Last week, News Five spoke one-on-one with Kaina Martinez, Olympian sprinter turned All-American at Texas A and M University-Kingsville. After completing her college track career with good performances in the 2017 NCAA Division Two Outdoor Athletics Championships, she told us that she wants to remain open-minded about what is in store for her. But she will not, she said, accept half-hearted attempts by the Belize Athletic Association to entice her to run for Belize again if they do not acknowledge and fix the spat that kept her off the 2016 Olympic team. Today, News Five received copies of a correspondence between Martinez and B.A.A. President Deon Sutherland issued on May twenty-fourth. Sutherland wrote, “This is the last time I’m trying to contact you to no avail. It is properly documented that I have tried four times now and has received no response. Thanks.” If the B.A.A. was seeking Kaina to run at any upcoming meet, that door was firmly shut by her response. She writes, “Thank you for informing me about your current need. However, based on how you personally handled my case during the “Rio Olympic games” and how you treated me at the Central American Championship which, I personally felt dishonored and disrespected, that I have decided not to compete for you again, or, anytime during your administrative tenure. My future participation will only be considered under different management and with acceptable terms and conditions. Hopefully in the near future, I will be able to represent my country again. The country that I truly love.” So is that it for Kaina? She told us this evening that in her view, the Association’s relationship with her has not changed, and so neither will her stance.
On the Phone: Kaina Martinez, Athlete
“He is contacting me back again after what he did last year, so I’m telling him whatever his meet is that I can’t do it, what his meet is, plain and simple; that’s what it says in the email. After what happened last year he did not contact me, and he starts contact [again]; his last message to me was like everything is final, nothing is going to change; then why is he contacting me again?”
