The victim has been identified as a Minelly Sanchez, and she suffered a broken leg and a bruised arm.

A collision involving a Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) vehicle and a motorcycle has left a young lady badly injured. The incident took place shortly after lunch on Monday, July 31st at an intersection on the islandís northern road. The victim has been identified as a Minelly Sanchez, and she suffered a broken leg and a bruised arm. She was transported to the Dr. Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Polyclinic II where she was stabilized, and later flown to Belize City for further medical treatment. The San Pedro Police Formation and the San Pedro Transport Department (SPTD) have since launched an investigation into the accident.

The investigation is young, and there is yet an official report, but the SPTD were still able to share a few details about the accident. Police told The Sun that Sanchez was on her way to work on her motorbike along the northern road. Upon arriving at an intersection, a white vehicle suddenly swerved onto the main road, giving Sanchez little room to avoid crashing with the vehicle. Her motorbike slammed into the front part of the white BTL truck, and the force threw her over to land hard on the pavement. As a result, she broke her right leg and severely bruised her right arm as well. Minutes later, a patrol transported her to the polyclinic.

I can attest to the fact that visibility looking south at this intersection is almost zero. I have many times been surprised by vehicles coming off the side road, trying to enter traffic on the main road. If a vehicle on the main road is speeding (which many many are) there is almost no chance of stopping in time to avoid a collision. Similarly, a vehicle abruptly coming out of the side road has a good chance of hitting somebody or being hit broadside by oncoming traffic.

I town I have observed a similar accident waiting to happen - the road across from MarAlliance that leads to Pedro's Inn is scary. If you are on that side road, trying to enter the main road your view to the north (immediate oncoming traffic) is almost zero due to signs.

Having the road north paved is a needed improvement. The downside is it leads to vehicles speeding. They need a serious crackdown on speeding. Not just on the road north, but all over the island. The way some people drive is very dangerous. With more and more traffic on the island, this needs to be addressed.

I have noticed that some places are now putting in the super large round mirrors at the entrance/exit.....We used these in California on our River Road homes.....It allows the people coming in and out of the property to see quite a distance down the road without having to pull into traffic. I saw a new one yesterday at Grand Colony....... Hopefully we'll see more.....
