Action Twenty 24 ministry holds annual sports camp
Action Twenty 24 is back in San Pedro hosting their 5th annual Sports Ministry Summer Camp. The one week camp started on Monday, July 18th and culminated on Friday, July 22nd. Campers had the opportunity to learn skills in football, volleyball, basketball and baseball. Held in collaboration with Lighthouse Christian Radio, the camp hosted over 40 children ages 6-13 each morning at the New Horizon Seventh Day Adventist School, and in the afternoon at the Angel Nuñez Auditorium.
According to camp organizer Chris Bonnett, one focus of the camp is to teach children great sportsmanship. “Our emphasis is on sports, as well as leadership skills. We teach the campers how to come together as a team, and work together effectively. We just want to show them how to love someone they don’t know and be respectful. I think with the word of God and leadership skills, they will make better decisions as they get older,” said Bonnet.
San Pedro FC wins 3-0 vs Carlston FC in McClean Insurance U-17 football tournament
The San Pedro FC scored three goals in six minutes to celebrate a 3-0 victory over Carlston FC of Belize City when the McLean Insurance Brokers Under-17 football tournament organized by the Belize District Football Association kicked off at the M.C.C. grounds in Belize City on Saturday, July 16.
Jhoan Alvarez and Dixon Paguada led the San Pedro offensive supported by Arnold Flowers and Ian Pou on the wings, and Christian Medina and David James at midfield. The Carlston defenders Jamil Awayo, Shawn Norberto and Jonathan Casimiro held off their attacks for the first 15 minutes of play.
The Carlston boys could not get the ball past midfield, as the San Pedro defence Eduardo Ack, Jorge Castillo and Wilson Cruz were there to break up the plays and share the ball out to their wingers. Arnold Flowers drove the ball solo up the left flank, and the Carlston’s goalie seeing his defenders outplayed, came out of his goal to meet Flowers’ charge. The wily Arnold, seeing the goalie was off his line, took advantage of the space to nimbly lob over the goalie’s head to bounce into the empty net: 1-0 in the 15th minute.
SPTC hosts summer camp activities for island children
Summer in La Isla Bonita usually means any number of camps set up to keep children active during the school break. Sports are a top choice of activity, and this year is packed with adrenaline, team work, and most of all, fun! On behalf of the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC), the San Pedro Sports Committee introduced a sporting summer camp that started on Monday, July 18th and will run until Friday, August 12th.
Sports Coordinator Kent Bob Gabourel, along with Councilor in charge of Sports, Hector Alamilla, is hosting the camp. In its first week, around 30 children joined them at the Honorable Louis Sylvester Complex to practice the basics of football. The campers were taught how to line up on a field, control a ball, shoot, pass, and the general rules of the game.
The camp is split in two sessions, one in the morning, and the other in the afternoon. Gabourel has indicated that the kids are very enthusiastic and willing to learn basic skills, while having fun. Since the camp runs for a month, different sporting activities will take place each week.

BTL Compensation Award Update
The Government of Belize (GOB) informs that a dispute has arisen between the Government and the Ashcroft Alliance over the recent BTL compensation award handed down by the Permanent Court of Arbitration.
GOB, after the most careful examination by a number of its experts, argues that the wrong rate of exchange was applied by the Arbitral Tribunal in arriving at its ultimate compensation figure. GOB also submits that the Tribunal’s calculation of interest was mathematically incorrect. Both mistakes by the Tribunal prejudiced GOB and resulted overall in larger sums being awarded than were justified. GOB has 30 days from the date of the award to seek rectification, and its overseas lawyers have now prepared and are filing the relevant application.
For its part, the Ashcroft Alliance questions the currency split used by GOB last week in making the first half payment of the award. It will be recalled that the award was divided into two by the Tribunal, with 40% of the total representing the non-Accommodation Agreement portion and 60% representing the Accommodation Agreement portion. The latter, according to the Settlement Agreement, is payable in Belize dollars and can only be spent to fund projects in Belize for the benefit of the people of Belize. The 40% is payable in United States currency and belongs entirely to the Ashcroft Alliance as compensation for the acquisition of their BTL shares.
Camp Starfish: Special fun for Special kids!
School is officially over, and an array of camps have been sprouting across La Isla Bonita. Among them is the Ambergris Caye Camp Starfish, a free two-week camp focused on children with mental and physical disabilities. Camp Coordinator Dalia Alamilla is more than excited to be hosting the camp at the Lions Den on July 18th, 20th, 22nd, 25th, 27th, and 29th.
Thanks to the $3,252 donation from the Blue Water Grill and The Phoenix, Camp Starfish offers activities that include story time, music & movement, arts and crafts, sensory activities and more! In addition, children from different districts will be attending the camp.
A total of 28 campers have registered, but more are expected to participate throughout the week. This year, three special education teachers from Massachusetts and North Carolina, USA have offered their assistance to help out. Volunteers also include students from San Pedro High School and their Peer Group, six volunteers from Projects Abroad, and other community members who have expressed interest in wanting to help. If anyone else would like to volunteer, they are welcome to go to the Lions Den to join in.

Citizenship programs in the Caribbean attractive to investors
The economist points out that if the UK pursues an exit from the EU in keeping with the Brexit referendum results, there may be what she terms “implications” for travel and visa requirements for Citizenship-by-Investment passport holders, to the Schengen zone in particular.
In general, she notes, opponents to Caribbean passport programmes believe that nationality is not something that can be sold; and the granting of rights and freedoms to persons without any historic or cultural affinity with the country is deemed by some to be unacceptable.
