IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR EVERYONE WHO LOVES BELIZE - oil/gas drilling
Last night, January 9, 2017, there was a very important meeting at the Lion's Den in San Pedro Town. Who? I don't know the name of the group who headed up the meeting as they did not have microphones and the rain beat on the tin roof so badly that it was hard to hear.
WHAT IT WAS ABOUT was the governments continuing to do business with a company who wants to MAP THE FLOOR OF THE REEF. This in spite of the fact that the citizens have repeatedly stated that we want NO OIL/GAS DRILLING ON THE REEF.
The panel spent time explaining the history of these actions, however the audience wanted to talk about 'WHAT DO WE DO NOW." It took a long time to get to the point of designing a plan.
THE PLAN
1. A dive operator has talked to the water taxi service and we can charter two boats to take up to 100 people to the governments meeting in Belize City on January 18th.
a. Boat will leave Ambergris Caye at 5:00 PM - sharp and return after the meeting.
b. Price per person (round trip) will be $65.00
c. Cost - (depending on number of people paying) can be as low as $35.00 per person allowing the difference for scholarships to students and teachers, etc.
2. A person volunteered to organize a sign making committee
a. The art teacher at school will be asked to have the students hand paint signs.
b. The estimated cost of materials is $5.00 per sign
c. Many donations were made to buy the supplies
d. Sign painting party will be scheduled (possibly at the Lion's Den).
i. Public will be invited to participate.
ii. This will be videotaped and made public
iii. Hopefully other areas will do the same
3. T-shirts and bumper stickers are available to anyone signing up to participate.
a. Sign up and payment can be made at the office of Searious Adventures in Velma Willma Plaza or Premier dive shop near the southern gas station.
4. Media coverage
a. Everyone was urged to contact anyone they knew in order to get international coverage.
b. Two people will contact Reef Radio/TV and arrange air time.
c. People were encouraged to use social media to spread the message
1. THE MESSAGE . . . . NO GAS OR OIL EXPLORATION IN BELIZE!
My concern is that no one was named as overall coordinator. It is up to each one of us to do the foot work.
THERE IS VERY LITTLE TIME - GET READY - GET INVOLVED SAVE BELIZE
