San Pedro counts down to Christmas with tree lighting ceremony

Tis’ the season to be jolly and to kick off the holidays, the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) hosted their annual ‘Lighting of the Christmas Tree’ ceremony on Sunday, November 27th. Hundreds of island families and visitors crowded the Central Park to witness the ceremony, which took place shortly after 7PM.

Miss San Pedro 2016-2017, Marisha Thompson, was the hostess of the night, welcoming everyone to the celebration that was lined up with a string of cheerful performances. An all-girl group of students from La Isla Bonita opened the ceremony with a merry dance. The San Pedro Dance Academy then took the floor, entertaining the crowd with two dance performances. Moments before the tree lighting, students from Ambergris Caye Elementary School continued the entertainment performing a hip-hop skit.

Mayor Guerrero then led the countdown that set aglow thousands of colorful sparkling lights on the Christmas tree, as people in attendance cheered and began capturing the dazzling moments. While everyone enjoyed the Christmas tree, students of Holy Cross Anglican School performed a musical act, and sung a Christmas carol.

To end the celebration, the Pandemonium Steel Band from Belize City performed harmonious instrumental Christmas songs and contemporary reggae and pop music. In addition, the SPTC treated children with cupcakes and refreshments.

Annual San Pedro Lions Children’s Christmas party brings the treats!

Packed with lots of presents, goodies, food, drinks, and even Santa Claus, the annual Children’s Christmas Party courtesy of the San Pedro Lions Club was held on Sunday, December 18th. Over 100 children participated in the fun festivity held at the San Pedro Lions’ Den.

Many children eagerly awaited a special invited guest, who they were told, was on his way from the North Pole. Minutes later, they all jumped in excitement as Santa casually strolled into the Den. He greeted everyone and began handing out candy before taking his place onstage surrounded by a mountain of gifts. One by one, each child was called by name for a quick sit on Santa’s lap. After posing for a picture, they received a gift from the jolly bearded man dressed in red.

After getting a present from Santa, each child was given a goody bag. Most of the children did not wait until they reached home to open their presents, digging in to see if they got their hearts’ desire!

ACES’ festive Christmas program brings in the holiday spirit

Ambergris Caye Elementary School (ACES) hosted their annual Christmas program on Thursday, December 15th. Held at the school grounds, the event was attended by families, friends and invited guests to witness the talent of the student body, while revealing in the Christmas spirit.

Teachers Mandy and Rangel did the honors of welcoming the audience to the show, thanking them for all of the support that makes these events successful.

ACES preschool toddlers first took the stage, presenting a dance to “I am the happiest Christmas tree”. After a big round of applause for their efforts, Infant One danced to “Santa Claus is coming to Town”, while Infant Two danced to “Burrito Sabanero.”

The Standard One continued the show with their special song, “The Hat I got for Christmas is too Big”. The next three segments came from Standard Two, Three, and Four classes dancing to Christmas carols: “Christmas Clap Rap”, “Deck the Halls”, and “All I want for Christmas is You”.

Join in this beautiful candlelight procession as we accompany Mary and Joseph in their quest for lodging in Bethlehem. Praying and singing traditional posada songs, we will culminate our journey with a feast at the San Pedro House of Culture. A wonderful family outing, and a great way to prepare for Christmas. Hope to see you there!

Another spectacular Caribbean Christmas Colors Contest

For the eleventh year, The San Pedro Sun staff toured across San Pedro Town judging colorfully lit houses for their annual Caribbean Christmas Colors Contest. The competition is held to recognize residents who decorate their houses in the spirit of Christmas, and Caribbean Christmas Colors is intended to give back to a community that promotes holiday joy.

With brightly lit homes adorned with festive ornaments and twinkling lights, San Pedro residents certainly seemed to be feeling the holidays. On Friday, December 16th, judges secretly drove around looking for those holiday homes. As far as three miles north of Sir Barry Bowen Bridge all the way to the DFC Area, there were lights to be seen, some in obscure locations, while others proudly shone like beacons.

After a fun tour, deserving homes were awarded based on categories. Fabulous prizes were given to: Best Overall, Best Theme, Most Creative, Jan Jensen Memorial, North Star, Honorable Mention, Mrs. Claus’s Choice, Best Business, Reason for the Season, and Santa’s Special Pick.

Prime Minister's Christmas Message

Prime Minister of Belize, Right Honorable Dean Oliver Barrow delivers his annual Christmas Message to the people.

“This year, I have been made especially conscious of the hope and blessings that Christmas represents. The continuing miracle of Jesus’s birth, put on this Earth by God expressly to save us is renewed for everyone at this time. The nativity is the source of our faith and of our belief that God, in Christ, is our guardian, our refuge and our strength through good times and though bad. It is also the fount of our obligation to be our sister’s keeper and our brother’s keeper. While that Christian duty is an all year one, we practice it with a particular ardency during this season. Let us therefore, once again, dedicated our Christmas prayers and good will and love to all our fellow Belizeans, to family, friends and neighbors, but also those less fortunate among us, the sick, the poor and the troubled, those afflicted in mind, body or soul. That is how in some small measure, we begin to repay our depth to God and honor the true meaning and spirit of Christmas. Peace and joy to all and very best wishes for the New Year. Feliz Navidad y uno prospero Año Nuevo. And merry Christmas to all the children.”
