Hello! I will be visiting my friends house near San Pedro in June. I would like to hire a fly fishing guide to go tarpon fishing. Can anyone recommend a good guide in the area? I don't want to rely on the ones that advertise online that cater to tourist traffic (unless they are recommended). Ive heard that George Bradley is a good guide, is he still around? Thanks for any recommendations!

There are many really skilled fly fishing guides here - they all cater to the tourist trade. You should be sure to hire a guide who has a tour guide license and has a good reputation. Enjoy.

Thanks! I didn't know if I should rely on the ones advertising online. I was hoping someone can share some names of a few guides in the area. I just don't want to be treated like "another tourist" who will be happy with just a boat ride to the popular fishing grounds. But if the local fly shop guides are reputable I don't mind looking into that. Thanks again!

What other kind of fishing guide would there be if not pointed towards guiding tourists? You are aware it is a tourist based economy, correct?

Maybe that came across wrong....I do realize that a majority of the folks who hire guides are tourists, but I have met some guides that take advantage of tourists. For example, they may have a beautiful website with lots of pictures of fish, really nice gear and a really nice boat, and use this to "lure in" customers. Then the tourist shows up and the guide doesn't really care if they catch fish or not, the boat and gear may not be good, and they only take them to nearby fishing areas whether there's fish in the area or not. They do this because they know there will be 100's of other paying tourists and they don't need to rely on their reputation very much. Usually these types of guides are only able to survive in an area with lots of tourism. Make sense? There's probably not any guides like this in the San Pedro area, but it doesn't hurt to ask right?
