Marco Gonzalez Summer Solstice Event Cancelled for 2017
We just can't fight Mother Nature. It got us this year," stated event organizer Jan Brown, Founder/Chairman of the Board for Marco Gonzalez Maya Site Ambergris Caye (MGMSAC), Ltd. "With one tropical depression over the area bringing in unfavorable conditions, and another on its' heels, I just can't have the event close enough to the Solstice date to make sense. Maybe we'll have a "summer festival" instead". MGMSAC had scheduled Maya Priest Martin Choc to return from San Marcos area in Toledo to again do the blessing followed by the Yo Creek Masewal Cultural Dance Group to perform the lovely Maya dances. Volunteers were lined up to serve food and beverages as well as provide tour services around the site. "If you went on a tour in the past, you were in for a treat this year to see how it is transformed in many areas due to 360 degree cleaning of many mounds. You can really see the formation of the houses now," says Ms. Brown. However, the current rain has wet the foliage so much that fires aren't possible to thwart off the mosquitoes, making the visit uncomfortable at this time.

ADVISORY NO. 4: BROAD AREA OF LOW PRESSURE OVER THE NORTHWEST CARIBBEAN
The low pressure system located near the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula and Belize continues to produce a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms. It is producing winds up to gale force strength several hundred miles to the east and northeast of the center which are not affecting the country. Although surface pressures are falling over the north western Caribbean Sea, the low still lacks a well-defined center of circulation. Regardless of development, heavy rains are expected to continue over portions of Central America, and Belize. If necessary an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft is scheduled to investigate the system today.

More Rain Expected As Tropical Disturbance Moves Away From Belize
Gradual development of this system is expected while it moves slowly north-north-westward across the Yucatan Peninsula, and then over the southern or central Gulf of Mexico today and tomorrow, where a tropical or subtropical cyclone is likely to form. This system is expected to bring moderate to heavy rainfall over the country with the heaviest rainfall likely over central, southern and some coastal areas. The concerns remain localized flooding of low-lying communities and flash floods near rivers and streams especially in the south.

BTIA'S POSITION PAPER: GLYPHOSATE AND ITS IMPACTS ON HUMANS AND THE ENVIRONMENT
The chemical compound Glyphosate (the key ingredient in Roundup) is the number one pesticide used to eradicate weeds in farms in Belize and worldwide. The World Health Organization's IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) classified glyphosate as a probable carcinogen in 2015. The Pesticide Action Network International (PAN) issued a comprehensive report in 2016 stating several long term and chronic effects on the environment, humans and animals worldwide due to the high usage of glyphosate. The alarming conclusions from international studies and reports about the effects and impacts of glyphosate have been taken into consideration by the Belize Tourism Industry Association (BTIA) as a national issue that needs to be given urgent attention.

A special thanks to Amb Carlos Quesnel and his family and staff for helping make this visit happen. Huge thanks to all visitors who braced the rain to join in on our celebrations. CROCS ROCK!

Hon. Castro's Sons Had Run-In With Cops, Accounts Differ
UDP Minister Edmond Castro constantly seems to be going from the frying pan to the fire. And after one week out of the headlines - he's back in the news tonight - but not for something he allegedly did, it's more like what his sons 23 year old Wasani, and 21 year old Jafari are accused of doing. Their troubles with the law started early on Friday morning at around 4:00 am - when a Belize City Southside police patrol said they were speeding on East Collet Canal in the Conch Shell Bay Area. The police came up on them - and PC Shelrick Caliz claimed they cursed him, warned him about who their father was, and eventually assaulted him. Caliz claimed the vehicle had no license. We have to say claimed because his own commanding officer is tonight saying that PC Caliz's report is not accurate.

Castro's Caught With Contraband
But to pick up the story from there, just 14 hours after that incident with the police in Belize City, they were caught by the Customs Department in Orange Walk with a truck full of contraband beer. Customs officers intercepted Wasani and Jafari Castro, along with Dedric Ramclam and Gian Espadas, on a BSI road transporting 89 cases Coronas, valued at an estimated $6200 dollars. And, they were in a whit swingle with no plates. The group was immediately taken into custody where they made an agreement with the officers to settle the matter out of court. Today we spoke to Comptroller of Customs, Colin Griffith, about the incident...

Teenaged Girl Murdered In Santa Familia
A couple was viciously attacked on Friday night in Santa Familia - the boyfriend, 22 year old Eliseo Bacab survived but his 16 year old girlfriend, Amy Guerra didn't. Bacab was stabbed several times in the neck while Guerra's throat was slashed. It's a disturbing case coming out of a quiet community like Santa Familia. Courtney Weatherburne has more details. Just to note, in the story it says the attack happened on Saturday night but that is not the case, it happened on Friday night and Guerra's body was found on Saturday at 2:00 in the afternoon. Here is that story.

Cops Charge Three For Murder
And police have already charged one of the 3 men with attempted murder. He is Steven Manzanero. The other 2 will be charged with murder. Here is what police had to say in this case. ASP Daniel Itche, San Ignacio Police: "The investigations revealed that he was along with a female, 16 years old, at the football field in Santa Familia Village sometime around after 10pm and whilst there 3 male persons approached them. One of the male persons attacked him, Eliseo, who inflicted stab wounds to his body. The female ran away going towards the riverside that is nearby behind the football field. She was followed and there she was attacked and her body was later retrieve from the river. Two large cut wounds was observed on the right side of her neck."

Elderly Man Dies As His Pickup Plunges Into Rio Hondo
Today there was a tragic accident in Santa Cruz Village - which is in the Orange Walk district. That's one of the hotspots for smuggling across the Rio Hondo River because it is right across from Botes in Mexico. This afternoon, 69 year old Froyland Peralta was by the riverside when it appears he put his Ford Ranger in the wrong gear, so instead of driving away from the river, he reversed into it. That's when his vehicle plunged into the river. Peralta drowned and his body was found in the pan of the pickup truck. His passenger who is hearing impaired managed to survive.

Man Found Dead On Roadside In Unitedville
A man was found dead early on Saturday morning in Unitedville Village, in the Cayo District. Police don't know what killed 52 year old Jorge Lemus - and will only say that it is classified as a body found. That's because he was found face down in a drain off the highway, with bruises observed on left eye and left side of face swollen. He could have been knocked down, beaten, or maybe just fell, so police are waiting on a post mortem. But, his family isn't - today his sister told me she believes he was robbed:... Voice of: Sister: "When they told us that he is dead, it was shocking, but he was working with my oldest brother. He was doing construction there and he had got paid the Friday night. So what we believe is that they wanted to rob him or they robbed him and that's what happen."

Customs And The Cops, "Making Nice"
In April we told you about the contraband cops who were caught on video trying to evade customs officers. The cops were attempting to smuggle a "bulto" of clothes past Customs, and tried to ditch the 40 pound bag on a sugar road. The video was initially kept private by Customs in an attempt to preserve its relationship with the Police, however it was soon leaked online and to the media. Since that incident, there have been reports that the relationship between Customs and Police have been deteriorating. When we spoke to Comptroller of Customs, Colin Griffith earlier today, he said that both agencies are still as close as ever...

When Will "Old Bridge" Between Belize and Mexico Re-Open?
Griffith also gave us an update on the situation at the Old Mexico-Belize Bridge between the Corozal Free Zone and Subtiniente Lopez. The former border crossing, which was frequently used by "fayuqueros", to smuggle goods from the free zone into Mexico was closed to vehicles in May. The fayuqueros responded to the closure, by blocking the Federal Mexican Highway to the Chactemal Bridge, the official border crossing. The protest was cleared up by the Mexican military in less than half an hour, and since May, there have been no reports of further revolt. Here what the Comptroller told us... Colin Griffith, Customs Comptroller: "On the Belize side of the bridge you would have checkpoints on certain days. This is also in collaboration with the Corozal Free Zone and we continue to monitor that area and we can say that the exportation of commercial shipment through the old bridge has ceased. They have now been directed to the new bridge that has been requested by our Mexican counterparts. But that exercise is ongoing."

Cocaine On a Cruise Ship?
The police have not released any official information, but 7News has learned that 3 employees of Norwegian Cruise Lines were charged with drug trafficking for allegedly being in possession of two kilos of cocaine on a cruise ship. Our information is that the 3 men are now arrested and charged, and they are at the Belize Central Prison. Reports are that the men, 2 nationals of St. Lucia and 1 from St. Vincent, arrived on last Tuesday, on an NCL ship which made a port of call at the Harvest Caye Island getaway. The men worked on the Ship. Reports say that the two kilos may have been picked up in Roatan. The men were arrested, and charged, and they were arraigned in Magistrate's Court. They are now at the Belize Central Prison.

A Murder In Santa Elena
And back out West, a man was shot and killed in Santa Elena - the second murder in the Cayo district. Police don't have a motive at this time but here is what they had to say on this murder case. ASP Daniel Itche, San Ignacio Police: "San Ignacio police visited the Novelos Convention Center compound in Santa Elena Town at the eastern end of the building the motionless body of a male person identified as Maynor Leonel Portillo, 20 years old Belizean laborer of Bradley's Bank area of Santa Elena Town was found in a sitting position leaning on the wall of the building with apparat gunshot wound to the head. The scene was processed and he was transported to the San Ignacio Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival."

Another Landmark Sign In City
If you've passed by Battlefield Park in Downtown Belize City, you may have noticed a strange new Belize sign that was recently put up in the Park's grounds. It's designed to be a tourist attraction like the ones at the Lighthouse area of Marine Parade, and the Buttonwood Bay community. Now, it's a small addition, and if you're wondering why the Belize City Council rolled out all the formalities, the mayor told us that all public-private sector partnerships need to be recognized. He explained why: Perrera told us that the sign is valued at a little over $5,000 dollars. It is already generating public interest from persons wanting to take selfies with the Supreme Court in the background.

Commercial Center Renovation Loan Finally Gets Green Light
The inauguration of the new sign gave us the opportunity to ask the Mayor about the stalled renovation of the Commercial Center in Downtown Belize City. That's the building that's been cleared out for months now so that it can be repaired as part of the Belize City House of Culture and Downtown Rejuvenation Project. It was approved back in 2014, and it was launched in 2015, but since then no real work has started on the Center, which in a severe state of disrepair. Time is running out, since the funding for the project expires in February of 2018. So, we asked the Mayor if he and his team have made any progress in getting the roadblocks out of the way so that the renovation can start.

Will The City Flood This Year?
So, while those construction works are coming, what about the City's infrastructure to mitigate flooding? Is it capable of withstanding any flooding that might come in this hurricane season? We already told you that this season is going to be very active, and as you saw in the weather report earlier, there is already a tropical storm forming out in the Caribbean. The mayor told us that although Belize City is always susceptible to flooding, the work that his team has done to alleviate the problems should allow for significant relief:

Can The Mayor Deliver Caribbean Shores In Municipal Election?
The mayor is hoping that those and all the works he and his council have put in will be enough to convince the Belize City resident to re-elect him. UDP insiders have told us that at the most- recent UDP council meeting, the Party leader, Prime Minister Dean Barrow, specifically asked Mayor Bradley if he is doing enough work in Caribbean Shores to bring out the vote for year's Municipal Elections. He is up for re-election, but he's also the UDP standard bearer in that constituency, which is being represented by PUP's Kareem Musa. Here's how he answered that one:

Mayor Calling Residents Who Don't Like Noise At BTL Park To Come Out
In the meantime, the Mayor is hoping that those Belize City residents who live around the BTL park will come out on Wednesday evening to a public meeting. The Council is trying to address the concerns of those citizens who complain that the BTL park is to noisy on most nights that they want peace and quiet. As viewers are aware, it's a popular venue for music and entertainment events, and it's also the location of the Pier 1 Bar, that opens for business during the weekend. Combine those with the other night-life spots the area, and the residents complain that they are harassed by the noise pollution.

The Importance of Fisherfolk
The fisheries industry is one of the country's most profitably and important money makers. Thousands of Belizeans make their living fishing, scaling, filleting and selling their catch. These fisherfolk must also work along with conservation groups to ensure that they are using sustainable fishing practices. Fisherfolk's Month is celebrated to as a way raise awareness for the work members of the fisheries industry do in conserving our natural resources. Today the Wildlife Conservation Society launched a photo exhibit to show off the unique relationship between fishers and the marine life that they make their living from. Here's what the WCS's Assistant Country Director had to say about the display...

Cops Clean Up Graffiti
Police Week officially launched yesterday, and today to show their love for their community, officers from Precinct 4 in Belize City participated in a clean up of one of King's Park's most used parks. For years, the Lopez Mateo's Park has been the victim of graffiti from members of surrounding gangs, so the cops spent the day scrapping off the some of the park's unwanted paint job. We spoke to Precinct 4's Deputy Commander, Assistant Superintendent Francisco Ack, about the clean up...

Police Week is Packed!
The clean-up is just a very small fraction of all the work the cops are doing countrywide for the observance of police week. The 7 days started with a mass yesterday and features all kinds of community initiatives and interaction. The police public relations officer told us more: We'll be following many of the police week activities.

Woman Dies In Fatal Motorbike Accident
And rounding out the police news tonight, there's one more traumatic death to report - and again it's in the Cayo District. It happened in Roaring Creek, where there was a fatal accident on the Valley of Peace road. 26 year old taco vendor Fabiola Vasquez was riding her motor bike alone when she lost control on loose gravel and flew off the bike. She was died on the spot.

Ich Bin Ein "Belizer"?
The BTB is reaching out to the western and central European market with the visit of five journalists from Germany. They arrived from a Central American tour on Sunday, 11th June and toured the country, making stops at the Warasa Garifuna Drum School in Punta Gorda, the Nim Li Punit archaeological site in Toledo, Placencia Village and Laughing Bird Caye among other destinations. After their "media jolly" in Belize, they are expected to go back to Germany and write articles about their experiences. According to the BTB, those media outlets have the potential to reach approximately 60 million viewers in Western and Central Europe. Europe is one of Belize's target markets - yet airlift continues to be an issue.

It may seem like excessive attention being lavished on a single bird, the Scarlet Macaw named Big Red, and much ado about nothing, but the concerns of this newspaper go much beyond this singular and now famous parrot. . The Forest Department, which has legal responsibility for the care and protection of wildlife in Belize, has gone on record to say that it has loaned the iconic bird to the tourist facility at Harvest Caye after receiving credible information that it was not safe to release this parrot back into the wild. Mr. Marcelo Windsor, the Forestry officer who made the decision to give the parrot a new home as an exhibition bird on Harvest Caye, says he was persuaded by reports from Dr. Isabel Paquet Durand, who had examined the bird and had determined that Big Red was not a suitable candidate for release back into the wild.

It's time for a bird bath!
With the rainy season upon us, some of us welcome a much needed shower! After months of hot, dusty weather, the long-awaited precipitation is celebrated by many. Not only are the plants rejoicing, but creatures who have been looking hard for fresh water the last few months are now quenching their thirst. Of course the birds are happy too, delighting in the opportunity for a proper 'bird bath' under the cool, refreshing rain. This pair of Mourning Doves have the right idea, making the most of this afternoon shower on Ambergris Caye.

Selfies Galore at the New Belize Sign in Belize City
How lucky were we to be in Belize City during the official ribbon cutting ceremony for the latest beautification project by the Belize City Council. We were killing time in the city as we planned our next road trip when we received our invitation. There was a NEW Belize sign unveiling. We just had to make an appearance. The new sign is located at Battlefield Park in the heart of downtown Belize City. We were eager to go take our selfies. This sign is different than the first two. Instead of large letters spelling out BELIZE, the new sign is in the form of a picture frame/post card that highlights the historical Belize Courthouse in the background. Tourists and locals are invited to walk up to the Belize Sign, sit or climb on it to take their perfectly framed pic. It's fun and a great addition to picturesque signs in the city. Our good friend Steven Perrera, who was responsible for the creation, installation and beautification of the fist two (now very famous) BELIZE signs was also responsible for this one as well.

Learning how to save lives in Belize
UK transport research organisation TRL is a delivery partner in the Belize Road Safety Project, which has been awarded a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award for its outstanding contribution to road safety. TRL's Darren Divall told Transport Network about the organisation's contribution to the project. Established by the Belize Government's Ministry of Finance and Economic Development in 2013, the Belize Road Safety Project sought to drive a reduction in injuries and fatalities from traffic collisions along a demonstration corridor between Belize City and Belmopan.

Belize Should Increase Consumption Taxes: IMF
Belize should increase the General Sales Tax rate to cut its deficit, the International Monetary Fund has said. The IMF said that the country should consider measures including broadening the base of the General Sales Tax (GST) and increasing its rate to the regional average of 15 percent, from 12.5 percent. It said that both steps could increase revenues by one percent of gross domestic product. Electronic tax filing and payment systems could also be enhanced, especially for GST and income tax, where less than 10 percent of registered taxpayers file or pay their taxes electronically, the IMF said. In his March budget speech, Dean Barrow, Belize's Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and Natural Resources, rejected the IMF's "publicly rehearsed" advice to raise general sales tax (GST), ditch zero-rated treatment for certain products, cancel exemptions, and increase personal and business income taxes as "regressive and punitive to both citizens and enterprise."

Simone Biles interrupts her vacation to make sure she can still do gymnastics
Simone Biles is currently taking a much deserved vacation with family and friends in Belize. From cliff jumping to wearing custom T-shirts to zip-lining in the jungle, the trip has clearly been action packed -- with time to relax at the beach as well. Despite all the fun, Biles took a moment on Monday to make sure she still could, you know, do gymnastics. Thankfully, she did a handstand -- by the pool -- and proved that she very much still could.

Our mosquito bites were infected with wriggling LARVAE: One couple's story of the nasty holiday souvenir no one wants
At first, Katie and Ian McCabe assumed the small itchy lumps that appeared on their skin while on holiday in Belize were ordinary insect bites. The couple had gone on a guided jungle walk and - despite using insect repellent and wearing long clothing - they'd unwittingly left a few patches of skin exposed. 'I got two mosquito bites on my scalp and Katie had one on the back of her neck,' recalls Ian, 57, a communications engineer. 'We just assumed they would go away.' However, the bites slowly grew. And when the couple returned home to Wilmington, Kent, two weeks later, the lumps had taken on another disturbing characteristic. 'I could feel something moving around inside,' says Katie, 55, who works with the families of children with autism. 'As if it was scratching away at the sides.' By now they had an inkling about what was going on. Before they left Belize last August, the pair had watched a documentary on their hotel TV about the human botfly - an insect whose larvae (or maggots) can live just under human skin.
