Also with the most recent Open Your Eyes, and other specials The San Pedro Sun Shooting in San Pedro San Pedro Police has confirmed a shooting incident near a local resort on Seagrape Drive, just south of San Pedro Town. The incident reportedly transpired around 11PM, and lead to the death of a Hispanic male. Reports indicated that up to seven gun shots were fired. Police have since processed the scene and launched an investigation into the matter. The San Pedro Sun will have more on this developing story as investigations continue. Implementation of Digital Border Crossing Card The Department of Immigration implemented the use of the Digital Border Crossing Card on 1st July 2017 following months of consultation with and notification to the Corozal Free Zone (CFZ) Management, as well as the major established businesses in the Export Processing Zone (EPZ) area. In a meeting held with the CEO of the CFZ in January 2017, the use of the border crossing card was welcomed as a means to facilitate the movement of persons employed in and those visiting the Free Zone, as well as for Belizeans who wished to use the card to pass the Immigration Controlled point. In April of 2017, the major business establishments in the EPZ and CFZ were notified of the availability and use of the card and were provided with the necessary applications to supply their employees, enabling them to obtain the card before the implementation date. Belize Delegation Attends 38th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Wilfred Elrington attended the 38th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) held in St George's, Grenada on July 4th to 6th, 2017. CARICOM Heads of Government reiterated their support for the sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of Belize. They urged the development of a protocol for the Sarstoon and expressed hope that the referendum would be held as soon as possible to allow for the Guatemalan claim to be referred to the International Court of Justice. Ambergris Today Justice for Faye Peace Walk A Peace Walk/Demonstration was held this morning in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye in the wake of the murder of 13-year-old Faye Lin Cannon. Residents fed up with injustice and the lack of social services on the island are coming together to initiate change on the island for the protection of children and abused women and men. Faye's parents, David and Anke Doehm remain in San Pedro Police custody until Monday where they will be transported to Belize City prison until investigations conclude on the homicide case. No charges have been made against her adoptive parents yet. San Pedro shooting incident San Pedro Police are at the scene of what seems to be a shooting incident. One man lies in the middle of the street with no apparent signs of life. Reports are that people heard gunshots in the area just before the body was discovered. March for Faye Linn San Pedro residents came out to protest this morning in front of the San Pedro Roman Catholic for justice for Faye Linn. Faye was found dead in that family's condo on the island by her adoptive parents of the U.S.A. Both parents have been detained by San Pedro police for questioning until further notice.This is because an autopsy revealed that Faye had been physically and sexually abused. The American couple have been living on the island for about three years, with Faye and three other children- all of which were also adopted and female. Islanders are upset about the homicide that had happened to Faye Linn last week Monday Morning. Her parents said that she had woke up on Monday Morning to drink water and later that morning her parents found Faye Linn dead. Police say they responded to the scene of a shooting incident on Seagrapes Drive sometime around 11:15 p.m., where they saw the body of the man. It had gunshot wounds to the left cheek, top of the head, and abdomen. Police are looking for two persons of interest for questioning. Young woman dies in RTA A young woman is dead after the vehicle in which she travelled turned over on the Hummingbird highway Saturday night. Oscar Corado, 32, of Teakettle village, Cayo, told police he was driving his Ford Ranger pickup truck in the company of Damarias Ralac, 19, a domestic of Wagierale area, Dangriga, when as they reached between miles 22 and 23, he lost control of the vehicle and it flipped. Ralac suffered severe head and body injuries and died. Police have not yet levy any charges against Corado. Border management in Belize gets upgrade Border management services in Belize reached an important milestone this week, following the upgrade of the Personal Identification and Registration System (PIRS) and Migration Information and Data Analysis System (MIDAS) software. According to the United Nations Migration Agency (IOM), the upgrades to the PIRS/MIDAS will strengthen the capacity of the Immigration and Nationality Department to do "real-time" reporting, allowing for more effective management of the 1.5 million border transactions that Belize sees annually. MIDAS automatically checks all recorded entry and exit data in the border posts, and allows the collection of biometric data and more accurate capture of information. The new system has an enhanced connection to Interpol screening systems to identify persons of interest under various categories. Gateway Youth Centre needs help with summer camp The Gate Way youth centre has partnered with various government and non-government organizations and businesses to offer a summer camp to more than 300 youths from the Belize district, but the organization needs help with transportation. Youth Development Officer at the Gate Way Center, Adbul Nunez, told the Reporter newspaper that so far, the centre has raised a significant amount of money to carry out the programs, but it is now in need of bus transportation to and from the locations of the events. Summer Experience 2017 has the participation of the Belize Family Life Association (BFLA), the Conscious Youth Development Program (CYDP), the Feinstein Group of Companies, the Belize City Council, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at, the Belize Red Cross Society, the Ministry of Education, Creating Change through Sports initiative, and the Samuel Haynes Institute of Excellence. CARICOM, including Belize, establishes Caribbean Center for Renewable Energy Belize was one of ten Caribbean Community (CARICOM) nations that signed the legal agreement, officially establishing the Caribbean Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREEE). Belize joined Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Kitts & Nevis, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines and Suriname in signing the agreement, which operationalized the center and gives it full legal status. The countries signed the agreement at the Thirty-Eighth Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) on July 6, 2017 in Grenada. Breaking Belize News Five Caribbean nations sign arrest treaty The Caribbean Community is pushing towards increasing security within the region through a new treaty which establishes a system of extradition between CARICOM nations. Five countries, Grenada, Guyana, Dominica, St Kitts and Nevis, and St Lucia, led the way by being the first signatories to the Caribbean Arrest Treaty, at the 38 Meeting of the CARICOM Heads of Government, held in Grenada. Guatemalan man shot and killed; one injured in hijacking on Calla Creek Road, Cayo District According to reports, a man was travelling in his Hilux pick up truck this afternoon heading to Bullet Tree Village through the Calla Creek road in the Cayo District when he encountered several big stones blocking the road. The man exited his vehicle to remove the stones and that was when two armed men came out of the bushes and attacked him. Nearly 100 BDF uniforms found at house in OW Two men, a Mexican and an Orange Walk resident, are in police custody under investigation after a joint operation by Belize Defense Force (BDF) and police personnel led to the discovery of almost 100 BDF uniforms. The trove of uniforms and a few un-serviceable outboard engines, also from the BDF, were found at a home on Baeza Alley in Orange Walk yesterday. Police investigating murder of San Pedro man According to police reports, on Wednesday, July 5 about 9:00 am, San Pedro Police responded to a report at the Poly Clinic where they saw a male person lying motionless on a bed. Police investigation revealed that about 7:55 am, Plutarco Noralez, 56, a Belizean Laborer of a San Pedrito Area, San Pedro Town arrived at the Poly Clinic and told the Doctor that he was suffering from severe chest pain. International Sources Mexico: Underground chamber world's fourth largest Sixteen years ago a group of Belgian cave explorers discovered a large underground room at the bottom of 400-meter-deep Tlamanictli Cave in Puebla's Sierra Negra. The chamber measured 400 meters long and 240 wide, but the explorers had no way of accurately estimating the room's height, since they couldn't see the ceiling by the feeble light of their carbide lamps. They decided to name this vast hall La Mu�eca Fea, after a cabaret they had visited in Veracruz which, in turn, was named after a popular Mexican children's song (by Francisco Gabilondo Soler under the name Cri-Cri) which describes a doll "hidden away in a forgotten corner." The cavers' two-dimensional survey indicated that this vast underground hall deserved a high place on the list of the world's biggest cave rooms. In 2011, several British cavers decided it was high time to check the accuracy of that list using the latest technology, a Lidar or 3D laser scanner, which emits laser pulses and measures how long it takes for them to be reflected back. Lidars, first used in architecture, engineering and mining, are capable of producing highly accurate 3D images of an enclosed space. They finally decided that La Mu�eca in Puebla would be the 14th and final chamber they would visit. They were curious to accurately compare it to America's other huge underground rooms: the Belize Chamber in Belize's Actun Tun Kul Cave and Carlsbad Caverns' Big Room, which - before this expedition - was claimed to be "the largest single cave chamber by volume in North America."
