A Carnaval Like No Other in Ambergris Caye

Men dressing up in drag and dancing through the streets of downtown San Pedro - there is nothing odd with that, once it is Carnaval time. The street dancing groups, called Comparsas, are always a highlight. They have become more than just groups of people dancing on the streets. Today they are well-choreographed performances with bigger, brighter and elaborate costumes, props and music. The men's group, whose members dress in drag, comes out in full force and is always there to give spectators a great laugh. Other groups dance to themed presentations collecting donations along the way that go towards a charity or non-profit organization.

San Pedro Carnaval is kicked off by cultural presentations, dances and exhibits at an opening ceremony that is followed by the three days of street dancing and painting. The celebrations fall yearly three days before Ash Wednesday and the commencement of Lent. Caranval kicks off the religious celebratory aspect of Easter in the Catholic community of San Pedro.

The street comparsas and painting take place in the afternoons, running into the early evening on all three days. Painting is allowed with water paint only; it is advised to use clothing that you don't mind being ruined by paint.

After a day of drizzly cold rain, yesterday was the most gorgeous day on Ambergris Caye. For the very first day of Carnaval. Three days of parties and painting leading up to Lent.

I headed into town early to take a look at the pre-festivities. Day One there would be music and kids running amock with painting and eggs (ILLEGAL) and fun.

The New Sensations Band (they are GOOD!) was setting up and the Belizean staple - THE WALL OF SPEAKERS.

Central Park is invaded with painting revelers

Carnaval Ends with a Bang, is Major Tourist Attraction

"I love this so much, I want to do it every year," commented San Pedro Carnaval Queen Melida Pereira about her participation in the Carnaval Comparsas (street dancing). "Why did I not know of all this fun." Melida participated in the comparsas as part of her winning the Mrs. Reina del Carnaval pageant, now on its third year and a welcome staple to the Carnaval celebrations in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize.

And while Melida danced, performed and sang her heart out for three consecutive days, alongside four other comparsa groups, hundreds of tourists who visited the island during the festivities enjoyed the celebrations. We met first-time visitors who were thrilled about the painting and others who have been visiting the island for 20 years now, only during Carnaval because they love the tradition so much.

Bailando a Todo Color: Carnaval 2016, a festival of colors

Tuesday, February 9th was the highlight of festivities, as it was the last day of painting and comparsas presentations. Everyone came out in full force to celebrate the islands tradition. New Sensation Band, DJ Debbie and DJ Dalla provided musical entertainment at Central Park starting at 6PM to a crowd of carnaval partiers. Since this was the final day, the comparsas went all out.

Of course, the comparsas groups were not only performing for the crowd's entertainment, but they were also hoping to catch judges' eyes and win the title of top comparsas. In the end, it was the San Pedro AIDS Commission Comparsas group who took the coveted 2016 title.

Carnaval celebrations ended on Wednesday, February 10th with the burning of Juan Carnaval. To close off the celebration, islanders participate in the reading of Juan Carnaval's will, followed by the traditional burning of his body. The burning of Juan Carnaval is an island tradition done to expel bad luck and negative vibes from the island.

CARNAVAL 2016 - BURNING OF DON JUAN CARNAVAL

On Wednesday, February 10, Don Juan Carnaval said its goodbye's to another great year of Carnaval.

Every year the burning of Don Juan Carnaval takes place at Central Park after the 7:00 p.m. mass. Before burning Don Juan Carnaval, his will is read where he leaves all his riches and advise to the town of San Pedro. Don Juan Carnaval was a very wealthy man in San Pedro. Apart from being popular for his money, he was also popular for being the life of the party and a ladies man.

Legend has it, that if Don Juan Carnaval does not get burnt, the town will be cursed with a year of bad luck. What do you think?

  • Dejen tanto vehículo y pónganse a caminar.

ENGLISH WILL:

Good night to all my sons, daughters, step-children, nieces and nephews, and friends. Today I want to bid farewell to all; but before I do, I have to give you some bad news. This year, with so many bars and strip clubs, I went to Captain Iguana's and Blue Hole Bar y spent all my money on women and rum. So this year, all I have to give is my advices and knowledge. So here it goes:

  • Stop fighting with one another like cats and dogs. After all, when the food is scarce, both cat and dogs eat from the same plate.
  • Spray on repellent and clean your yards and homes, because if you do not die an alcoholic, the Zika virus will take you down.
  • Park your vehicles and start walking, because when your butt starts getting big, you run out of excuses on whom to blame.
  • Don't lose your minds over fling, because when your gray and old, no one will want to clean your behind.

Lastly, to my lovely San Pedro, like always, I wish you all good vibes and that you all live in harmony. May everyone have a year filled with prosperity, without disasters and lots of party! Long live the tradition! Long live the San Pedro Carnaval!
