We have been QRP members since 2008. We renewed our status in November and reentered the country on Dec 30th. The immigration officer at International Airport said we could only get a 30 day stamp even though we had our receipt showing we had paid the annual fee. The BTB office said we had to go to immigration to have our passports stamped every month until they have our QRP cards printed through the Immigration Department. This morning we had to pay $100 each to have our visa extended for a month! In the past we were able to use the old card with the receipt until the new cards were printed.

If the people in the government of Belize could just bring themselves to act in the country's enlightened best interest instead of parochial greed the whole place would be immensely benefited. You see example after example of little fiefdoms being used to enrich certain people and certain political parties - depending on which party is in power. It really is a terrible shame and it is the major barrier to the development of Belize economically and otherwise.

I don't see any updates on this, Bluebird was your QRP sorted out? I'm interested in this program and found this forum as a result. Interested to hear what happened. Best of luck!

I called BTB in Belize City today. The woman I spoke with said the Immigration Dept is causing the problem and BTB doesn't know when the cards will be printed.

Hope that gets sorted out soon. Overall, do you feel like the QRP has been beneficial and worked out? We're still a few years off but have been reading up about the program and very keen on doing it. thanks!

Given the issues currently facing the ID, I would not hold my breath on a resolution any time soon.

The benefits of the program may look different to you over time, so suggest you continue to monitor conditions and decide at the time of your move. With banking regulations the way they are today it is hard to open a local bank account if you don't have a certain status. QRP gets you over that hurdle, which is pretty nice. Vehicles (including airplanes) can come into the country duty free.... Big savings. On the other hand you may want to work or volunteer in your former profession, and under QRP you cannot do that.

If you go QRP I urge you to buy & used a golf cart and bring it with your belongings. You will save a ton of money.

We were told that if we brought in a boat or golf cart and sold It later, the duty would have to be paid at that time. Overall we are glad to be in the QRP program but this latest snafu with no updated card is maddening.
