A Child Predator is back on the streets of San Pedro Town after spending only 3 days in jail, according to the San Pedro Sun newspaper. 62 year-old Ernesto Caliz Sr., former supervisor at The San Pedro Town Council (SPTC), was charged with sexual assault on a 3-year-old child. However, he is out of jail after he was offered a bail of $5,000. Caliz had been remanded to the Belize Central Prison until his next adjournment on January 6, 2017, but his attorney managed to have Justice Adolph Lucas approve his bail application on Friday, December 9th.

Caliz has been ordered not to interfere with any of the prosecution witnesses, especially with the complainant or any members of her family. He is not to go near where she lives. The Judge was very clear that if he breaches any of these conditions, his bail will be revoked and he will be immediately sent back to the Belize Central Prison.

Caliz has since been dismissed from his job post at the SPTC.

Ernesto Caliz court trial for sexual assault adjourned

On Friday, January 6th, 62-year-old Ernesto Caliz, accused of sexually assaulting a toddler, faced his first court session at the San Pedro Magistrate Court. Caliz's case was briefly reviewed and then adjourned to Tuesday, January 31st when his court trial is expected to start.

According to San Pedro Police, before the case commences, Caliz will undergo a 'case management' process in which all required evidence will be first collected prior to beginning of the trial. According to the police, and due to the nature of the accusation, the matter could reach the Supreme Court.

Bail of only $5,000 for this offense? I am appalled.

Just like the head of the taxi association who raped the 12 y.o. at gun point. Never punished, was he? Still driving taxi?

Everyone is convicting these people from a newspaper headline or disagreeing with a verdict without hearing arguments or seeing evidence. Does anyone think the accusation is a little unbelievable and the article in the paper is a little shy of detail.

I can say for myself that I am not convicting anybody. If an accusation is sufficient to arrest and charge then bail should reflect the severity of the crime. $5,000 for child molestation sends a message that the charge is not so serious. Well, it is serious. Very.

Serious charge. Bail should be steep. More unfair will be him living in close proximity to his alleged victim and family.
