Woman stabbed in Caye Caulker during early hours
During the early hours of Saturday, April 8th, 20 year old Meghan Holland sustained a stab wound to the chest in Caye Caulker.
According to the official police report, while Caye Caulker Police were patrolling on Luciano Reyes Street at 2AM, they received information that a fight was occurring in front of the Police Barracks.
When they arrived, they saw Holland making a lot of commotion. She indicated to the Police that she’d had a misunderstanding with one of her cousins.
The officers advised her to make a report at the Caye Caulker Police Station, but she refused, and went home.
However, a few minutes later, police received information that Holland had collapsed at her home. She was then rushed to the Caye Caulker Health Clinic, where police, along with medical authorities, observed a stab wound to her chest.
Passport Services resume after technical difficulties
The Department of Immigration and Nationality Services issued a press release on Friday, April 7th, informing the general public that the Department will resume normal processing of applications for renewal and issuance of new passports on Monday, April 10th. This announcement came more than a month after the Government of Belize (GOB) advised the public that the Passport Office in Belmopan was experiencing technical difficulties with the passport printing process.
Tamanduas losing habitat due to major development
The daylight sighting of a Tamandua (anteater) has led concerned residents to claim that the increase in major development on Ambergris Caye is adversely affecting its flora and fauna. The nocturnal animal was reportedly spotted during early evening hours, and the witness fears that it could be captured for a pet, or worse, become injured by humans/dogs.
The San Pedro Sun spoke to Ella Baron, wildlife specialist at the Tamandua Refuge in the Cayo District. She also believes that major development in San Pedro is causing tamanduas to resort to unnatural habitats. “Unfortunately, development is causing these animals to become dislocated. The anteaters live on high trees, and because of the large building developments, tamanduas’ natural habitats are disappearing. I believe that such massive and rapid construction is causing a lot of wildlife to [have to] get closer to humans. They get displaced, and disoriented. As a result, they can be attacked by humans, dogs or get hit by cars,” said Baron.
While other animals would run away from danger, tamanduas try to protect themselves by standing up on their hind legs, using their tail as a support and holding their claws in a defensive position. They do not have teeth, and their defense mechanism can lead them to trouble. Tamandua/human conflict usually arises when people misinterpret the animal’s defensive behavior. Common reactions are getting scared and lashing out at them in fear.

Best Places to Live: Ambergris Caye, Belize
Lying just south of Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula, Belize is an expat’s dream destination: The Belizean dollar is pegged to the US dollar, the local language is English, and there’s a well-established expat population, which makes for an easy transition. For the ultimate Belizean escape, Ambergis Caye, its 25-mile-long, slender offshore island, has a new vibrance at the southern end with the development of Mahogany Bay Village, a new-urbanism-inspired community that also offers hotel stays in its whitewashed, elegant cottages, and a cluster of some of the best food and drink on the island.
Several of Ambergis Caye’s finest stretches lie along the island’s southern shore, fronted by resorts including Ramon's Village and The Villas at Banyan Bay (all beaches are public, so just roll up and enjoy the view).
A gap in Ambergris Caye’s protective reef gives the Hol Chan (“little channel”) Marine Reserve its name; this natural anomaly provides a protected habitat for live corals and fish and is a popular dive spot. Elsewhere in the underwater park you’ll find a seagrass-filled lagoon, thick coastal mangrove forests, and Shark Ray Alley, where snorkelers can swim with southern stingrays and nurse sharks.
And when it’s time to leave the beach, Ambergris Caye’s town center of San Pedro is a buzzy, funky hangout with outdoor bars and restaurants.
