FISHING REPORT

March 27th - April 2nd, 2016

Weather Conditions: Mostly Fair weather all week

Winds: Moderate winds from 10-20 most of the week from the east

Water Temperature: Temp: 80 F. degrees

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Many first bonefish this week, to name just a few there was one for Susanne (who traveled from Sweden to get this done), one for Julie and several others that were very proud of their well earned bonefish pins. El Pescador recognizes anglers on their last night with bonefish, permit, tarpon or grand slam pins based on their fishing success during their stay here at El Pescador. We are happy to say there are EL Pescador pins scattered on hats, luggage, shirts and fishing vests throughout the world!

PERMIT (Palometta): Young Nathan beat his older brother (Illex) and his Dad (Adam) to the first permit of the week! Illex followed through with two permit later on during the week! Mike was thrilled with his first ever permit, Ben landed 3 count them 3 permit this week to put a punctuation mark on the end of the week. Even in the windy weather, permit were a little more cooperative than normal. Mikael (also from Sweden) landed his first permit and it was a gorgeous 17 pound fish that ate a crab fly.

TARPON (Sabalo): Our tarpon heroes of the week are Adam and Richard. Adam's was a beautiful fish about 50 pounds and Richard's was just as pretty but weighed in at 10 pounds. Richard's was interesting in that he caught his tarpon on his bonefish rig, The fish ate a crazy Charlie and didn't wear through the 12 pound leader. That is quite a feat!

OTHER SPECIES: 2 species of jacks, 3 kinds of snappers, snook, barracudas, and lots more!

GRAND SLAM: No grand slams this week but there were 2 very close calls.

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONEFISH - The usual suspects, Christmas Island specials, gotcha and more

FISHING REPORT

Weeks of April 3rd - April 9th, 2016

Weather Conditions: Mostly Fair weather all week, A day or two of clouds.

Winds: Moderate winds form 5-15 most of the week from the east

Air Temperature: Highs were between 83 and 88 with lows in the mid 70's

Water Temperature: Temp: 80 F. degrees

Barometric Pressure: 29.93 - 30.11

Sunrise: 5:40 am Sunset: 6:07 pm

Moonphase: The new moon was on April 7th.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Danine showed the field that you don't need to have a guide to catch bonefish here at EL Pescador, as she was very successful fishing on her own! Everyone at the lodge got a fair share of bonefish due to the good weather. Nothing like sunny skies to help locate those fish. It was great to have Bill and Megan back this year as they were married here just over 2 years ago, the bonefish welcomed them back as well!

PERMIT (Palometta): Louis, David, Joe, Jesse all landed permit as part of their grand slam victories, Mark bagged a permit quickly one morning. Caleb got a permit. Ryan got a permit that was meant to be, the line and backing got wrapped and tangled feeling like the line would break, he eased off and he was able to untangle the line and land the fishgreat work under pressure! Sean got 2 permit on a nice day out with his Dad Greg, The lovely Johanne needs special mention for her first permit as well.

TARPON (Sabalo): Louis, David, Joe, Jesse all landed tarpon as part of their grand slam quests, Lynn landed a tarpon from the next dock over from us on his own, Noel landed a nice Silver King and she was quite proud, Eric was also lucky with tarpon and got one to eat that ended up in a great fight and the guide leadered the fish next to the boat.

OTHER SPECIES: Snook, 2 species of jacks, 3 kinds of snappers, snook, barracudas, and lots more!

GRAND SLAM: 3 yes, Three Grand Slams this week plus a soft slam! Joe, was able to land all three species during his stay so he gets credit for a soft slam. Normally that would be big news. but 3 separate grand slams overshadowed the feat. Louis neatly wrapped up his grand slam while his lovely partner Johanne was a tarpon short on the same day. Jesse got his slam early in the week and is floating on cloud nine! David rounded out the week with his slam to punctuate the great fishing week we had.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Congratulations to young Mary Jane who was so proud to land her first bonefish and even prouder to receive her bonefish pin! The bonefishing was top notch all week with one boat landing more 30 bonefish in a day. With lots of sun this week, they were easy to find and pretty cooperative. Anglers from 7 to 70 years old all got a taste of bonefish fever.

PERMIT (Palometta): Wow, the permit were happy this week (until they gat hooked that is) Over 16 permit were landed that I have record of, my guess is a few more were landed by some humble folks that did not report them for fear of seeming greedy! The youngest of the permit masters was Walker at 11 years old, quite a feat for any age. Our permit couple of the week was Hobbie and Jenn as they landed 2 each, Jenn's Dad Jack got a well deserved permit, Chuck had a single day out but landed 2 permit, Sam got 2, Jack added 3 more, Young Nick got his first permit, and Ron rounded out the group recording another permit. The permit fishing doesn't get any better.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): BONEFISH BONEFISH BONEFISH Jeff from Seattle landed 40 in a day and came home an hour early to boot! Several first ever bonefish were caught with Carl, Gary, and Tim collecting their first El Pescador bonefish awards, bonefish seemed like the appetizer served to many guests just to wet their appetites for a try at permit and tarpon!

PERMIT (Palometta): Permit were still on fire this week, Jared got 3, his buddy Cameron landed one, Jeff's permit was part of his grand slam day, Steve (my friend from Alaska days) got his very first permit ever, and Lars and Mary doubled up on their boat late in the week to land a nice permit each.

TARPON (Sabalo): Jeff was first on the board with a tarpon that was part of his grand slam, Mike got a beauty; and numerous other anglers jumped fish, got fish to eat, got snubbed by a following fish or had a bunch of shots. FISHING REPORT

Weeks of April 24th - April 30th, 2016

Weather Conditions: Fair weather all week.

Winds: Moderate to begin the week rising to 10-15 late in the week mostly from the east

Air Temperature: Highs were between 85 and 90 with lows in the mid 70's

Water Temperature: Temp: 80 F. degrees

Barometric Pressure: 29.72 - 29.95

Sunrise: 5:26 am Sunset: 6:11 pm

Moonphase: The last quarter moon was on April 29th.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): "Oh, it is another bonefish" with a slightly disappointed tone. Some permit had just been seen, and although the cast was good the bonefish snuck in front and ate his fly first. It brings to mind how many bonefish are in our waters that an angler whose primary goal of the trip was to catch his first bonefish, now is looking at them like they are nuisance now that he sees a permit! I guess it is a great problem to have, and I constantly remind myself how precious these bonefish are. Our furthest flung guests were Jacqui and Barry. They came all the way from the UK for 2 weeks specifically fish our bonefish and they were not disappointed. Everyone who went out regardless of ability got some bonefish with the biggest reporting in at 6 pounds! Double digit days were common before the wind set in later in the week.

PERMIT (Palometta): Samuel, who handles most of the in and out luggage here at El Pescador, landed a permit off the dock on a hand line this week! The fish was released in good shape and Samuel is still grinning. RD (Dr. RD really) was able to land a permit in his short stay with us, Phil got a big one as part of his slam day, Keith, our multi repeat guest from Texas, landed his first permit ever, a snook shortly after that, and then jumped the tarpon but watched in awe as it threw the hook super slam was just a moment away!

TARPON (Sabalo): The self proclaimed luckiest angler at the resort was Jo Ellen who landed a nice tarpon beside her happy son Thomas. RD hooked into a huge tarpon, one of the first migratory fish we have seen this year. Apparently the fish ate about 10 feet from the boat! What a thrill. Lars jumped 7 one day ( only landed one), Marek got 2 tarpon on his 2nd and 3rd day out, John worked the tarpon daily and landed 2 this week and he is fishing into next week so I expect more in his near future.

OTHER SPECIES: Sharks, Jacks, ladyfish, snappers, cudas, shad.

GRAND SLAM: Phil's Grand Slam this week was remarkable, one because it was a slam and two, because Phil is 89 years old. I was very proud to award him a grand slam pin as believe he is the oldest angler here at EL Pescador to have done so! Wow!

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONEFISH - you name it and it seems to work!

FOR PERMIT - Christmas Island Special, bunny gotcha, some Bauer like crab patterns

FOR TARPON - White Toad, black death, Green toad, olive toad,

This Week's Summary:

Phil's grand slam is the moment of the week just before the wind turned it up!

Weeks of May 1st - May 8th

Weather Conditions: Fair weather all week.

Winds: Moderate winds from the east most days between 10-15 mph

Air Temperature: Highs were between 83 and 88 with lows in the mid 70's

Water Temperature: Temp: 80 F. degrees

Barometric Pressure: 29.74 - 30.03

Sunrise: 5:22 am Sunset: 6:15 pm

Moonphase: The new moon was on May 6th.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): First bonefish awards go to guests this week like Jim and Ron, who started out fishing exclusively for bonefish, but caught enough of the silver ghost that they ventured out into the land of permit and tarpon. It was OK with them that were not successful in that mission as they had unexpected success in hooking bonefish!

PERMIT (Palometta): ): The permit success continues to prove that the catch and release law has really helped this species. Congrats to Emily for the first permit of the week, AJ and Susan used their only permit to the best advantage, adding the bonefish and tarpon the same day, Stephen landed a lovely permit, Joe got his first, and John landed 2 permit on one of his days on the water.

TARPON (Sabalo): Jack started the tarpon parade with 2 nice ones on his first day, John got another shortly thereafter with Stephen, AJ, & Susan landing tarpon as part of their slam days. Some of the Migratory tarpon are showing up a little early this month as several big ones were hooked and lost almost immediately.

OTHER SPECIES: Sharks, Jacks, ladyfish, snappers, cudas, shad, sting rays

GRAND SLAM: 2 Grand Slams this week plus the lesser but still noble soft slam. Our Grand Slam wall of fame got a little bigger this week with Susan and A.J.'s names added for their success with the big three. Weather Conditions: Fair weather all week. (Our last rain was in February!)

Winds: Moderate winds from the east most days between 10-15 mph

Air Temperature: Highs were between 83 and 90 with lows in the mid to upper 70's

Water Temperature: Temp: 80 F. degrees

Barometric Pressure: 29.92 - 30.02

Sunrise: 5:18 am Sunset: 6:18 pm

Moonphase: The first quarter moon was on May 13th.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): The bonefish totals were off the chart this week with the Orvis Saltwater Fishing School hosted by Pete Kutzer. It was a 4 night event held early in the week. The school was followed by the start of the 4 day Orvis Bonefish Bonanza with over 20 anglers participating in the exciting event. I would like to congratulate all the school members as they all landed bonefish; and for most it was their first saltwater fish of a lifetime. So Kudos to Bob and Connie, Chou and Buoa, Joe and Priscilla, Mary and Chris, Lee and Julie, Ken, Dennis, Bill, Brot, Chuck, Charlie, John and Louise, Karen and Ryan, just to name a few of the guests who racked up the bonefish, and some went went on to tackle some permit and tarpon. Father and son team, Ron and RJ returned to EL Pescador for their second Bonanza as did husband and wife Dick and Jean. Jason, Stuart, Jeff, Steve, Glenn, Bill, John, Aaron, Phil, David, Steve, Dijon, David, Bill, John, the list goes on. It is safe to say that the Orvis Helios 2 rods that were included in the trip were worked hard!

PERMIT (Palometta): The permit fishing was pretty darn good as well. Chuck nabbed one early on in the week, Ryan followed suit shortly thereafter , Returning guests Ken and Dennis were dying to catch permit; and they were each rewarded for their hard work and perseverance. All the fish were between 5- 15 pounds, and they ate a variety of patterns including crabs and shrimp. Several of the permit were caught while wading which is quite a thrill.

TARPON (Sabalo): Some more migratory fish were jumped this week, but the only man left standing was a woman! Her first tarpon of her young fishing career and it was the only tarpon to the boat all week. Way to go Buoa! Women rule!

OTHER SPECIES: Baracudas, a couple big snappers, Jacks

GRAND SLAM: Alas, no slams were recorded this week!

So many names to list but all the guides were busy this week, and lots of bonefish were landed. FISHING REPORT

Weeks of June 5th - June 11th, 2016

Weather Conditions: Partly Cloudy and dry all but two days where we had some clouds and a bit of rain.

Winds: The winds were moderate at 5-10 mph from all directions, changing every few hours.

Air Temperature: Highs were between 86 and 91 with lows in upper 70's and low 80's

Water Temperature: Temp: 81 F. degrees

Barometric Pressure: 29.73 - 30.01

Sunrise: 5:15 am Sunset: 6:26 pm

Moonphase: The new moon is on June 4th

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): The Orvis Bonanza lived up to it's name with everyone attending racking up the bonefish. Some first time bonefishers were pretty successful. A big thanks goes out to the Orvis leaders Dale and Tucker for their part in making it a smooth and happy week. The Orvis trip was 5 nights and 4 days of fishing but several of the guests stretched it out to 7 nights. Our big bonefish of the week was Geoff's 7-pound bonefish, a real trophy in these waters.

PERMIT (Palometta): Another solid week of permit fishing. Normally a 10 permit week would be stellar results, but lately this is just another week of great permit fishing. Our permit stars were Sam, Cody, John, Bob, Geoff, Matt, Eric and Merv. The big fish of the week was around 20 pounds and the average was between 4-8 pounds. Permit are relatively slim when they are young, but as they age they bulk up and put on some weight known as "shoulders".

TARPON (Sabalo): Russ got the first tarpon of the week and jumped 4 more that same day, John bested him with 1 to the hand and 6 in the air! Cody had a huge 100 pound plus fish right up to the boat that was pretty well whipped before it flipped off leaving everyone asking "did you touch the leader?" More fish were jumped and many more were cast to with results ranging from total spook, total ignore to a long follow without a bite.

OTHER SPECIES: Jacks, Snappers, Barracudas, Snook

GRAND SLAM: No grand slams this week.

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONEFISH - Christmas Island Specials, Crazy Charlies, and various other patterns

FOR PERMIT - Christmas Island Specials, Bauer Crab Olive, Squimpy

This Week's Summary:

A very quiet week here at the lodge meant the anglers had the water to themselves. Orvis' Bonefish Bonanza went off without a hitch with lots more than bonefish being caught.
