Tiger Sharks win first NEBL semifinal against Western Ballaz

The San Pedro Tiger Sharks continue to dominate as the number one seed in the 2017 National Elite Basketball League (NEBL) tournament. After the first round of semi-finals, the Tiger Sharks and the Belmopan Bandits emerged victorious this past weekend.

On Saturday, April 29th, the Tiger Sharks played a familiar opponent, the Cayo Western Ballaz, at the Angel Nuñez Auditorium. With the home court advantage, Tiger Sharks took the lead, leaving no room for the Western Ballaz to catch up. In the third quarter, the Tiger Sharks had a whopping 24-point lead. However, the Western Ballaz rallied, closing the gap in the final quarter with only a one-point deficit in the last 23 seconds. The Tiger Sharks fought for the win, and some free throws in the end allowed them to seal a tight 82-78 victory.

The second round of the semi-final games resumes on Thursday, May 4th at 8:30PM, where the Bandits (#3) will face the Dream Ballers (#2) at the University of Belize’s Gymnasium in Belmopan City. In addition, all the individual awards for the Pepsi NEBL 2017 season will be distributed during the half time game. On Friday, May 5th at 9PM, the Western Ballaz (#4) will take on the Tiger Sharks (#1) at Sacred Heart College Auditorium in San Ignacio Town.

NEBL’s semifinal Game 3 – Western Ballaz seeks to exorcise ghost of the past

Game three of the NEBL’s best-of-three semifinal round, scheduled to be played Sunday afternoon on the island of San Pedro between the favored home-town San Pedro Tiger Sharks and the visiting Cayo Western Ballaz, is filled with intrigue, amazing storylines, and when all is said and done, should go down as one of the league’s best games of all time.

The intrigue – will the Western Ballaz finally exorcise a ghost of the past, and finally take down their ultimate nemesis – the Tiger Sharks; a team which historically has had their number, winning ten of fourteen games played between the two franchises since the inception of the NEBL; and a team which has essentially stood between them and that coveted championship, dealing them blows after blows of team disappointments? Or, will this be the year that the Western Ballaz finally cross that proverbial hump?

The storyline – Darwin “Puppy” Leslie seeks his fourth consecutive personal trip to the finals, with the hope of winning four such championships. Ironically, he won two of his previous three championships with the Tiger Sharks; and, undoubtedly, will be looking to take a bite out of the Sharks, or, better yet, bite the hands that once fed him. Another interesting storyline is the question of whether the league’s MVP, San Pedro’s George Williams’ injury will prevent him from suiting up, come Sunday afternoon. And, if he cannot go, how significant an impact will his not being on the court, have on his team’s performance? All this should play out on Sunday afternoon in prime time, and with the bland NBA playoff games currently ongoing, the NEBL should be the show on Sunday afternoon on TNC.

Getting inside the numbers though, the Sharks traditionally are tough at home; and if they have the services of George Williams, should be able to come out on top in this one. Williams totaled 20 points 5 assists in his team’s game one 82-78 victory, shooting an amazing 4 of 8 from the field, but more notably, hit 3 of 4 from long distance. He had excellent support from Raul Roches (19 pts 7 rebs) and Douglas Valley (15 pts). However, in game 2, with his absence, the Sharks noticeably struggled to find offensive rhythm. As a team, they have shot a respectable 44% from the field so far in the series, hitting on 49 of 111 shot attempts.

Their long distance game is evidently critical to their success, and this bares out, as they managed to hit 11 of 21 three-point attempts in their game 1 win; but in their game 2 loss, shot a miserable 4 of 18. In the series, they are averaging 72.5 points per game, up from their regular season output of 69.2 points per game. However, defensively they have regressed, giving up 76.5 points per game to the Ballaz. This is being led by Western Ballaz’ Darwin Leslie, who is having a simply big series, averaging 19 points per game, to go along with 5 rebounds per game, 5 steals per game and 2 assists per game, while shooting 45% from the field. What should be more worrisome, though, for the Sharks’ brain trust, is the fact that he is getting significant help from teammates, with 5 players scoring in double figures in game 1, and four in game 2. These include Gene Myvette, averaging 11 points per game in the series, Brandon Flowers 11.5 points per game, and Ray Cruz 12.5 points per game, to go along with 6 rebounds per game. The results – a team clicking on all cylinders offensively, scoring 76.5 points per game. Remarkably, the absence of Richard Troyer has not been felt so far, in light of the fact that they have been able to sustain their regular season offensive output of 72.5 points per game, while improving their defensive efficiency from 76.5 points allowed during the regular season, to now 72.5 in the playoffs.

San Pedro Tiger Sharks head to fourth straight Pepsi NEBL finals

The Pepsi NEBL semi-finals continued this past weekend, as a decisive game 3 was played today in San Pedro between Cayo Western Ballaz and San Pedro Tiger Sharks. The winner of this game would stamp their ticket to the finals, to face off with Belmopan Bandits. The home team, San Pedro Tiger Sharks was able to easily secure the 82–69 victory, as they took command of the game in the second quarter, and Cayo Western Ballaz was unable to cut the lead to single digits for the rest of the game.

With the win, 2-time NEBL champions, San Pedro Tiger Sharks are heading to their fourth straight NEBL finals, as they try to erase the bitter taste from their mouths, after last season’s disappointing ending. Belmopan Bandits, on the other hand, have been resting, and now have even more motivation to bring home both semi-professional championships to the capital city, since Belmopan Bandits football team were crowned PLB champs last night.

This is the fourth straight year that the top 2 teams in the regular season will face off in the NEBL finals.

Finals Schedule Saturday, May 20 at 9:00 p.m. – San Pedro Tiger Sharks (#1) vs Belmopan Bandits (#2) at San Pedro High School in San Pedro Town
Thursday, May 25 at 8:30 p.m. – Belmopan Bandits (#2) vs San Pedro Tiger Sharks (#1) at UB gymnasium in Belmopan City
Saturday, June 3 at 9:00 p.m. – San Pedro Tiger Sharks (#1) vs Belmopan Bandits (#2) at San Pedro High School in San Pedro Town (if necessary)

Tiger Sharks dominate, 82-69, in decisive game 3 to oust Western Ballaz

The San Pedro Tiger Sharks benefitted immensely from Raul Roches’ 10 first-quarter points, and consequently was able to jump out to the early 24-17 first-quarter lead in the third and decisive game of the NEBL’s semi-finals, played Sunday on the island of San Pedro. The Tiger Sharks would never look back, and would never surrender the lead, eventually winning by the score of 82-69, and in so doing, put an abrupt end to the Western Ballaz’ season.

If it sounds familiar, it’s because it is. The Sharks just seems to have the Ballaz’ number, and on Sunday afternoon it was no different. Even with the league’s MVP, George Williams ailing from a leg injury, the Ballaz were still unable to take advantage of this disparity, as they struggled enormously from the field, hitting just 11 of their first 35 field goal attempts, while committing 5 turnovers, which indisputably allowed their opponents to take the big 40-29 lead at the half. This lead would balloon to 56-36 close to the end of third-quarter play, which, for all intents and purposes, spelled the expiration of the Western Ballaz’ season.

The Tiger Sharks, although playing at home, had concerns going into the game, given the outcome of the last game, and the Ballaz apparently snatching momentum away from them. However, Tiger Shark George Williams proved why he was league MVP, playing 33-of-40 minutes, and scoring a game high 23 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field, while grabbing 3 rebounds. His teammate Raul Roches, who gave his team the burst of energy they needed, out of the gates, ended up with 20 points 10 rebounds 2 assists, followed by Douglas Valley and Jamal Kelly with 9 points each.

The Ballaz, on the other hand, who were relying heavily on numbers and their deep bench, could not find any rhythm, both from an offensive and defensive perspective. The formula that had worked so well in game 2 was absent, as they struggled to find points; as a matter of fact, their leading scorer on Sunday was Ray Cruz, and he could only muster 13 points 5 rebounds. Darwin Leslie was held in check with 10 points 3 rebounds, and Gene Myvett experienced a similar fate, totaling a mere 10 points 7 rebounds. Daniel Nolberto and Brandon Flowers scuffled in prime time, shooting a woeful 5-of-23 from the field combined.

With the win, the Tiger Sharks will now head to the 2017 NEBL finals to face the Belmopan Bandits.

Tiger Sharks; next win would seal the NEBL 2017 championship

The San Pedro Tiger Sharks are one step closer in becoming the 2017 National Elite Basketball League (NEBL) Champions, after defeating Belmopan Bandits in game one of a best-out-of-three game series. For the fourth consecutive year, the island team is seeking a championship, and with the first win in the 2017 NEBL finals, Game two is the most anticipated game of the season.

San Pedro Tiger Shark’s Ashton Edwards was very instrumental in their victory, netting 18 points on 50% shooting from the field, and scoring three long-distance nets. The season’s MVP George Williams brought another impressive performance, tallying 15 points, three assists and two steals. Raul ‘Thumpy’ Roches registered a double-double with 15 points and 10 re bounds, and Kurt ‘Chengo’ Burges recorded 11 rebounds.

For game two of the finals, the Tiger Sharks will travel to the UB Gymnasium in Belmopan City, on Thursday May 25th at 8:30PM, as the Belmopan Bandits will try to send this game back to San Pedro for a third match. If the Tiger Sharks manage to secure a second win, they will become the NEBL 2017 Champions.

Bandits still alive, following huge 81-73 win over Tiger Sharks

The number one-seeded Tiger Sharks will have to win a third and decisive game at home next week if they have any aspiration on winning their third NEBL championship in four years.

The home-town Belmopan Bandits engineered a huge fourth quarter run, to close out game two of their best-of-three NEBL championship series, winning by the final score of 81-73, and in so doing have sent this series back to San Pedro.

The Bandits, as anticipated, came out of the gate with a rush of adrenaline, scoring the first five points of the game, on a Stephen Williams long trey and an ensuing jump shot by Farron Louriano. However the Sharks was able to weather that first burst of Bandits energy, responding rapidly by outscoring the Bandits 34-to-26, to close out first half play with the slim lead, 34-31.

But with 13 of his game high 26 points coming in the fourth-quarter, and a series of inspired plays, Devin Daly gave the Bandits that much needed lift to separate themselves from the Sharks, and in so doing find victory. The Bandits had great contributions from Greg Rudon 14 points 6 rebounds 3 assists, and Farron Louriano 14 points 7 rebounds.

George Williams, as he has been doing all year, once again came up big, delivering critical blows to the Bandits, totaling 21 points, but which apparently was not enough, despite big games from Kurt Burgess 11 points 9 rebounds, Douglas Valley 13 points 6 rebounds, and Jamal Kelly 11 points 5 assists.

The game was nip and tuck all the way, with 4 ties and 4 lead changes, but the Bandits closed the game on a 23-17 run.

The Sharks, who were hoping to close this one out on the road, will now have to wait for next week, while the Bandits will obviously be looking for redemption – finally.

The Belmopan Bandits are the 2017 champions of the National Elite Basketball League, after defeating the San Pedro Tiger Sharks 75-67.

Belmopan Bandits triumph over San Pedro Tiger Sharks
The Pepsi National Elite Basketball League (NEBL) season closed on Saturday, June 3rd as the San Pedro Tiger Sharks hosted Belmopan Bandits in game three of the finals held in San Pedro Town. The game was played at the Angel Nuñez Auditorium, which was packed to capacity for the championship game. Despite having the home-court advantage, the Tiger Sharks were overcome by the Bandits, who claimed the NEBL 2017 Championship with a final score of 75-67. The fourth and last quarter was the most intense, and fans were on the edge of their seats. The lead changed several times, with the Tiger Sharks even nabbing a five point lead a few minutes before the final buzzer. However, the Belmopan Bandits quickly regained their composure, netting key shots, and getting crucial defensive stops. The Tiger Sharks were crippled, and even though they fought hard until the end, the Bandits stole a 75-67 victory. The win gave the Belmopan Bandits their first NEBL Championship in franchise history.
