September Celebrations 2016 Theme announced

There's no doubt that Belize's independence is the biggest celebration of the year, and with September fast approaching, the first news regarding the festivities has been announced. On Thursday, June 16th, after careful deliberation by the National Celebrations Commission, "Sovereign and Strong- Together as one" was selected as the official theme for 2016.

The theme was submitted by Argelia Mendoza Ken, a teacher and counselor at the Belize High School of Agriculture in the Orange Walk District.

In an interview with CTV-3, Ken explained her thoughts behind coming up with the winning theme. "Our country has been facing a lot of difficult times, where our sovereignty and our status as Belizeans has been challenged. However, these challenges have only made us see a different face of Belize, where we have united as Belizeans to defend and protect our patrimony, regardless of race, of culture, of religion. So beside all the bad stuff that has been happening, it has brought out the best in us, and what better time to celebrate our accomplishments than during our patriotic holidays," said Ken.

The National Celebrations Commission is pleased to announce the release of the 2016 Playbill and Calendar of Events, which includes celebrations, commemorations and other programs around the country.

On Wednesday, Aug. 24, the free booklet will be distributed throughout the districts, and is also available at the NICH Administration office in Belize City, as well as the Bliss Center and the Belize Tourism Board. The calendar covers events taking place in August and September, and includes programs sponsored by a wide variety of organizations and businesses.

One major change in the 2016 lineup is that there will be no St. George's Caye Official Opening Event due to damages related to Hurricane Earl. Instead, there will be an address by Hon. Elodio Aragon Jr., Chair of the National Celebrations Commission. This address will be broadcast nationwide.

Celebration highlights include:

Queen of the Bay Pageant, Aug. 27
Carnival King & Queen, Sept. 3
 Mas Camp, Sept 7-8
 Pan Yaad, Sept. 9
St. George's Caye Day ceremony, Sept. 10
Miss Belize Universe Pageant, Sept. 10
 Jouvert, Sept. 17
 Carnival Road March, Sept. 18
 Official flag raising, Sept. 20
 Independence Day ceremony, Sept 21

In addition to the events above, there will be The Belize History Association Annual Lecture (Sept. 7), and The Belize @35 Lecture will be held in late November. These two events are being held under the auspices of the Institute for Social and Cultural Research).

Due to damages from Hurricane Earl, there will not be the usual Official Launch of the September Celebrations at St. George's Caye this year.

Instead, Hon. Elodio Aragon, Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture, will launch the celebrations with an address that will be broadcast across the nation.

Otherwise, the National Celebrations Commission and its partners are planning a full slate of activities for September.

SEPTEMBER CHILDREN'S RALLY 2016

Once again, the Ministry of Education, under the directive of Ms. Nelma Jones, organized the Children's Rally which inlcuded presentations by each school to show their patriotism.

On the official part of the program, students of the New Horizon S.D.A. School opened the event with the Belize National Prayer, followed by a flute rendition by the San Pedro High School students.

Mistress of ceremonies, Faith Edgar, invited a student from ACES to offer the welcome address which was followed by guest speaker, also former valedictorian alumni of SPHS, Miss Virginia Vasquez, where she gave a few words of inspiration to the students present. Following Miss Vasquez, was the keynote speaker, Councilor Ruben Gonzalez, who challenged the students to be a better Belizean and to further promote their patriotism and love for their country with their friends, family and visitors.

After Councilor Ruben's remarks, Officer Gabourel presented some awards to some teachers and students for promoting patriotism in their schools.

President of the Children's Advisory Body, CAB, also had a few remarks on the progress UNICEF and the CAB are working together and the success of their projects. Making the closing remarks were students of the Island Academy, where they thanked everyone for assisting and making this yet another successful event.
