Giant Cave stats: total surveyed line- 17,141 ft; max point of penetration 3,817; Chip- stoked!

Have you ever wondered what the Giant Caye Caulker Cave looks like?

There’s a giant cave under Caye Caulker

(DISCLAIMER: Do NOT try this on your own or with your buddy. These people are professionals with years of certification and training.)

The Giant Caye Caulker cave system in Belize is thought to be one of the largest cave systems in the world. The entrance is located only 50 yards or so from shore on the lagoon side of the island. The cave is thought to be one of the most extensive in the world, extending under the Split and Caye Caulker for large distances. The entire cave has not yet been explored, but it’s pretty extensive.

As you can see from this map compiled by the Belize Cave Diving Society, entire Caye Caulker neighborhoods sit atop the cave.

The video begins with divers in full gear entering the shallow waters on the lagoon side of the island.

They then move to the entrance of the cave system which is a tiny unnoticeable black hole located very close to shore.

The narrator then takes viewers on a visual tour of the cave which so many Hicaquenos have no idea sits underneath them.

We’ll let you watch the rest of the video and be amazed!

Not to be outdone, the Belize Cave Divers then tackle a second cave, this one located near Caye Chapel.

Caye Chapel’s Winter Wonderland

Caye Chapel’s cave system is known as “Winter Wonderland.” It got its name from the abundant amounts of white sand that have settled inside, giving it an amazing winter feel.

As much as we know about the sea, in the grand scheme of things we actually know very little about our underwater world. Case in point, the aptly named "Giant Cave" beneath Caye Caulker. An extremely technical dive, we're especially grateful to photographer Mark Long for capturing these remarkable images so that we can marvel at the spellbinding sight.

A deceptively easy way to die - Cave Diving

NSS/CDS safety video. Do not dive in caves without proper training.

There have been a few disturbing rumors and videos popping up of people diving without the proper training and equipment in the cave we call "winter wonderland" just off Caye Chapel. If you or someone you know have been thinking of diving in any cave or have dove in a cave without a cave certification and redundant systems, then I urge you to watch this video. Cave diving is an amazing sport, with breathtaking beauty and history, but just like flying a plane, doing it without the right training is not just suicidal, it's stupid. Being a Dive Master or instructor is not the sort of training you need to handle any bad situation in a cave. I need to share this with the Caye Caulker community.

A first take of some of the video footage we filmed with Wellun and Chip in Belize. Entry level old camera and not enough lights, but turned out pretty alright.
