A seven-year-old girl has reportedly been abducted by her grandmother and is believed to have been taken from her hometown in San Pedro across the border to neighboring Guatemala.  Hamy Alena Reyes is a student of Ambergris Elementary School, who was over at her babysitter’s home in San Mateo over the weekend.  On Sunday morning, while the child was on her way to church with her babysitter’s daughter, she was reportedly approached by Maria Quischan, her maternal grandparent who informed the older girl that she was taking Hamy with her to Guatemala.  When the mother, thirty-two-year-old Hade Chacon showed up to pick up her daughter, she was told that the little girl was attending Sunday Mass.  When she did not come back several hours later, despite the babysitter’s daughter returning by midday, Chacon grew fearful and that’s when she learned that indeed Hamy had been kidnapped. A report with the Belize Police Department has been filed, but according to the babysitter, whom we spoke with by phone this evening, Chacon cannot afford to go looking for her daughter in Guatemala.

On the Phone: Margarita Chi, Babysitter

“I know her mom, right, she’s my friend.  She wanted to go out so she hired me to baby sit the girl overnight.  That was Saturday and she told me she was going to come pick her up on Sunday morning.  So I told her, “No problem.  If you come and I’m not here I’ll be in church, because I go to church in the morning.”  So Sunday morning I never went because I woke up with my ankle really swollen and I couldn’t walk to go to church.  So my daughter, she’s eight years old, she goes to church every Sunday, so she knows the little girl also, she comes to my house to play all the time.  So in the morning I had them take a shower, got them both ready to go to church and I told them after lunch, twelve o’clock when the church is over, my only son, Lionel Cornel, who is twenty-one years old went to pick them up because he always goes to the church also and that day he never went because he went fishing the day before and he was tired.  So eleven-fifty I was out on the veranda, her mom came to pick her up and I told her that in ten minutes they will be here.  So I saw my daughter coming and I asked her weh Hamy deh and she said that her grandma called her and said that she’ll take her to Guatemala.  So we just took it as fun right.  So I told her mom to check and she said in a minute I gwein.  So she sent back my daughter to tell the girl to come home.  So when I went there the little girl told my daughter that her grand mom had already taken the little girl to Guatemala but we still didn’t believe her.  So Ms. Hade, the little girl’s mom, I told her, why don’t you call her.  So Hade went over there and nobody was there.  So Hade came back and said I think they went to town…”

Isani Cayetano

“Do you know if Hade has gone to Guatemala to try to find her daughter and her mother?”

On the Phone: Margarita Chi

“No.  Because Hade noh have money to go.  She doesn’t have money so she can go.”

Isani Cayetano

“Now do you know if Hade and her mother had any issues before which would result in the mother taking this granddaughter?”

On the Phone: Margarita Chi

“I asked her and she said they never had any problem before so she noh know weh wrong with her mom.”

Maria Quixchan is presently residing in San Andres, Peten, Guatemala.
