FISHING REPORT

Weeks of December 18 - December 24th, 2016

Weather Conditions: Good weather, with a couple days of clouds and a few showers Many people look at the forecasts in the US and see Thunderstorms and rain every day this is not what is happening on Ambergris Caye. We are usually much drier, some days we have a shower or two followed by full sun so don't rely on those forecasts!!

Winds: 5-15 mph out of East, North and Northeast alternating all week.

Air Temperature: 80 to 88 degrees with lows between 70and 76 degrees

Water Temperature: Temp: 80 F. degrees

Barometric Pressure: 1015-1021 mbar

Sunrise: 6:20 am Sunset: 5:22 pm

Moonphase: The last quarter moon was on December 13th

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Lots of bonefish for all who made the effort. Lots of first bonefish were landed this week with special kudos to the youngsters Elina and Noni. Zach was another special mention for his first bonefish ever! The largest fish of the week was 5 pounds and we had an 18-fish day on one boat.

PERMIT (Palometta): Joe got his coveted permit although Rikki's (his wife) was indeed a bit bigger! Banks, a teenager at the lodge, was very proud of his first permit. Fletcher also landed a permit and was awarded hi permit achievement pin on his last evening's ceremony.

TARPON (Sabalo): The tarpon fishing was good this week if your name was Brooks! 7 tarpon to the hand in one day - a bunch of others were jumped. They were all in one little area and there were a lot of them! This happens once in a blue moon; but I am happy it happened to him as he wanted a single tarpon with all his angling heart. Other tarpon anglers were successful as well. Mark started off the week with his tarpon, Meredith got a beauty, and Pete rounded out the week with his prized catch.

OTHER SPECIES: Barracudas, ladyfish, Snook, snappers, Jacks

GRAND SLAM: No such luck this week!

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONEFISH - Christmas Island Special size 8\, Crazy Charlie, Small gotchas

FOR PERMIT - CI Special, Avalon, Camo Crab

FOR TARPON - Green toad, Cockroach, Blue and white deceiver

This Week's Summary:

The Christmas season is here - the lodge is full with lots of families taking advantage of the warm weather and great fishing! Merry Christmas!

FISHING REPORT

Weeks of January 1st - 7th, 2017

Weather Conditions: Mostly fair weather all week with a mix of clouds and sun.

Winds: Early in the week we had moderate winds from the east 5-15 mph, later in the week it turned north and got a little nasty with 20 mph gusts.

Air Temperature: Highs were in the low 80's, lows were in the mid to low 70's.

Water Temperature: Temp: 80 F. degrees

Barometric Pressure: 1011-1021 mbar

Sunrise: 6:25 am Sunset: 5:45 pm

Moonphase: The first quarter moon was on January 5th

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): A nice quiet week at the lodge with just 1-4 boats going out daily. Our bonefish did not disappoint, and their cooperation was greatly appreciated by all of those who went out this week. Many first ever bonefish, with the biggest coming in at a full 5 pounds; and some good days with up to 10 bonefish a day. Congratulations to all who succeeded this week!

PERMIT (Palometta): Lots of permit, especially considering the few people who went permit fishing. Returning guest and friend Adam (who runs a tarpon tagging expedition each year at El Pescador) got two permit on his first day out! Alec who is going to school in Montana spent part of his break hooked up to a permit and landed his first ever! Chuck was pleased about his, and Matt closed out the week with his first permit.

TARPON (Sabalo): The Tarpon were a little picky with some boats getting a dozen shots but not a single bite. Sergey came all the way from Russia for his first ever tarpon. My Nephew Chase had a good fish on and fought it to the boat just to lose it before anyone could touch the leader. I heard there was a little bit of hollering going on as the fish swam calmly away!

OTHER SPECIES: Jacks, Cudas, snappers and a couple of cobia.

GRAND SLAM: No slams this week.

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONEFISH - Christmas Island Special - lead eyes

FOR PERMIT - custom crab patterns, CI Special size 4, Gotcha

FOR TARPON - Black bunny, Olive Toad

This Week's Summary:

2017 started off easy with the Christmas rush in the rear-view mirror. The town had a fun fireworks display and the fish don't seem to care that it is 2017 - they are still challenging us as they did in 2016. I hope 2017 is another year or the first year that you come to visit El Pescador.

FISHING REPORT

Weeks of January 8th - 14th, 2017

Weather Conditions: Decent weather - partly cloudy with good sun late in the day most of the week.

Winds: 5-15 mph out of East, North, and Northeast, different every day.

Air Temperature: 80 to 86 degrees with lows between 70 and 78 degrees.

Water Temperature: Temp: 79 F. degrees

Barometric Pressure: 1017-1028 mbar

Sunrise: 6:26 am Sunset: 5:35 pm

Moonphase: The full moon was on January 12th

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): "Bonyfish" is how many of the older guides pronounce bonefish here on Ambergris, and it is pretty fitting. Having never eaten one I wouldn't know, but "boney" is what I hear. We have some of the largest schools of bonefish at times. One of those times was 2 days ago when one boat found a huge school of fish. Over 60 were hooked up, over 50 landed. No big bones this week with the largest reported at around 3 pounds.

PERMIT (Palometta): The permit King was Graham of Sport Fishing Television - he and his crew nailed five solid permit on their last day fishing - We will let you know when it airs! Our Montana couple (Al and Mary) both landed permit one day and Mary's ended up being part of her slam.

TARPON (Sabalo): Only a couple tarpon this week with Mary again at the head of the pack and our Russian friend Sergey right behind her. One group found a good concentration of adult fish in the 100-pound range in crystal clear water. Apparently, the excitement level was so high on the boat that everyone forgot how to cast. I don't know what it is about casting to a 100-pound tarpon 60 feet away that turns grown men into to incoherent mush with a tangle of line wrapped around them, while the tarpon swims peacefully by on their way to the next flat. Many of us live for this kind of experience.

OTHER SPECIES: Barracudas, ladyfish, snook, snappers, grouper.

GRAND SLAM: We are still Celebrating Mary's grand slam - she claims she could not have done it without the step by step help and instruction of her husband Al and their guide Gordy. She was beaming all week!

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONEFISH - Christmas Island Special, Crazy Charlies, Gotcha

FOR PERMIT - CI Special, Avalon

FOR TARPON - Green Toad, Cockroach, White Toad

This Week's Summary:

Sport Fishing Television was here for an upcoming episode. It was fantastic to be selected as one of their destinations this season. It paid off, as they had one hell of a permit fishing experience the last day! The wind made for tough fishing, but they persevered to victory.

FISHING REPORT

Weeks of January 15th, - January 21st, 2017

Weather Conditions: Partly cloudy to clear most of the week, a little bit chilly as a cold front arrived.

Winds: 10-20 mph out of East, North and Northeast, different every day.

Air Temperature: 80 to 86 degrees with lows between 70 and 78 degrees.

Water Temperature: Temp: 79 F. degrees

Barometric Pressure: 1007-1017 mbar

Sunrise: 6:23 am Sunset: 5:39 pm

Moonphase: The last quarter moon was on January 19th.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Bone fish remained very cooperative despite the windy weather. With just a few boats going out each day the reports were consistent find a mud (a group of feeding bonefish in deeper water) and you can catch 20, or stalk the shallows and catch just a few. Many of the guests that went out were first time flats fishers and they all succeeded with multiple bonefish. We are located far enough south that chilly weather from the north never shuts down the flats, making us a year-round fishery especially when compared to Florida, Cuba or the Bahamas.

PERMIT (Palometta): Permit fishing is addicting to many poor souls that come across their paths, Jeremy came all the way from the UK to feed his addiction and to try to feed a permit. Each day he was closer and closer to his goal (repeating his success of 2015, which was legendary.) On the next to last day of the trip, the permit switch turned on and they started to eat. He hooked 7 and landed 4 that day. His wife Ann was even more relieved than Jeremy because this success means they will be back next year.

TARPON (Sabalo): Several encounters with tarpon a couple of hookups but none came to the boat. The winds kept the anglers off fabled Savanah flats

OTHER SPECIES: Some big snook, barracudas, ladyfish, snappers, and grouper.

GRAND SLAM: No Grand Slams this week.

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONEFISH - Christmas Island Specials

FOR PERMIT - CI Special, Avalon

FOR TARPON - White Toad

This Week's Summary:

A very light week here at the lodge with only a boat or 2 going out each day.

Air Temperature: 80 to 84 degrees with lows between 70 and 74 degrees

Water Temperature: Temp: 79 F. degrees

Moonphase: The last quarter was on the 18th.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): A windy week, some days blowing close to twenty knots. Our anglers were challenged but came through with plenty of fish caught. Allan and Cindy, Muto (our friend from Japan), Kash, Kim, Conner, Rick, Michael, and Reggie all landed their share of hungry bonefish.

PERMIT (Palometta): As usual the permit were more challenging, but Allan, Muto, Reggie and Michael all managed to get some to the boat. Good going guys!

TARPON (Sabalo): Allan was on fire this week, and the fish liked most of what he threw at them, especially a rather large tarpon weighing in at around 80lbs.

OTHER SPECIES: Snook, barracuda, jack and loads of snapper

GRAND SLAM: None this week.

FISHING REPORT

Weeks of Feb 20th - Feb 26th, 2017

Weather Conditions: Clear and beautiful most of the week, primarily light winds.

Winds: 10-15 mph out of the East with a few west winds as well.

Air Temperature: 80 to 86 degrees with lows between 70 and 78 degrees

Water Temperature: Temp: 79 F. degrees

Sunrise: 6:12 am Sunset: 5:58 pm

Moonphase: The last quarter moon on 18th.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Lots of happy anglers this week. The mornings started very calmly with some of the best sunrises of the season. Bonefish were caught by almost everyone, beginners and seasoned anglers alike. We welcomed back a lot of friends and enjoyed getting to know all the newcomers. Rob, Michael, Randy, Byron, Betty, Brian, Matt, Ben, Alex, David, Jay, Jim, Don, and the girls from Orvis all brought bunches of bonefish to the boat. Another great week!

PERMIT (Palometta): The permit were hungry, and even first timers landed a few. Randy, Matt, Ben, Alex, Michael, Lisa, Bob, and David made it look easy catching a few. Catching a permit has been compared to a hole-in-one in golf. Sometimes the harder you try, the harder it gets. The anglers that haven't fished for permit very long are sometimes the most successful. Bob with really nice permit. Capt Emir throws thumbs up.

TARPON (Sabalo): Quite a few Tarpon were spotted this week, but the anglers could only get a few to eat. Mary showed her husband how to do it and caught a nice one. Jim, Michael, and Ben also landed a big one. Nothing better than those Tarpon days!

OTHER SPECIES: Snook, barracuda, jack and loads of snapper

GRAND SLAM: Congratulations to Michael on his GRAND SLAM!

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONEFISH - Christmas Island Specials

FOR PERMIT - Love those crab (mostly olive) and shrimp patterns.

FOR TARPON - White, black/purple and red/black are always great colors.

FISHING REPORT

Weeks of Feb. 27 thru Mar. 5, 2017

Weather Conditions: Clear and beautiful most of the week with a few strong thunderstorms.

Winds: 15-20 mph out of the ENE with some gusty winds.

Air Temperature: 78 to 83 degrees with lows between 70 and 75 degrees

Water Temperature: Temp: 79 F. degrees

Sunrise: 6:08 am Sunset: 5:59 pm

Moonphase: New Moon.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Lots and lots of bonefish landed this week. The Bonefish Bonanza hosted by Orvis was just that, and the entire group caught fish. A host of other guests also landed plenty of bonefish. Brenda landed a nice bonefish on her way to a grand slam! What a great week of fishing regardless of the gusty winds.

PERMIT (Palometta): Rowland, who was part of the Orvis Bonanza, landed a nice "first permit" along with Jerry and Louis. The permit were around this week but weren't as hungry as usual due to the unsettling weather. Steve and Brenda took advantage of the calm before the storm, and both landed nice ones.

TARPON (Sabalo): Brenda, Ben, Chrissy and Louis all got an early start and headed south to take advantage of the early rollers. Ben and Chrissy made it happen quickly and landed some nice tarpon before most of us had breakfast. Leaving the dock early really paid off!

OTHER SPECIES: Snook, barracuda, ladyfish, houndfish and snapper.

GRAND SLAM: Congratulations to Brenda on her Grand Slam!

FISHING REPORT

Weeks of March 6 - 12, 2017

Winds: 15-20 mph out of the ENE with some gusty winds.

Air Temperature: 78 to 83 degrees with lows between 70 and 75 degrees

Water Temperature: Temp: 79 F. degrees

Sunrise: 6:04 am Sunset: 6:02 pm

Moonphase: Second quarter.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): So many bonefish were caught this week it was hard to keep count. Lots of beginners managing to catch bonefish like the pros. As many as thirty bonefish a day were landed by some. Roger, Fred, Tom, Katie, Larry, Shelly, Johanne, Louis, Ben, Penelope, Lucas and a host of others had an awesome week of fishing.

PERMIT (Palometta): The permit were crazy as usual and proved difficult to land but, Louis, Jerry, Tom and Katie all got it done. Between the windy conditions and a few cloudy days, permit were a bit unsettled. That's permit fishing for ya!

TARPON (Sabalo): The tarpon were much more cooperative than the permit this week. Tom and Louis managed to land some forty to sixty pounders. We have had an increasing number of tarpon as their migration time nears. During April thru August the big boys start showing their faces with some of them reaching over 200lbs. Come and join us for the fight!

OTHER SPECIES: Grouper, snapper, barracuda and some more hound/needle fish.

GRAND SLAM: No grand slams this week.
