Dia de San Pedro 2016 festivities culminated on Sunday, July 3rd with a kayak race that saw nine teams paddling around the island in hopes of winning the grand prize. Participants competed in the Male, Female and Junior categories, racing from Boca del Rio Park to around the southern part of the island. Shortly after 10AM, kayakers went past the Sir Barry Bowen Bridge, headed to the leeward side of the island. They made their way through thick mangrove wetlands and circled round the southern portion of the island after navigating through a small channel that connects the lagoon and the Caribbean Sea.

In a fast sprint, Team Paddle Shop comprised of Chris Guydis and Amado Cruz, crossed the finish line first, taking the top prize in the male category with a total time of 2:47:09. They received a cash prize of $500 along with their medals. In second place was Team Double Impact comprised of Wilberto Daniels and Kenrick Daniels who finished with a time of 2:51:45. They took home a cash prize of $400 and medals. In third place was Team Moringa A with solo member Earnie Martin who finished the race with a time of 2:53:25 and winning a cash prize of $300. In the Female Category, first prize went to Team Island Girls, comprised of Emelie Cerpa and Venancia Choc; they received a cash prize of $200. Team Guydis Girls, with Avis Guydis and Christa Guydis, was also awarded for their participation with a cash prize of $175. There was a moment when this team was about to quit the race when one of the paddlers was unable to continue, however, their dad, Chris Guydis assisted the team in finishing the race.

On Friday, July 1, 2016, the stage was colorfully lit with dance presentations that reminded us of the past when San Pedro was only but a fishing village. Dressed in typical mestizo dresses, the dance group from Palmar, Orange Walk graced us with el baile de la botella, which is a crowd's favorite since the dancers have dance with a bottle on their heads without it dropping. This dance was performed back in the day especially during Carnaval time in San Pedro town.

Following their performance, the San Pedro Dance Academy took the stage and also graced us with old mestizadas which reminded us of the true San Pedrano culture.

Adding more culture to this event, was the ever so popular, Black and White Charikanari Dancers who with their live drumming and dances depicting the daily life of a garinagu had everyone entertained.

And lastly, to end the night, Rompe Raja got everyone on their feet with their catchy tunes and beats.

On Saturday, July 2, 2016, the stage was filled with even more cultural dances show casing the dances of our ancestors and neighbors from Mexico.

El Ballet Folklorico de Chetumal, a dance academy from Chetumal, danced various presentations from throughout the region of Mxico - from Chiapas to Yucatn and Quintana Roo.

Following their presentation was the phenomenal Belize National Dance Company with their outstanding dance presentations and acrobatics. The performed various genres of music - from cuban melodies to rhythmic dances from Africa and even caribbean melodies.

During the dance presentations, we had a surprise show, as a quinceaera was having out celebrating with her friends and went on stage to perform a dance that she presented at her party.

And to end the night with a bang, Gilharry 7 Band took the stage and had everyone dancing with uptempo beats and classic cumbias and soca songs.
