Time flies when you are busy…and having fun. It’s already JUNE. And that means Lobster season in Belize AND Lobster Festivals along the coast. Placencia, Caye Caulker and…AMBERGRIS CAYE!
The San Pedro Lobsterfestival was first celebrated in 2007. My friends and I had a cupcake stand – forgot to bring any lighting – and had to sleep for 48 hours as soon as it was over. Here was our unlit banner.
We are now on festival #11 and it’s shaping up to be a great one.

The opening of the lobster season is just around the corner, and with it comes the annual San Pedro Lobster Fest Extravaganza. Activities begin on Thursday, June 15th, and will culminate with a grand block party on Saturday, June 24th at Central Park. With just a few days left before the festivities, organizers are busy at work, making final touches for this year’s much anticipated 2017 Lobster Fest.
One of the most popular activities is the Lobster Crawl, in which crawlers are invited to visit the participating establishments and get their Lobster Fest Passport stamped. This year’s Lobster Crawl will open at the El Divino Restaurant at Banana Beach Resort on Thursday, June 15th at 3PM with the live performance of Cuban group Morena Son. The celebration will continue on Friday, June 16th during the day at Wahoo’s Lounge, while Pirate’s Treasure Restaurant and Bar will host the evening. There are similar activities hosted by different businesses June 20-23.
The festival will then end with a huge block party at the Central Park on Saturday, June 24th.
The block party starts at 6PM, and will feature booths providing a variety of lobster dishes and refreshing cocktails throughout the evening. There will also be musical entertainment from the Pannerifix Steel Band, among other local artists.

On Wednesday, June 14, 2017, the all female Cuban band from Santiago, Cuba , Morena Son, performed in front of the San Pedro House of Culture as part of their tour throughout Belize.
They performed various songs, from salsa to bachata, and even a favorite of the late Celia Cruz, who was originally from Cuba.
It was a spectacular event! The members of the band interacted with the audience and had them on their feet doing various Cuban dances like the Cha Cha. Amongst the audience, there were a few Cubans now residing in Belize who were delighted with the music and dancing - very well known Dr. Lerida Rodriguez, Mrs. Barbara Brown and Dr. Nidia Larrinaga from the Dr. Otto Rodriguez Polyclinc II.
The San Pedro Town Council would like to thank Morena Son for delighting everyone with their vocal talent, music and culture, and sharing it with all of Belize.

NICH and San Pedro House of Culture keep traditions alive during Lobster Fest
The National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) through The Museum Of Belize and The San Pedro House of Culture invites everyone to take part in the rich traditions of San Pedro during the month of June. For the next two (2) weeks San Pedro will be a fountain of traditional and contemporary cultural activities celebrating the sacrifice of the fishermen, the bounty of the sea, the sanctity of religion, the sense of family and the all-encompassing spirit of San Pedro.
The traditional aspect of this year’s festivities will begin on June 20. The villagers will be roused from sleep to attend La Bajada at the Roman Catholic Church, a ceremony that is centered around the fishermen removing the statue of St. Peter from its usual place in the church and placing it at the bottom level of his altar. Songs and prayers will then be offered in honor of St. Peter. Following the service, participants will go outside to the beachfront for the NICH sponsored traditional fisherman’s breakfast and live mariachi music. This event also signals the beginning of the novena for St. Peter until the 28th of June.
Amid the island’s several community-based events and the feasting and celebration of the Annual Lobster Fest, The San Pedro House of Culture will be hosting a One Day photographic exhibit at the Saturday night block party from 5 PM until 12 midnight on Saturday, the 24th of June. The theme for this popular annual exhibit is “The History of the Lobster Industry in San Pedro”.
The last installment of traditional merriment before the “Dia de San Pedro” happens on the final night of the novena, the 28th of June, which is also the eve of the Feast of St. Peter is “La Alborada” an evening of Cultural Dances at the statue of St. Peter at the Catholic Church. This year will see performances by dance groups based in San Pedro and the Palmar Dance Group of Orange Walk.
NICH through the San Pedro House of Culture takes this opportunity to thank the Island of San Pedro for once again including us in its annual celebrations leading up to the Feast Day of St. Peter and the merriment of the Lobster Fest.
2017 San Pedro Lobsterfest – Great Food and Music & Eating My Body Weight in Lobster
Last night was the culmination of the 2017 San Pedro Lobster Festival – the zenith of 11 years of festivals that we’ve held on this island to celebrate the opening of lobster season in Belize. And I was asked to be a judge of all the lobster dishes submitted by the 19 different restaurant booths.
Along with representatives from the Belize Tourism Board, the San Pedro Town Council and various blogs and publications, fresh-faced and excited to eat and drink. 2 hours later, it was a different story – fresh faced no more – but with all the music and dancing and the fabulous atmosphere, it was a burden worth bearing.
I arrived at 5pm and things were already hopping. The House of Culture had a really cool display of the industry in San Pedro. In the 1920s, fishermen sold their catch to canneries for 1 cent a pound. ONE CENT. It’s not inflation either. .01 in 1925 = .14 today.
Ramon’s Village and their Pineapple Restaurant went all out…they won best booth!

Steel drums and lots and lots and lots of food as the night gets started...
A big thank you to all of the hard working businesses that put so much love and enthusiasm into their booths last night! Each year we are amazed by the creativity and dedication all of you give to make this event such a success! Thank you!

Finn & Martini And El Jefe Shine At San Pedro Lobsterfest
After only a week from the opening of the lobster season, restaurants from around the island gathered at Central Park to showcase their best lobster dish and best drink.
With no time to waste, and as the crowd got bigger, judges made their way from booth to booth to sample all the decadent lobster servings. Pleasing the judges pallets the most, Finn & Martini along with El Jefe were awarded with Best Lobster dish and Best Drink of the evening.

Finn + Martini wins big at San Pedro Lobster Festival The 2017 Lobster Season officially opened on Thursday, June 15th, bringing back the Caribbean Spiny crustacean to the restaurants’ menus on the island. The opening of the season marks the occasion for the anticipated Annual Lobster Fest which sees a week-long Lobster Crawl. Persons participating in the crawl this year were encouraged to get their Lobster Fest Passport stamped at the participating establishments, for a chance to win the ultimate vacation package for two to the 2018 Lobster Fest. The 2017 Lobster Crawl wrapped up on Friday, June 23rd with a day event over the water at the Palapa Bar and Grill. The lobster party coincided with their 10th anniversary and included live music, lobster beads, free Jell-o shoots and lots of food and drinks specials. The last event of the week-long lobster Crawl took place at The Truck Stop north of the island on Friday night. To make the party a real fun one, there was a special San Pedro version of The Price is Right, hosted by Joe Chung. The show was based on the all the island local grocery stores and their unpredictable prices. The event also included lobster specials throughout the evening.
The Most Fun I Ever Had Not Winning “The Most Fun I Ever Had Not Winning” turned out to be my vacationing friend John McHenry’s tag line of the night.
He was in town speaking on behalf of the board for Holy Cross School graduation and wanted to get together. I had declined his Friday night offer to meet for a drink after dinner as I was enjoying some quality me time and I was also saving myself for Saturday night on the town and the big lobster festival street party.
When I mentioned the block party as an alternate plan I was surprised to find out that John did not know about it. By his response I could tell that he thought it was a small local neighborhood thing.
He soon found out otherwise when we walked from our meeting place out front of Fido’s to the very packed Central Park area. After several years of attending San Pedro Lobster Fest, it was fun to see the party through the eyes of someone who unexpectedly ended up there. Surprisingly in all the years John has been coming here he has never celebrated the opening of lobster season in Belize.
