The US embassy website has a ton of info. Crime tends to be related to drugs and affects expats rarely.

Yes the health care is constantly improving. I have had pneumonia here twice. In the USA I would have been hospitalized because insurance pays big money for that. Here, the first time the doctor came to my condo, after that the nurse checked on me each day.
I can't remember the exact cost but it was so little I didn't even bill my ins.
The second time the doctor treated me in her office. She is Cuban and a specialist in tropical diseases. Including meds it cost me $90 BZE
I do go back to California for surgeries.
I get to skip this yeaas nothing needs removed. LOL

I read immigration officers may at their discretion deny your permit extension after 6 months. Does this apply to your case? Or once you start your residency application they are obliged to renew your permit if you request it?

Thanks.

I went to the Immigration Office yesterday to get another extension of my Visa and was told he wouldn't renew it without the Land documents that prove I own property here. It seems the rules are changing.

The rules are not changing, simply being enforced more scrupulously. You'll find that the rules in Belize for immigration and visa stamps are no different than those in many countries. The view is if you are here long term then you must either have a connection to Belize, prove your income or retirement. Most countries require tourists to leave the country periodically to renew their tourist visa to discourage people who are working illegally from being stamped as tourists.
