Dear Forum members,
I am a retired high school teacher, 63 and in good health, who is interested in teaching part-time at San Pedro HS for the 2017-2018 school year. I am certified in English, speech, and theatre. My husband is a retired engineer who has been a mentor for high school FIRST robotics teams. He is 64 and also in good health. We have a retirement income, after mortgage and taxes, of $3K per month. I am proficient in spoken Spanish and fluent in French.
I plan to email the principal with my resume. But I wanted to know if anyone else in this forum teaches at the high school. We have been to Belize City and the Belize interior-- twice.
My husband and I lived in St. Croix, USVI, from 1975-80, and know about navy showers, living with a cistern, eating local foods, and conserving electricity and living without a/c. I taught at St. Croix Central HS.
We plan to keep our house in the states, and my son will house sit for us a year. Then after a year we will make a decision.
If I get a position, I'd like to bring two of my cats with us.
What would it cost to rent a two bedroom apt? Any info. You could share would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Hello Debbie & Curtis... From what I understand it is possible for you to continue your passion for teaching....However, these jobs are not easy to come by and pay very little. Living on an island is challenging and it sounds like you might have plenty of experience with those challenges.....Therefore, if I were in your shoes I would start with the Minister of Education.....From what I have learned, you'll need his permission or some type of documentation from his department. Check out www.moe.gov.bz Wishing you the best..... The cats can be cleared by following a process through BAHA at www.baha.org.bz and finally housing prices change dramatically by location. Even on the island of Ambergris Caye where there could be a $1,000 per month difference between beach and inland rentals. Check in with Ana Lausen at www.ambergrisvacationrentals.com for long term rentals on the island...... Again wishing you all the best....

As a non-resident you need a work permit if you are going to work for an "employer". Employer has to apply and prove they cannot find a qualified Belizean to do the job. I cannot imagine that there are no qualified teachers already here. Further you would need to be in the Teachers Union if you worked in the government school and that union is currently involved in industrial action against GoB ..... I all sounds like a no-go situation to me.

I CAN imagine that you could perhaps get a " self employment permit" as a tutor. Maybe check with parents who are home-schooling?

The cats are easy. Hope this works for you.
