A little heads-up about a couple of ATM's in town.
The Belize Bank ATM at Richie's Store has a new card reader. Now you have to insert the card, wait a few seconds and then remove it before you can proceed to make a transaction. The screen on this machine offers no prompts nor instructions, and the management staff in the store speak neither Spanish nor English so no help there.
The ATM at Belize Bank itself has gone quirky too. I tried to withdraw $500 and got the message that the machine was unable to dispense this sum. I tried several lesser amounts and got the same message. The BelizeBank customer service manager told me that the machine was probably out of 50's and if I put in a sum that could be paid in 20's it would work. I had to remind the manager that 500 = 25 twenty dollar bills. She said try 460. I tried 460, 320, 180. ..... No joy. I was then told I could stand in a very long line to get money from the teller but it would cost me $10 for the counter transaction. I protested and the fee was waived. Seeing the long line I went back to Richie's ( armed with the information on removing the card, which BB customer service had shared with me) and got some funds.
Hopefully this information will help you avoid a few frustrations.
Things are usually a lot easier than this ...... Hopefully the change up in technology will not cause too many more difficulties.
