Coming Soon: New Exhibition at San Pedro House of Culture

The exhibition entitled “Celebrating the Heritage of Maya Resistance” tells the story of 400 years of Maya resistance to foreign attacks on their culture, lands, and beliefs. When the Spaniards conquered the Yucatan, the Maya fiercely resisted being dominated. In 1847 the Caste War broke out and lasted over 50 years, wiping out close to a third of the population. The Caste War was the largest and most successful of a series of Maya rebellions against oppressive economic, political, and social systems imposed by the Spanish and perpetuated after Mexican independence.
