordable prices.

Josue Carballo- SMART

“Actually SMART before Christmas, going towards the 15th we will be officially launching our LTE Network, our Long Term Evolution Network, actually it is a new technology it is the most advanced technology in the mobile networks through the world and we are really glad to be introducing this in time for Christmas and we are talking about Turbo charged Internet basically broadband type internet in your device and it is called 4G because it is the fourth generation we started, you know we started off with the analogue then we went with the digital phones and the 2G’s and now with the 3G’s that is more stable now under the 3G’s SMART phones and now 4G’s are zoom plus and it is an addition and it is going to be really nice toe of the line turbo charges speeds.” Linnet Canto- SMART

“We want to help people with the transition, we don’t want to have a network out there and the prices are so expensive that nobody can be able to upgrade to this new network so we kept our prices very, very good for this service so for example right now 1 Gig if you are getting 3G is $30.00 when we go to 4G is just going to be $35.00 for 1Gig so it is just a five dollars difference so it is very affordable.”

The new 4G long-term evolution will provide customers with increased capacity enabling the customer to experience unprecedented quality, reliability and speeds at least ten times faster than the present network. And in order to satisfy customers across the board, great promotions are on the way.

Josue Carballo- SMART

“This is going for $705.00 but we have some really great news for our customers with a 3G device SMART Customers and even SMART customers that want to enter into the internet service and the other guys with the other phones and if you want to trade in because it is an upgrade from their three point something G to a real 4G so we are talking that we are going to have special promotions starting this 15th of December we are going to have the normal price and the trade in price for these devices. We also be introducing the hotspots right now we have the high end phones some people have them and want to keep it and they want the speed, they want to quench their need for speed then they definitely have to be looking in purchasing the 4G mifi that will be at around $150.00 around that price range.”

Smart has invested BZ $9 million to bring this premier 4G technology to Belize.

Smart Goes 4G LTE in December

Linette Canto

The first 4G LTE network will be launched in Belize on December fifteenth when Smart plans to roll out a new and innovative system countrywide.  LTE, short for Long Term Evolution, promises increased capacity and unprecedented speed and reliability.  But what does it mean for Smart customers?  Well, according to Public Relations Manager Linette Canto, you can enjoy streaming music, watching videos on demand and business conferencing.  With an investment of nine million dollars, Smart says it continues to play a crucial role in increasing broadband connectivity in Belize.

Linette Canto, P.R., Smart

“We’re super excited we are going into the launch/rollout of our 4G LTE network. This is the first that ever that Belizeans will be able to enjoy what we call real 4G and we know that it will definitely impact customers in a positive way. Smart has been the very first in many areas. We have launched cutting edge technology time and time again but this is the icing on the cake, Belizean has been asking for it for a while now. We have done test and when we are testing it goes 20 times as fast as you would get on the 3G network. Now we are figuring with more people on it, it will not be as fast but we are predicting speed of up to ten times. Let’s say u are watching a movie now you will be getting buffering when we go 4G you don’t have to worry about that. It is going to be the ease and convenience of watching a movie form start to finish with very little buffering,. In addition business people will be able to do real time file sharing, video conferencing, live streaming, I mean the sky is the limit. So this will definitely change the surface of communication here in Belize. Customers will experience  a profound difference what is being sold presently by the other provider is called HSPA plus which is not 4G it is a part of the 3G family. What you will receive with Smart is real 4G, it’s LTE which is long term evolution and that is recognized around the world as the best that is being offered in 4G technology.”

The advent of LTE will also encourage the pervasive adoption and use of information and communications technology tools in everyday business operations.

BTL: 40 Mil For 4GLTE

BTL 4G - for many phone users saying that name is almost like a curse word - and that's because of the system's unreliability, its slowness and the overall congestion. Well the antidote to all that is 4G LTE - that LTE means long term evolution and it promises speeds of anywhere between 50 MEGS and 100 MEGS - that's at least 20 times faster than the speeds you are currently getting on 4G. But, don't get all hyped up yet - the service won't roll out until the end of the year.

Today BTL held a press conference at the Hour Bar to announce the deal with Chinese telecom giant Huawei to purchase the 4g LTE switch. Chairman of the Executive Committee Anwar Barrow says they want to BTL to go from the second slowest to the third fastest bandwidth provider in the region:

Anwar Barrow, Chairman, Exec. Committee - BTL
"What we are doing with LTE is really launching a round-year plan to bring the country into a more competitive standpoint and our objectives is to be top three within the region by 2020. Right now we are as a country at number 25 out of 27 and our ambition is to be within the top 3 by 2020."

Nestor Vasquez, Chairman - BTL Board
"This allows BTL to continue to do its part to fulfil the expressed objective of the government of Belize to expand the reach and quality of broadband access to Belizean citizens across our beautiful nation."

So what's it going to cost - and will it reach your neck of the woods? Barrow said a major part of the project is the installation of 5 dozen new cell sites:..

Anwar Barrow, Chairman, Exec. Committee - BTL
"The project is going to cost 40 million dollars Belize. For the next 5 years we plan to have the launched by the end of this year. The brand new 4G LTE mobile network will be the only LTE network in the country with extended and full nationwide coverage. It's a huge project. It involves not only the evolution of our current network and the installation of LTE at all 97 existing sites, but it involves the addition of 61 new sites. So we are going from 97 to over 150 sites countrywide. The LTE technology itself is so efficient that the amount of capacity that it can take is far and above what we realistically expect to put on it at least for certainly within the first few years."

So, it's 40 million dollars for countrywide coverage, but in December SMART rolled out its own 4g LTE which they invested 9 million dollars on? BTL's switch costs more than 400% more - so what's the difference:

Nestor Vasquez, Chairman - BTL Board
"Regarding with the first point to make with the 9 million announced by Speednet with our 40 million. I can only give you one simple answer, we are not buying the same thing. That's for sure, okay."

Indeed, BTL's switch is from Huawei, the Chinese company which has emerged as one of the largest telecom equipment manufacturing companies in the world. But, it's still an emerging company, not a long established name like Ericsson, CISCO or Alcatel. We asked the visiting executive about how Huawei stands up to its competitors:...

Tim Danks, VP, Professional Services - Huawei
"While we are the largest telecom provider, yet in some ways we act as a startup. How big is Huawei? We have over 180,000 employees, we have operate in 170 countries and our revenues total approximately 63 billion in 2015."

Anwar Barrow, Chairman, Exec. Committee - BTL
"This is a huge company. This is a global player - 180,000 employees, 70,000 in research and development alone. This is the Rolls-Royce of networks we are getting."

So, 4g LTE should roll out by the end of the year - but don't buy your LTE smartphone just yet because BTL says they have not yet made a decision on pricing.

BTL To Launch "Full Nationwide" 4G LTE In Belize With Huawei

Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL), under the banner of its DigiCell Mobile brand, and its telecommunications vendor-partner Huawei Technologies, today announced the roll-out of its nationwide 4G LTE network, expected for launch in December of this year.

The installation of DigiCell's brand new 4G LTE mobile network throughout Belize will position BTL to be the first and only telecommunications provider to have this high speed mobile service throughout the country – and at speeds and quality that will ultimately be superior to that of any provider within the country, or elsewhere throughout the Caribbean & Central American region.

The term "4G LTE" refers to the Fourth Generation, Long Term Evolution mobile technology that allows for data speed bursts surpassing 100 Megabytes per second (Mbps), alongside reduced latency and improved stability and capacity.

Huawei Technologies, also present at the today's press conference, has been selected as the vendor for the LTE network. Huawei is a global leader in mobile technology with over 240 4G LTE deployments worldwide. Overall, Huawei wireless networks are used by more than 500 mobile operators worldwide, serving more than 2 billion customers.

"BTL has made the very conscious decision to install LTE throughout the entire country wherever we have current mobile coverage – and not simply do a partial installation in select places. It is an important differentiator between us and our competitor, as we believe that it is critical that as many Belizeans as possible have access to this cutting edge high speed mobile technology," noted Anwar Barrow, Chairman of the BTL Executive Committee. "Furthermore, in our next phase of mobile deployment we will be adding more than 60 additional cell sites throughout the country, ensuring that DigiCell will have unmatched reach and capacity in Belize.

"We are also very pleased to work with a company of the stature and competence of Huawei Technologies. They will bring significant experience and expertise to the project – not only during the implementation phase, but even after the initial LTE installation. They are charged with ensuring that the LTE service will work optimally, and that our BTL team members are fully trained to manage the new network on an ongoing basis," Barrow continued.

The investment in a new nationwide 4G LTE network and related components is expected to top BZE $40 million (US $20 million). The investment is part of a broader strategic effort of the company to modernize both its mobile and landline plant to radically improve broadband connectivity and quality across the country.

"Huawei's goal in this long-term partnership with BTL for managed services, fixed broadband and LTE is to make DigiCell the fastest, most reliable network possible for all Belizeans," said He Ming, President of Huawei Technologies USA. "Our customer-centric approach also includes Huawei providing the latest training to the BTL team so they can ensure the ongoing quality of the network and the voice and data services delivered to their customers."
