Dates confirmed for the Annual Eco-Challenge Kayak Race
Preparations for the twelfth annual Lagoon-Reef Eco-Challenge Race are underway, and the dates have been set for August 6th and 7th. Once again kayakers will take the challenge of navigating 26 miles of Ambergris Caye waters. The race will start at 6AM from the Sunset Boulevard near the Honourable Louis Sylvester Sporting Complex, heading north through the mangrove channels of the lagoon area of Ambergris Caye.
Organizer of the event Elito Arceo says that the main purpose of the race is to sensitize residents to the importance of the eco-system in and around the island, while at the same time promoting the best ways possible to conserve it.
The route of the race will remain the same and it will be clearly marked so that participants don’t get lost, while the rules for the race will remain the same as well. On the first day, kayakers will paddle their way up to Basil Jones in the Bacalar Chico Marine Reserve, where they will camp out for the night. On the second and final day of the competition, kayakers will paddle southwards along the eastern coast of Ambergris Caye. On the last leg of the race, kayakers will then make a final sprint and finish the race in front of Central Park.
Persons interested in registering for the race, volunteering or wanting to learn more about the Eco-Challenge are encouraged to contact Elito Arceo at 610-1690 or the Seaduced Office at the Vilma Linda Plaza.
