Submarine network provider Huawei Marine Networks said it and Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) have completed their project to build an undersea cable system connecting Belize's mainland with its largest island, Ambergris Caye.

Huawei said the 23 km cable terminating at the town of San Pedro was delivered on time and on budget and will allow DTL to provide 100 Mbps broadband across the entire island beginning in August.

The project, announced in August 2016, is part of BTL's four-year, USD 100 million mobile and fixed broadband capital investment plan in partnership with Huawei.

Belize Telemedia Ltd. (BTL) and Huawei Marine announced the launch of BTL's new Strategic Evolution Underwater Link (SEUL).

The project will bring fiber-optic submarine cable connectivity to San Pedro in northern Belize, enabling super-fast broadband speeds to the island.

Rochus Schreiber, CEO of BTL said: "The SEUL project is an important element of BTL's transformative Network Evolution Plan, and its delivery permits world class high-speed network connection between Belize and the island of Ambergris Caye, which will significantly enhance the prospects for economic development on the Caye - and eventually throughout the country. This milestone would not have been possible without the incredible effort and dedication of both Huawei Marine's professional delivery team and BTL's Network Engineering Team."

This is formed as a part of BTL's previously announced $100 Million capital investment to modernize the country's mobile and landline infrastructure.

After completion, BTL will be able to offer its DigiNet Broadband product to the island of Ambergris Caye with broadband speeds of up to 100Mbps.

Schreiber met with Mayor of San Pedro Town, Daniel Guerrero to discuss DigiNet plan offers and the cooperation needed to carry out the works on infrastructure. Customers can expect fiber broadband as early as August 2017.

Zhang Hongxiang, project director for Huawei Marine, added: "In order to protect the environment, our delivery team chose to enclose the entire installation area with a turbidity silt curtain to reduce the impact on the environment. The effective delivery of the project, not only reflects our customer-centric focus but is also the embodiment of Huawei Marine's commitment to environmental and social responsibility."
