Bus busts up the Terminal in Belize City
Travelers and a shop owner at the bus terminal in Belize City had to run for their lives on Thursday evening as a Westline Bus drove unexpectedly through the security railing and into a shop.
Eye witnesses say the incident happened shortly after 5:00 p.m. when the bus pulled into the station. The driver got out of the bus, and shortly after the bus moved off causing people to scatter for safety.
The Department of Transport had to re-route passengers through the yard of the terminal itself for them to board their busses because the express bus, headed for San Ignacio, had crashed right by the entrance to the user waiting area of the terminal.
The shop owner made a narrow escape before the bus plowed into his shop causing an estimated $10,000 worth of damages, not withstanding the damage done to the property of the Transport Department.
The authorities called in for an inspector to assess whether or not the vehicle had mechanical problems, which would determine whether or not it was the fault of the driver for carelessly not putting the bus in park before exiting.
Up to press time, police had not stated whether or not the driver would be prosecuted.
