Wolfe's Woofer: Tracker
"What did you think of the Caracol ruins?" our tour guide, Andre, asked us.
"It was amazing!"
"Awesome!"
"Astonishing!"
The entire van load of twelve people had nothing but praise for the Mayan ruins at Caracol in western Belize. We had explored the ruins that morning. Now we were making the long trip back on the unpaved jungle road.
"Hey, look!" someone exclaimed, as a group of men carrying shotguns and rifles ran across the road in front of us.
"What was that all about?" I asked Andre.
Letter to the Editor: Innocence Lost
"What do you want to be when you grow up?" That is a question asked of millions of kids every day, and they usually give at least a dozen answers, some absolutely unachievable, but what do they know? They are innocent, beautiful, carefree children. Little Faye Lin Cannon as one of those children with dreams, of graduating, going to college, first love, and was she pretty enough, good enough, and smart enough. She never had the chance to find out. She was brutally abused, and raped, and murdered in the most horrific way. It has shocked the island and the country, as it well should. This little girl and her adopted sisters would have been better off in some orphanage in China, than to come to Paradise to be slaughtered the way she was.
Doctor Love: Sad Mother-To-Be and Gifted
Dear Doctor Love,
My husband and I tried for five years to have a baby and we were overjoyed when I finally became pregnant. From the beginning my husband began planning what his life would be like with a son. He talked about teaching our little boy to play football and soccer and how he was going to take him fishing and camping. Last week I had my twenty-week anomaly ultrasound and during the course of the test, it became apparent that we were not having a little boy at all, but a little girl. My husband is terribly disappointed. He is depressed, won't talk about the baby and even has called her my baby instead of ours. I am angry that he is being so selfish and is not able to focus on the fact that we are going to be blessed with a healthy child after trying for so long. How can I make him see that this baby is a gift, no matter the gender?

Salvadorans fleeing street gangs find safety in Belize village
Set up to shelter civil war refugees during the turbulent 1980s, the Valley of Peace is now welcoming Central Americans fleeing violent crime.
Juan Barrera* fled El Salvador alone when he was just 16. It was 1990 and, like thousands of others, the civil war forced him from his home. Juan bounced around Central America for years, scraping by until an uncle told him of a haven of peace just across the Guatemalan border in the small English-speaking country of Belize.
He found the village, scraped together enough money for a plot of land and began subsistence farming. Nearly 30 years later, he makes a comfortable living, growing cabbages, cucumbers, tomatoes and more to sell in the Belizean capital, Belmopan. One of his sons has gone to university and a daughter is on her way there.
Juan is one of hundreds of Central American refugees who found sanctuary in the aptly named Valley of Peace and he is hoping to pass the help and encouragement he found on to a new generation of refugees.
