Letter to the Editor: Land use oversight
Dear Editor,
I own land near the Hol Chan Resort, south of San Pedro. Recently, when I decided to build a home on one of my lots, I was required to submit the building plans to the appropriate SPTC department for approval. I was happy to comply as I understand how important land use oversight is to an island dependent on tourism, particularly eco-tourism.
Over the past week or so, another south island land owner has bull dozed acres of land, destroying considerable native vegetation (save for a few palm trees) and displacing a lot of wildlife. I just wondered if there was land use oversight provided here, as well? Is the land that is being bull dozed part of a development plan that has already been approved?
Wolfe's Woofer: Rough Night
"I'll have two egg tacos with bacon," I told the lady at my favorite local food stand.
I sat at the big picnic table and waited for Mario, my sometimes handyman, to arrive. When he finally came limping up, I barely recognized him.
"Mario! What happened to you?"
"I had a rough night, Mr. Dennis," he said, showing me one hand in a cast and three fingers of the other hand bound in bandages.
"What happened?"
Letter to the Editor: Destruction of the island
Dear Editor,
What in the hell is going on South of the island??? Every day there is new acreage RAZED and destroyed by some short sighted idiot. Each time that I go into town, the views sicken me.
I think there must be some oversight and control over actions that affect the lands and wildlife on Ambergris Caye. Please put a stop to the destruction of our beautiful island.
Doctor Love: Family First and No Selfies Please
Dear Doctor Love,
My three sisters and I are very close and we live within ten hours of each other so our families get together as often as we can. This lets our kids stay in touch with their cousins and us sisters and the brothers-in-laws have a chance to find out what is going on in each others families. My problem is with one sister's husband. Immediately after he eats, he asks for a place to have a nap and he will sleep for a couple of hours. He is in his thirties with no medical issues, so I wonder why he runs away leaving my sister alone with the rest of the couples. I think he is being rude. Should I talk to my sister?

Harvey could still threaten Belize
Weather forecasts indicate that the remnants of former Tropical Storm Harvey will continue to track west-northwestward through the Caribbean Sea and eventually into the Bay of Campeche where a regeneration of the system could occur this week.
Hostile winds above broke Harvey apart on Saturday, rendering it to a cluster of disorganized shower and thunderstorm activity south of Jamaica.
While a hurricane hunter aircraft has determined that the remnants of Harvey hadn't regenerated into a tropical depression or tropical storm because it lacked a well-defined center, Harvey is forecast to enter the western Caribbean on Monday, where it can reorganize as it moves west-northwestward.
Man shot by Customs officer dies
Dwane Almendarez, 30, a resident of Union Town, Orange Walk, who was shot by Customs Department personnel on Tuesday, has died.
Almendarez died early Saturday morning, after holding on for four days. A joint team of Belize Defense Force and Customs officers had searched a passenger bus on Tuesday and found Almendarez with contraband goods. Almendarez reportedly assaulted a customs officer when he tried to confiscate the goods, despite the BDF soldiers firing warning shots to deter the erupting altercation between authorities and the passengers.
Harvey dissipates; meteorologists still cautious
Tropical Storm Harvey has lost its strength and has been downgraded to a tropical wave; however, authorities are still monitoring its remains, as meteorologists suspect it can regain strength.
As of this morning, the remnants of Harvey was centered near 14.3N and 71.8W or about 135 miles north of the Northern tip of Guajira Peninsula Colombia and about 765 miles east of Cabo Gracias a Dios on the Nicaraguan/Honduran border.

11 Unique Trips To Take Before Your Child Turns 11
Cayo is 2nd on the list, of course, and it's all about culture and history. Cahal Pech is specifically mentioned.
"Get your kids hooked on history with a trip to San Ignacio, Belize-which is one of your easier international trips, as it's a relatively short flight from the United States and is an English-speaking country. If you go during the summertime, you'll likely find renowned archaeologist Jaime Awe and his team working on an excavation at Cahal Pech, an ancient Mayan ruin. You'll get the opportunity to witness them unearthing history, and the team will even field your questions. In addition to exploring the ruins, you can go cave tubing-which beats a lazy river any day."

Two tropical systems continue to threaten the Caribbean
An Air Force Reserve Unit Hurricane Hunter aircraft investigating the remnants of Tropical Storm Harvey on Sunday found that the system still lacks a well-defined centre of circulation, and so far there is no indication of winds to tropical storm force.
However, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami gradual development of this system is possible, and it could become a tropical cyclone once again as it moves west-northwestward across the northwestern Caribbean Sea, near the northern coast of Honduras, during the next day or two.
The system is expected to reach Belize or the Yucatan Peninsula on Tuesday. Interests in northern Nicaragua, Honduras, Belize, and the Yucatan Peninsula should monitor the progress of this system.
