What are appropriate tips for hotel staff and tour guides? I'm guessing 15-20% for guides but not sure about the hotel staff.

Thanks in advance,

I so agree when possible on the tour amount!!! (LOL...) especially when you notice that some your guides are really hustling to keep some high-maintenance, typically non-tipping folks also on your boat down at a dull roar. (Wow, did we have a "party of six"--who were generally pretty funny if you didn't get too close--on a Shark Ray Alley trip that gave our SeaRious folks a run for their money. Hours of blood, sweat and tears...and not a penny in sight!)

The hotel question is a bit funkier, though. The handsome hubby left, I'm guessing, about $5 US a day for the maids everywhere we stayed 'cuz he questioned (and I guess you can't really be sure of anything) whether those nifty "service charges" were consistently passed on. (He had no reason to believe that they weren't, but he still had enough concern...)

i dunno...

When I stay at a place that is charging me a service premium on top of my rental rate, I don't leave a tip. I feel bad for the staff if they don't get it from management, but that's not my problem. What I do do, is take along some CD's and stuff like that there and when I'm particularly pleased with a person's service, I give them a gift.

A fish and a bird can fall in love, but where will they build their nest?
