Over the next five weeks, one hundred and ninety villages from around the country will be holding village council elections in all six districts. With the next general election not due until the year 2020, the Barrow administration remains in control and with that very few villages will be contested by the main opposition.

Love News understands that the Leader of the Opposition, John Briceno is making his rounds around the country meeting with interested slates for the upcoming elections and while he is backing a few, it wonít be much of a contested event in the rural areas.

The first set of elections is slated for Sunday, June 5 and those will take place in seven villages in the Corozal District, namely, Calcutta, Ranchito, San Joaquin, Carolina, San Pedro, Cristo Rey and Yo Chen. In the Orange Walk District, village council elections will take place in San Lazaro, Trinidad, Tower Hill, San Antonio and Santa Cruz. For the Belize District, elections are slated for the villages of Maskall, Bomba, Boston, Corozalito, Lucky Strike, Rockstone Pond, Santana, St Annís and Gales Point. In the Cayo District, the villages are Valley of Peace, Unitedville, Blackman Eddy, Cristo Rey. For the Stann Creek District, the villages are Independence, Placencia, Santa Cruz, Maya Centre and Sittee River. Meanwhile, the Toledo District will see village council elections taking place for Big Falls, Boom Creek, Cattle Landing, Elridgeville, Forest Home, Santa Ana, Aguacate, Blue Creek, Mabil Ha, Mafredi, San Benito Poite, Santa Teresa and Jordan.

In village council elections, the Chairman or Alcalde is the head while six persons are elected to serve.
